We S e r v e The Sandwich Lions Tale June 2017 Visit Our Web Site at: http://snd-lions.weebly.com For those of you who have been counting, this will be my final message as president of the Sandwich Lions. To all of you, I express the simplest yet probably the most inadequate of words, THANK YOU. We have had a very productive year because of the entire team membership working together. A couple of new projects were started. We were part of the YMCA Trunk or Treat afternoon, and our Lions parade wagon was a big hit. We also initiated children's vision screenings this year. The school staff has invited us back for pre-school screening as we approach the new school year Lion First Vice President Tom Martin has put together a fun installation night June 14 at Freedom Hall in Sandwich. He will be planning the new year. If you have some ideas for him, and would be willing to help, give him a call. Trust me, any president truly appreciates volunteers. I had the honor of presenting three Lou Brady Memorial Scholarships from the Sandwich Lions at the annual awards night. This is possible because of the great support from the club and the community at the annual draw down raffle. A very hard-working committee made this happen. Again, the team came through. The metal recycling team has consistently been busy, and that has served the community, improved the environment, and helped the financial picture. All the above, along with our standard projects like the steer raffle at the Sandwich Fair have reminded people in the Sandwich community that we are in business. Yes, we have a great team with the Sandwich Lions. 47 years ago, I wrapped up the Presidency of the Hinckley Lions Club. We were a group of young people in a Charter club and an active team serving the community. I have had the opportunity to serve with a veteran second team as a president. Thank you all so much. Yea team. Sandwich Lions Club Dinner Meeting Minutes 5/10/2017 The meeting was called to order by president PDG Lion Ed Carter at 6:30PM at FVOAS. The Pledge was led by Lion John Haloran, the song by Lion Ron Wigton and the prayer was given by PDG Lion Ed Carter. Guests were introduced as follows Kenny VanBeregan, prospective member, Rick Johnson, Michael Amir, and Tamara Amir who will be inducted into the club tonight. Lion Amy Serby s husband Sean and her sons were here to present the program. Dinner by Upper Crust Caterers was enjoyed by all. New members Rick Johnson, Michael Amir and Tamara Amir were inducted by PDG Lion Nancy Rex and PDG Lion Ed Carter. Michael and Tamara were sponsored by Lion Nancy Rex and Rick Johnson was sponsored by Lion Bob Jones. A Summary of the minutes of the April Dinner Meeting and the April Board meeting were given by recording secretary, Lion Sharon Adkins. Treasurer Lion Rita Ferguson gave current fund balances. President PDG Lion Ed encouraged all members to read Lion information sent by e-mail. Reports: Sight and Sound Sweepstakes booklets/$ are due by May 17. There are a few more booklets available. Children s Vision Screenings- Two were done last month, one at the Park District egg hunt and one at Haskins school. Both were well received. Scrap Metal- 18 Lions helped on April 29. There were about 30 drop-offs and many pick-ups. Lion Bob repeated a request for more help with this project. Tootsie Pop Days- Lion Sharon reported that 16 Lion worked a total of 63 ¾ hours. They collected about $1437.98 on the street. So far, we have $175.00 in underwriting for an unofficial total of $1612.98. Draw Down- Lion Leo reported that dinner will be served between 7:15 and 7:30 on May 12. We will set up at 1:00 on that day. It looks like we have plenty of silent auction and raffle items, including and Anthony Rizzo autographed baseball. LIF Vision and Hearing screening buses will be at FVOAS on May 22 between 9:00AM and 1:00PM. We could use a few Lions to help. Installation Dinner- President Elect Lion Tom Martin reminded members of the installation dinner June 14 at Sandwich Freedom Hall. A sign-up sheet was sent around. Fishing Derby- This will be held on July 20 at Shabbona State Park. Our club is responsible for the fishing pier. Old Business: Ballots with dues change choices were handed out. When counted it was reported that the dues will be raised $5.00 per quarter for the 2017-2018 year and raised again by $5.00 for the 2018-2019 year. New Business: In order to waive the license for the steer raffle at the fair, a vote was needed by the membership to do so. Lion Jack Thompson moved to waive the license, second Lion Joe Muhr. Motion was approved unanimously. A program on Bee Keeping was presented by Sean Serby and family and enjoyed by all. The 50/50 was held and the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Lion Sharon Adkins, recording secretary Secretary s Notes: The Fishing Derby for People with Disabilities Derby - will be on Thursday, July 20th. Mark your calendars. If your schedule allows you to participate, start time is approximately 9 am and wrap up is normally between 2:30 and 3 pm. Any and all help is appreciated and your assistance helps to provide a good time for those individuals attending the Derby. That evening the Waterman Lions holds a pork chop dinner at 6 pm to wrap up Derby events. You can attend either the Derby and/or the pork chop dinner. Reports indicate the meal is very good and also the raffle that is conducted helps raise funds for the Fishing Derby. Currently we do not have a price for the meal.

The Sandwich Freedom Days parade - will be on Saturday, July 1 st with line-up at the Sandwich Fair grounds. If there by 9 am, should be plenty of time. We usually have a good showing at the parade, you can either walk or there is room for 4 or 5 on the float. Weather permitting, someone can wear the Sandwich Lions suit. If you need a new Scrip list, - let me know. I can create a new listing with no problems and e-mail to you. If Trustee Nancy does not have the gift card you want / need, let me know and I can order it. Our 1st cruise night of the year will be Friday, June 16 th. Normal start time is 5 pm, but if you get there a little late; help is always needed. Remaining 2017 Lion Cruise nights in Sandwich are: Fridays: July 21 st, and August 18 th ; the final Cruise night will be Wednesday, September 27 th. Mark your calendars with these dates. The 2017 Lou Brady Scholarship winners - were Emily Mendoza, Sarah Dennis, and Jarrod Scents. Lion Ed presented four Scholarships at senor awards night on Monday, May 17th. Money earned from our annual Drawdown raffle, silent auction, and individual raffles the night of the drawdown are used to fund this project. The scholarship winners are determined through their academic performance and activities participation during four years at Sandwich High School. Sandwich High School maintains these records and provides the information to us prior to the presentation of the awards. Lions of Illinois Foundation golf - is scheduled for Saturday, August 5 th at Senica s Oak Ridge Golf Course in LaSalle, IL. Money raised from this outing is designated to support our LIF s Low Vision Screening program. CURRENTLY, our LIF s web site is under reconstruction they are hoping that it will be back up and running by the 1 st of July. See the LIF Golf attachment at the back of the Lions Tail.
