SERIES RECORDS Georgia State and VCU meet for the 23rd time on Monday night, with the Rams holding an 184 lead, including a 120 mark since the Panthers joined the CAA. The two schools were formerly conference brethren when Georgia State was in the Sun Belt Conference from 197677 through 197980. The Panthers posted a 25 record against VCU in that era, and the schools met again in 198081 and then in 199798 and 199899 before Georgia State s entrance into the CAA in 200506. Georgia State head coach Rod Barnes has a 47 record against VCU. Barnes Ole Miss squads defeated the Rams in 199900 (7562, home), 200001 (8884, OT, away), 200203 (8268, home) and 200405 (6362, away). Before coming to Georgia State, Barnes spent the 200607 season as an assistant coach at Oklahoma on the staff of Jeff Capel, who was the VCU head coach from 200206 before taking over the Sooners. Curry followed an 18point effort in the tournament opener against Texas A&MCorpus Christi to claim Most Valuable Player honors. His 21 points tonight equaled his career best, set in his first game in a GSU uniform against Georgia Tech, and his seven treys are the most by a Panther since Thomas Terrell also nailed seven against Florida Atlantic in 200102. Georgia State improved to 65 and have won four of their last six, while Chattanooga, which had won 13 of 20 Dr. Pepper Classics, fell to 77 on the season. Curry made his first start of the season, filling in for Jihad Ali. The senior finished the game 7of13 from the field and 7of12 from threepoint range. Buckner, who was also named to the alltournament team, finished 10of11 from the field and 3of4 from the free throw line, including a pair of key ones with just over two minutes remaining in the game. The junior pulled down eight rebounds and added two blocks. The Panthers finished the tournament trailing for only 12 seconds of action in earning the two wins.

HEAD COACH ROD BARNES Rod Barnes, former Naismith National Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season as the Georgia State University head coach In his first three years in Atlanta, Barnes brought renewed energy and interest to the Georgia State program while laying the groundwork for future success with recruiting and an emphasis on work ethic and fundamentals. The Panthers have performed extremely well in the classroom since Barnes arrival, as all ten seniors who have completed their eligibility have graduated, while an 11th, Marques Johnson, has already graduated entering his senior year. Barnes, who spent eight years as the head coach at Mississippi, is an 18year veteran of college coaching and was an assistant coach in 200607 at Oklahoma. He was honored as the Naismith Coach of the Year as well as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in 200001, when he led Ole Miss to its most successful season ever. His squad set a schoolrecord for wins with a 278 record, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the only time in school history and achieved a final national ranking of No. 9. A former AllSoutheastern Conference player at Ole Miss, Barnes is the only person to earn AllSEC honors as a player and then be named SEC Coach of the Year. Barnes compiled a 141109 record in eight seasons at Ole Miss (199806), guiding the Rebels to four postseason bids, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Barnes first Ole Miss squad recorded the first NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 1999 firstround victory over Villanova. Two years later, the Rebels picked up NCAA Tournament victories over Iona and Notre Dame to reach the Sweet 16. He also spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Rob Evans before being elevated to head coach on April 9, 1998. In addition to coaching the only three NCAA Tournament victories in school history, Barnes was part of five of the six NCAA appearances in Ole Miss annals as head or assistant coach. A native of Satartia, Miss., and 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes, 44, began his career as an assistant coach at Livingston for three years before returning to his alma mater in 1993. State knocked down three straight threepointers with just under ten minutes remaining in the half to start to pull away. Following a dunk by Buckner, Curry and freshman Devonta White hit