Dear Shihan, Sensei, Sempai, I would like to invite you and your dojo to the 2010 ATSUSHIA CANADIAN CHAPIONSHIPS, the 9 th edition of our annual tournament, which will be held on the 29 th of ay. Once again, last year's tournament was a tremendous success with a high level of competition between various Kyokushin and other types of schools from Eastern Canada, the United States, Aruba(!) and all over Quebec, including dojos from the World Kanreikai organization. The tournament is open to any school regardless of affiliation or style and follows standard Kyokushin tournament rules. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their skills in a competitive environment, and fosters camaraderie and friendships not only between competitors, but also between different Sensei, dojos and organizations. During the day, we will feature the juniors (under 18) in Kata and Semi-Contact competition. This will be followed by a ull Contact Knockdown competition for adults in the evening. There will be five tatamis and the registration will be automated to increase efficiency and reduce waiting time. Divisions deemed to be excessively large will be split up to offer better opportunities for competitors. Our guest of honour this year will be the North American Chairman and Canadian Branch Chief of I.K.O. atsushima, Shihan Roman Szyrajew (7 th Dan). Last year's tournament demonstrated exceptional spirit and cooperation amongst the schools, making the event memorable for all participants. I look forward to seeing you and your dojo at the 2010 atsushima Canadian Championships. Osu, John Kalaidopoulos Director, atsushima Canadian Championships Tournament West Island Kyokushin Karate Page 1

Adult ull Contact Rules (Evening) Standard Kyokushin Knockdown rules apply. The rules will be explained prior to the commencement of the knockdown competition. A match is won when one competitor either scores a full point (IPPON) or is given a decision by the Sushin (head referee/judge) based on a majority decision of 3 or more judges including the Sushin. Two WAZA-ARI (half points) constitute an IPPON. A win is also awarded if an opponent is disqualified or withdraws from the match. An ippon is awarded if the will of the opponent is stopped for more than 3 seconds. A waza-ari is awarded when an opponent is stopped for less than 3 seconds. When no definite ippon or waza-ari has been scored, the judges may award a win by decision on the basis of superior techniques, skill and fighting spirit. In the event that the ukushin give a competitor 2 flags at decision time, the Sushin may award the fight to that competitor or call a draw. If a competitor receives only 1 flag, he/she cannot win. If a competitor cannot continue because of an injury or unintentional illegal technique by the opponent, the fight is awarded to the uninjured competitor. If the injury is caused by a voluntary illegal technique, the competitor at fault may be given a chui, genten or shikkaku, depending on the severity. If the injured competitor cannot continue that fight, he/she wins and the other loses the match by shikkaku. The injured competitor then goes on to the next round, but UST bow out and the fight is awarded to the other person. This is to avoid faking or miraculous recoveries. Duration of Bouts: Initial regulation round: 3 minutes irst extension (if necessary): 2 minutes Second extension (if necessary): 1 minute If the match is still ruled a draw after the 2 nd extension, the competitors will be weighed. The lighter competitor will win if he/she weighs 10 or more pounds less than his/her opponent. If there is less than a 10 pound difference in weight, the competitors will fight a third extension of 1 minute, after which each judge must render a decision (they cannot call a draw). Legal (Allowed) Techniques: Jodan (Head level) All kicks to the head including knees Chudan (Body level) All punches to the front or sides of the torso All kicks to the front or sides of the torso Gedan (Lower level - specifically the legs) Any mawashi geri (round kicks) below the hips either inside or outside of the legs Page 11

ADULT ULL CONTACT RULES (CONTINUED) Illegal (Disallowed) Techniques: Any attack to the opponent s head, face and neck with the open hand, fist or any part of the arm. Except in exceptional circumstances, this will normally merit an automatic disqualification. Kicks to the groin Head thrust or butts Kicks to any part of the knee Grabbing or holding an opponent or his/her dogi Elbow strikes to any part of the opponent s back Striking or kicking an opponent who has been downed, unless the attack immediately follows the sweep or downing technique, in which case contact is not allowed. aking an attack from the floor after having been downed by the opponent. (This should not be confused with an opponent defending himself whilst on the floor). ailing to obey the referee's instructions during the bout Any other techniques or practice that the referee of the contest shall decide is improper or unfair, including any disrespectful or improper behaviour by coaches or Senseis. Official Warning: The Sushin may give unofficial warnings to the competitors during the progress of the match. The Sushin may give an official warning (chui) with or without a majority decision from all referees (ukushin). 2 official warnings constitute a major warning (genten) at which point the competitor will not be able to receive a winning decision. A waza-ari wipes out a genten and gives a slight advantage to the competitor. If a decision is rendered, this competitor cannot lose. It is either a tie (extension) or a win, unless the other competitor has a waza-ari, in which case the match can be a tie or awarded to either. 2 genten in a round constitute an immediate disqualification (shikkaku). A genten or chui is erased if there is an extension round. The Sushin may immediately give a chui or disqualify a competitor if it is felt that there is a clear violation. A competitor may be disqualified immediately if it is felt that he/she or the Sensei/coach shows a lack of sportsmanship or disrespect to the opponent or officials. Decisions made by the Sushin or the supreme judge, as designated by the tournament director, are final. Page 12
