COACH S CORNER Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke: The team s response in training to the Penn FC loss Very well, the day after is always a difficult day to come in and train on the regen day but it s also important that you come in and you absorb video and absorb some of the lessons that you took from the game. You have to make sure that those things are corrected and that you double down on the things you did well. We talked about the movement for some of the players was excellent, to get into good pockets and do damage and then it becomes execution. All in all, we are in a great place and control our own destiny for the most part and it s going to be on us to take as many points as we can on the road and we have to win our two home games. If controlling your own destiny is a benefit or added pressure It s a good thing. We are a very young team, one of the youngest in the league by design and this is a good experience. It s difficult experience at times, like this weekend we should have put that game away by halftime but we didn t and that s a hard lesson for the whole group. It s an important lesson in their overall development. We went through moments like that with guys like Cory [Burke] a couple years ago and you look at them now and that helps you maintain your focus on the big prize which is getting guys into [Talen Energy] Stadium. On lessons learned from the previous contest against Pittsburgh They are fantastic defensively and they press. They are good on the ball, much better than they get credit for. Last time we broke down their second goal, I think I called it head tennis at the time but competing. They are very good at winning first and second balls consistently; they are big and athletic and are very experienced. They are exactly the type of team you want your young guys to learn and grow against and we will see if we ve learned and grown at all. We will try to approach the game the way we play, try and play through the lines but there isn t much space between the lines against these guys and they are playing on a hard surface. It s going to be a big challenge to get anything out of this game but we know that and have to accept that challenge. They have conceded three goals at home all season so it s an uphill battle but you have to swing away. Nashville had only conceded three at home and we scored twice and took an important result. That will be my mentality and I think the boys are the same way.

Playing the third match in eight days, Steel FC was unable to find its scoring form from its previous two contests against the United Soccer League s top defense in 2018. After halftime adjustments, Steel FC battled back with a second-half goal from Chris Nanco but Riverhounds forward Neco Brett bagged a brace to send the visitors home with three points. Pittsburgh s stringent defense was on full display in the opening half, holding Steel FC s high-scoring offense without a single shot in the opening 45 minutes. Steel FC fell behind in the 35th minute as Kenardo Forbes collected a clearance and flung a pass out wide to Brett. Brett cut to his left and fired a left-footed show inside the near corner for his 12th goal of the season. Steel FC needed just seven minutes in the second half to respond as the second-year duo of Santi Moar and Nanco found the back of the net. Starting on a goal kick from Jake McGuire, Matt Real flicked a header on the restart to spring Moar on the left flank. The crafty Spaniard softly flicked a pass behind the Riverhounds defense that Nanco chased down before cutting to his right. With the defense swarming, the 23-year-old fired a right-footed shot into the left corner for his third goal of the year. Steel FC nearly grabbed the lead in the 71st minute as substitute Michee Ngalina sprung 17-year-old Brenden Aaronson in on goal. After a quick touch, Aaronson was denied a chance on goal by the keeper. Pittsburgh responded eight minutes later with the winning goal as Christiano Francois and Brett teamed up for a 2v1 counter that ended with Brett s second goal and the match winner.

2018 BETHELEHEM STEEL FC TECHNICAL STAFF Head coach Brendan Burke Burke is in his third season as head coach of Bethlehem Steel FC, coaching the squad to an 30-37-24 regular season record during the club s first two seasons in the modern era. He was formally introduced as the club s first head coach on Oct. 29, 2015 and recently signed an extension to remain with Steel FC for the foreseeable future. During his three seasons with Bethlehem Steel FC, he has navigated 89 different starting XI combinations in 91 career matches while guiding four players to first team contracts with Derrick Jones in 2016, the duo of Cory Burke and Matt Real after the 2017 season and Olivier Mbaizo earlier this year. Overall, Burke had coached 74 players including 29 players with ties to the first team and 17 from the Philadelphia Union Academy the past three seasons. Prior to joining Steel FC, Burke served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Union from 2011 through 2014. He was heavily involved in all levels of the U.S. Soccer pyramid, including serving as head coach of the Union s PDL affiliate Reading United from 2008-13 where he had a record of 71-18-19. During his time with Reading, Burke coached 49 players that signed professional contracts including Ray Gaddis, C.J. Sapong, John McCarthy and Matt Hedges. Burke served as associate head coach at Northeastern University in 2015. Assistant coach Stephen Hogan Hogan, who formerly served as the head coach of the Philadelphia Union s PDL affiliate, Reading United, is in his third season with Steel FC. Hogan guided the PDL squad to a 22-5-1 record in his two seasons with Reading United. The club went 10-3-1 and won the Mid-Atlantic Division title along with an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals. Hogan followed up with an even stronger 12-2-0 record in 2017, tying for the most wins in the 72-team league. During the season that saw the club reach the postseason for the ninth time in 10 seasons, Hogan s squad conceded an Eastern Conference-low 10 goals. As a Reading player under Brendan Burke, he made 52 appearances, second most in club history, while playing from 2007-10. He helped lead the team to the 2009 PDL Regular Season Title and the PDL National Semifinals in 2008 and 2010. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Hogan spent two seasons as head coach at the College of Saint Rose s men s soccer program.