backtoback threepointers to give State a 2815 lead with 8:30 remaining in the half. With just over four minutes remaining, Buckner threw down his second dunk and was followed by a Josh Micheaux steal and layup to extend the Panthers lead to 3724 with three minutes remaining in the half. A pair of free throws by junior Brandon McGee gave the Panthers a 3924 lead, their biggest of the game, before Chattanooga rallied before the half, cutting the deficit to just eight at 3931 as the horn sounded. Junior James Fields added five points, seven rebounds and five assists, while junior Josh Micheaux came off the bench to play 25 minutes and score eight points, while dishing out a teamhigh seven assists. The Panthers shot a season high 54.5 percent from the field, knocking down 10of24 from behind the arc. State held the hosts to just 23.5 percent from threepoint range. 2020 VISION Senior Dante Curry and junior Eric Buckner became the first Panthers under head coach Rod Barnes to each score 20 points in the same game. The duo led the Panthers to the championship of the Dr Pepper Classic, as Buckner scored 23 points on 10of11 shooting and Curry knocked down seven threepointers to tie a careerhigh with 21 points. His seven threepointers were the most since Thomas Terrell knocked down the same against FAU during the 200102 season. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE Juniortransfer Brandon McGee recorded doubledoubles in backtoback games entering last week s Dr. Pepper Classic. He scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Panthers win over Florida A&M, before scoring a careerhigh 23 points and pulling down 10 boards in the Panthers loss to Georgia Southern. He just missed a doubledouble in State s win over Western Michigan, scoring 16 points and pulling down eight rebounds. McGee scored a rare 2020 game on the Panthers trip to the Bahamas, scoring 21 points and grabbing 20 rebounds in State s final exhibition game in August. WHITE GETS THE NOD Freshman Devonta White made his first collegiate start against Florida A&M and led the Panthers to victory. The Alpharetta native score 13 points, just one shy of a careerhigh, pulling down five rebounds and dishing out three assists in 31 minutes of action. He has now started two straight games at point guard. The Panthers are 31 since White took over the starting spot at point guard. DOBY S DEBUT Freshman Harold Doby made quite an impression in his first game with the Panthers. The Augusta native came off the bench to score 19 points and pull down five rebounds in 30 minutes of action against McNeese State. The 19 points were the most for a GSU freshman in their debut in the last 20 years. He finished the game shooting 7of10 from the floor and 5of7 from the free throw line.

With the score tied 62all, James Madison s Devon Moore went to the free throw line with 3.5 seconds left. He made the first to put the Dukes ahead, but missed the second, and Brandon McGee rebounded for State. After a timeout, the Panthers Harold Doby inbounded the ball from in front of the JMU bench with 2.7 seconds on the clock. Doby found Marques Johnson, who got a good look from the wing, but the JMU s Andrey Semenov managed to deflect the shot. Ali grabbed the rebound under the basket and laid it in just ahead of the horn. DANTE S INFERNO Making his season debut, senior Dante Curry came off the bench to score 15 points on 5of8 from threepoint range, to help lead the Panthers to an 8070 win over former conference rival Troy. More impressive was the fact that he played just 13 minutes, but sparked the Panthers to their top offensive output of the early season. In his first ever game with the Panthers, Curry scored 21 points against Georgia Tech in Dec. of 2008. BAHAMAS TRIP Georgia State s 201011 season got off to an early start as the Panthers took an offseason international trip for the first time in school history. GSU travelled to the Bahamas from Aug. 1217 and played three games against local teams in Nassau, winning all three contests. Jihad Ali scored in double figures in each contest, averaging 13 points. Harold Doby averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game, while Josh Micheaux averaged four steals. Brandon McGee had a rare 2020 game with 22 points and 21 rebounds in the finale.

