Programs for parents & adults Two programs to be held in new Ag office, 103 E. Houston St., Jasper, TX Cottage Food Law itook effect Sept. 1, 2013. It was originally requested by home bakers so that they could legally sell bread, cookies and pies at county fairs and festivals. But the law includes much more than baked goods, has some specific label requirements, and still prohibits high risk foods from being sold from home kitchens. By January 2014 anyone operating under Cottage Food Law will also need a Food Handler s Card, a certificate good for two years. This class and test covers everything from hand-washing to storing foods at proper temperature. For parents who have pastures: Multi-County HAY Clinic Fire Hall in Jasper, Oct. 15, 6 to 9 pm 1 CEU in IPM for private applicators Do you know what to look for in quality hay? Do you know why (or if?) you need to supplement the hay you feed your cattle? Compare hay and forage samples. Cost of program is $15 & includes a meal. Click on events at jasper.agrilife.org RSVP required! 409-384-3721 Many people don t realize that if they are preparing food for the public, they or someone in the kitchen supervising them must have a food handler s card. If they are serving food -even as a volunteer they should have the card. Vendors who sell fresh produce at market food that is taken home and washed or prepared by the customer do not have to have a the card. Unless.if they slice a piece and offer free samples here, have a taste of this melon then they are food handlers & should have a card. Cottage Food Law Monday, Oct. 21, 6 to 7 pm FCS agent Cindy VanDevender will speak to Jasper County Farmers Market members and guests, an informal introduction to the new law, what is included, what is not allowed, and new label requirements. The program is free, since Farmers Market is hosting it, but feel free to invite any guests who would like to learn more, regardless of whether they are market vendors. Food Handler s Card Saturday, Nov. 16, 9 am to noon We will bring in an instructor to teach the Food Handler s course. The class and 2-year license (assuming you pass the test) will cost $20. Class will be held in the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office at 103 East Houston St. Jasper, TX 75951. Class will be open to the public. The class is also offered in English, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese at https://extensiononline.tamu.edu/courses/food_safety.php Pay at the door but please RSVP at 409-384-3721 HOLIDAY MARKET will be Nov. 9 and feature a bake-off & scarecrow contest. Jasper County Farmers Market is open now through Nov. 9, 2013 Saturday mornings, 8 to 11 a.m. at Hwy 190 & 96 in the Tractor Supply parking lot. The market is run by Jasper Master Gardeners and it s only $5 a spot ($10 for Holiday Market). Open to local growers, craftspeople with hand-made items, or to local non-profits for fundraisers. For questions, call 409-384-3721 or go online to jasper.agrlife.org.
