Junior guard Landon Goesling became the first player since 2015 to earn Heartland Conference Player of the Week honors when he picked up the award Monday after leading SEU to a 2-0 start with 51 points combined in wins over Colorado Mesa and Colorado Christian (25.5 ppg). SEU s 108-56 win over Southwestern at home Nov. 14 was the largest margin of victory in 59 years, 11 months and nine days; SEU beat St. Thomas by 55 points (73-18) Nov. 23, 1957. SEU s 4-0 start is the 13th time in school history the team has won its first four games and the fifth time under nith-year head coach Andre Cook. St. Edward s University is a member of the Heartland Conference through the 2018-19 season but will merge with the Lone Star Conference in the Fall of 2019 creating the largest NCAA Division II conference at 19 institutions. SEU lost three seniors from the 2016-17 that accounted for more than half of the scoring production. The Hilltoppers went 17-15 overall and placed sixth in the Heartland Conference with a 9-9 record. The youthful Hilltoppers have just 82 combined career starts (Watkins, 34; Cory McKendree, 22; James Taylor, 13; Goesling, 4; Sean Phillips 4; Dorian Lopez 4 The Hilltoppers lone senior is Sean Watkins, a four-year letterman from Frisco, Texas. Watkins ranked 22nd in the nation last season and first in the Heartland Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.74) and also led the Heartland Conference in steals (56). SEU is coached by Andre Cook, beginning his ninth season at the helm, who has the third-most head-coaching wins in school history (121). Cook, a 13-year head-coaching veteran in the college ranks, has compiled a 236-152 overall record, with a 117-112 record as head coach of St. Edward s. After spending three years building the program at SEU, Cook has collected winning seasons in four of the last five. Since that span began in 2012-13, the Hilltoppers have compiled an 85-65 record with Cook s best year in 2014-15 where SEU posted a 22-8 record and tied for third in the Heartland Conference while earning the program s first national ranking since 2008. During his tenure, Cook has coached nine players to 13 all-conference selections, and he guided two players to all-region honors. Cook came to St. Edward s from Hudson Valley Community College, where he compiled an overall record of 119-40 (.748) in five seasons. In each of his last two seasons, his Vikings combined for a 62-5 overall record and 32-0 mark in conference play. Cook was named Region III Coach of the Year and BCANY Junior College Coach of the Year in 2007-08. In 2008 2009, the Vikings advanced to the NJCAA Division III national tournament, winning their way to the semifinals. Cook, the Watervliet, N.Y. native, received his bachelor s degree in American Studies from Skidmore College in 1994, and he completed a master s degree in teaching social studies from Union College in 1996. While at Union, he served as an assistant men s basketball coach from 1994 to 1996. Cook coached basketball at Hudson Falls High School from 1996-04 where he also taught and served as assistant principal. As a high school player, Cook played four years of varsity basketball at Watervliet High School for New York State and Hudson Valley Hall of Fame coach George Mardigan. Cook was inducted into the Watervliet Hall of Fame in 2009. Cook played four years at Skidmore College and is in the top 10 in scoring at Watervliet and Skidmore, amassing over 1,000 points at both places. In 2012, Cook was inducted into the Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame in Albany, New York. Cook resides in Austin, with his wife, Stacey, and children, Emily and Colin.