The 610 forward has already collected 24 blocks this season, an average of 2.1 per game, which ranks second in the CAA and 33rd in the NCAA as of Dec. 20. He set a career high with five blocks in the Panthers win over Florida A&M on Dec. 18. In the CAA opener against James Madison on Dec. 4, Buckner finished with four blocks. He has already had a pair of three block games this season, the first coming in the season opener at McNeese State. SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE Jervon Pressley, a highlytouted power forward from Charlotte, N.C., signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Georgia State during the early signing period. Pressley is a 68 power forward from E.E. Waddell High School, where he played for Jermaine Walker. He is the first player to sign with the Panthers this season. Pressley, known for having great energy and a strong build, is a super interior defender. ESPN.com listed Pressley with excellent size, big hands and strong legs. He goes for the boards out of his area and is a fine outlet passer. Because of his wing span, he plays much bigger than his 68 height. He is very active running the floor and is an excellent offensive rebounder in transition. The site has him listed as No. 42 at his position in the country. MAKING THE GRADE The Georgia State basketball team has excelled in the classroom under head coach Rod Barnes. In Barnes first three seasons, all 10 seniors have graduated, and one of this year s seniors, Marques Johnson, has already earned his degree. Barnes program achieved a recordsetting performance last spring, earning its highest ever semester grade point average at 2.96, which raised the team s cumulative GPA to 2.76, also an alltime high under Barnes. The Panthers have posted a GPA of 2.75 or better for four straight semesters. Last season, Jihad Ali became the first Panther to earn a selection to the Colonial Athletic Association AllAcademic team. Ali (2008 & 2010), Ousman Krubally (2009), Kevin Lott (2009 & 2010), Trae Goldson (2010), James Fields (2010) and Daniel Brown (2010) have each earned the CAA Commissioner s Academic Award under Barnes. 461 AND COUNTING Georgia State has made at least one threepoint field goal in 461 straight regular season games, dating back to the 199495 season. The last team to hold the Panthers without a trey was Stetson on Feb. 18, 1995. ON THE DEFENSIVE In each of Rod Barnes first three seasons at the helm, Georgia State has played strong defense, allowing its opponents an average of 64.5 points per game entering the 201011 season. This season, the Panthers are holding opponents to 64.3 points per game, entering Monday night s contest. After Barnes first Panther team in 200708 allowed 66.2 points per game, GSU improved to 63.6 ppg allowed in 200809 an an almost identical 63.7 ppg last season. The previous Georgia State record for fewest points allowed was 68.4 in 199900. In fact, before Barnes arrived, the only others seasons in which GSU allowed fewer than 70 points per game came in a threeyear stretch from 199899 (69.6) through 200001 (68.7). HOME SWEET HOME The Panthers will play two of their next three games at home, beginning with Monday s contest with VCU. Following a road trip to UNC Wilmington, the Panthers will return home to face Towson on Saturday. After opening the season on the road, the Panthers played three straight home games, going 21 over that stretch. With the win over Florida A&M, the Panthers finished a

second threegame homestand with a 21 mark and are currently 42 in the friendly confines of the GSU Sports Arena this year. State finished 95 at home during the 200910 season. The win over Troy marked the third straight season the Panthers have won their home opener and are 31 in home openers under Barnes. Last year, the Panthers won their first five home games of the year and finished the season winning four of their final six. Dating back to last year, State has won eight of its last 12 at home. ROAD TRIP The Panthers just concluded a threegame road trip, going 21 and taking the title of the Dr Pepper Classic. Those three games were the start of a stretch of seven of nine games on the road. State will travel to Wilmington, N.C. on Wednesday and conclude the road trip with three straight games in Virginia beginning Jan. 12 in Harrisonburg, Va. LET THE CELEBRATION BEGIN Georgia State will celebrate a pair of impressive milestones in the history of the men s basketball program during the 201011 season. This season marks the 10year and 20year anniversary of the two squads that qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Each team, along with all of the men s basketball alums will be honored during the Feb. 12 game against Northeastern which will tipoff at noon on CSS. The 199091 Panthers became the first Georgia State men s basketball team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. After winning the conference championship tournament, the Panthers only had to go a few blocks north to the old Omni to face Arkansas in the first round of play. Ten years later, the 200001 team put together the most impressive season in Panther history, finishing the year 295. After rolling through the conference tournament, the Panthers entered the NCAA Tournament as an 11seed. Rallying from 16 points down, the Panthers defeated the sixthseeded Wisconsin Badgers, 5049. State advanced to the second round and led Maryland 4342 in the middle of the second half, before falling to the Terrapins, who eventually reached the Final Four. SERIES RESULTS VS.
