WHYALLA SWIMMING CLUB Whyalla Swimmers unite in their home territory held on Saturday 14 th March at the Whyalla Leisure Centre, as one at the last Swimming Carnival for the 2008/2009 season. Juniors and seniors combine and support each other seeing swimmers excelling. Whyalla Swimmers gather a grand total of 26 Gold Medals, 17 Silver Medals, and 14 Bronze Medals. 45 PB s (Personal Bests). PB s where flying high with many of our juniors getting PB s for their swims. Sarah Stirling made a massive PB for the day with 10sec along with high PB s being made by Luke Marinkovich, Taylah Stirling and Simon Geldenhuys. Other juniors excelling making PB s for the day where Jaykn Turpin-Burns, Dewald Geldenhuys, Jaimie Matsen, Rachael Williams, Rebecca Bubicich, Hayley Grinter, Madeline Edwards, Amy and James Leevers and Lucas Hoffman. Squad swimmer Jasmine Bridgeman gave regular carnival attendees a run for their money making PB s and medalling in most races. Whyalla swimmers had a great time at the Handicap relay races with all teams bettering their times. There were so many improvements with the junior swimmers it was a very difficult job for Team Manager Sheryl Simpson when she formed the teams. Good try Sheryl. Whyalla had the opportunity to be the 1 st carnival outside the Aquatic Centre to have an Electronic Score Board. This is a first for any Open Carnival in the history of competition. Much thanks must go to Martelco Hire for the use of this. Other sponsors for the event to be thanked are: Up-To-Date Consultancy, Ms H Wilkinson, Thomson & Waddingham, Peter Callis First National, Commonwealth Bank, Whyalla Funeral Services, Whyalla Hose and Fitting Services, Rosbeth House, Target Whyalla, Pro Co Stage and Sound, Trophy Shop, Electrical Discounters and Eyre Peninsula Trophy Services and Major sponsor Santos. Clubs who participated in the event where Booleroo Centre, Quorn, SPG Sharks (Salisbury), Crystal Brooke, Mountain Pool (Mount Barker), Leigh Creek, Port Augusta, Roxby Downs, Starplex, Port Pirie, West Coast, South Coast. The carnival started 1pm and was completed by 7.30pm followed by a tea at the Whyalla Bowling Club. Much thanks goes to the Bowling club for staying late and supplying teas. The Whyalla Open Water Swim was swum on the Sunday 15 th at 9am with 33 swimmers setting off for the 1700m swim (twice around the Marina). 10 Whyalla Swimmers set off with handicaps ranging from zero to 10 minutes. Swimmers swam very well with Lauren Mathews coming in as the fastest female swimmer for the event. It was great to see new club member Paul Leevers swimming the event for the first time. Well done Paul great to see you. Much thanks goes to the Whyalla Surf Lifesaving Club for supplying life support vessels for the event and the Whyalla Yacht Club for supplying the Buoys for the event and the location for presentations and breakfast. Thanks to you all. The season will come to an end with a presentation day announced shortly. Thanks also go to all the Whyalla people that assisted in the running of the carnival without Volunteers like you all events like this could not happen.
