INSTRUCTION MANUAL S315.100 SIMON AIRWAY TRAINER Gaumard Scientific Company, Inc. 14700 SW 136 Street Miami, FL 33196-5691 email: sima@gaumard.com 2005 Gaumard Scientific All Rights Reserved Revised: August 2000, November 2001, December 2005

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO COMMENCING TRAINING EXERCISES ON YOUR NEW MANIKIN. HANDLE YOUR SIMULATOR IN THE SAME MANNER AS YOU WOULD HANDLE YOUR PATIENT WITH CARE. SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AFTER READING THIS INSTRUCTION MANUAL, PLEASE CONTACT GAUMARD SCIENTIFIC AT: 800-882-6655 USA 305-971-3790 Worldwide 305-667-6085 Fax e-mail: sima@gaumard.com Internet catalog: www.gaumard.com

INTRODUCTION The S315.100 Simon Airway Trainer is an effective tool in the instruction of airway management and is designed for use in an approved program only. It features an adult upper torso without arms and an anatomically accurate intubatable airway. This multipurpose adult airway management trainer is designed to present the same challenges experienced by paramedics and physicians in the real world. Use of this simulator will enable students to obtain the confidence and skills required in a real life situation. FEATURES Surgical Placement of Tracheostomy Tube Emergency Needle Cricothyrotomy Stick Bilateral Tension Pneumothorax Decompression Drainage Six Neck Collars, Three Cricocartilages, Membrane Tape Oral, Nasal, Digital Intubation BVM and Suctioning Trach Opening for Tube Placement and Suction Retrograde Intubation Trans-Tracheal Ventilation Fiber Optic and Light Wand Intubation Auscultation of Lungs/Stomach CPR using BVM and Closed Chest Compression Manual Carotid Pulse Wired for CPR Monitoring and Recording Custom Carrying Bag Instruction Manual

S315.100 shown with the trachea collar, a second set of ribs containing the access points at the 2 nd and 5 th intercostal spaces for relieving tension pneumothorax and conducting chest drainage. The squeeze bulb provides manually activated carotid pulses. The tubes with red and blue markers may be used for measuring the effectiveness of airway ventilation and chest compressions using an optional CPR monitor. Accessories include spare trach collars, lubricant, spare cricoids, tape to seal the opening in the trachea, ribs used for chest pneumothorax and chest drainage, and squeeze bulbs used to pressurize the space between the ribs and lungs.

Proper BVM technique will produce a noticeable chest rise. Always use a mask with a thick seal to minimize leakage between the mask and face. Oral, nasal or digital intubation can be practiced. Here the provider uses a MAC 3.5 laryngoscope and a 7.0 endotrachial tube. Remember to always lubricant the distal end of the ETT. Failure to lubricate will damage the simulator.

The neck collar is removed showing the cricoid prominence and location for ventilation by needle insertion. Also shown is the tape covering the tracheal opening used for the placement of a trach tube. The skin covering the upper torso is raised showing the standard ribs used for CPR exercises. The ribs used for decompression and drainage are at the right.

The obverse side of the special rib cage showing how one or both squeeze bulbs are connected to interpose a positive pressure between the ribs and lungs. The ribs are installed and the squeeze bulb(s) can be used to inflate one or both sides of the simulator.

The 2 nd intercostal space is located and a needle inserted at the mid-clavicular line. Essentially, the provider is piercing the bilateral seals shown in the pictures above. An audible hiss is heard. The 5 th intercostal space is located and drainage practiced.

GENERAL NOTES LUBRICATION The Simon Airway Trainer is designed to simulate the sensitivity of the human airway. Therefore, ALWAYS use a lubricant when attempting to intubate this simulator, such as a silicone spray designed for simulator use, a non-aerosol cooking spray, or soap and water. This will help to simulate the natural fluids within the human airway. NEVER attempt to introduce an ET tube, NG tube, OP tube, or other invasive device without the use of a lubricant. BOTH the device and the simulator airway must be lubricated. Failure to use a proper lubricant may result in damage to the simulator. CARE AND CLEANING The skin of the manikin may be cleaned with mild detergent, or soap and water. Indelible marks made with ballpoint pens, ink or magic markers will remain. Do not wrap this simulator in newsprint. Do not use providone-iodine on the simulator. Improper storage may damage the manikin keep the manikin stored in the box provided. Do not stack or keep heavy materials on top of the box. Keep the manikin in a cool area.
