Interest in Cycling. Interest in Cycling. Segmentation of Cycling. Group Barriers To Cycling/Concerns* Existing/Regular Cyclists (10%) Lack of cycle lanes/ traffic free routes (46%) Lack of secure parking at the places I go to (33%) Road safety fears (25%) Occasional Cyclists (15%) Lack of cycle lanes/ traffic free routes (68%) Road safety fears (45%) Making journeys in the dark in winter (32%) Potential Cyclists (25%) Road safety fears (70%) Making journeys in the dark in winter (59%) Lack of cycle lanes/ traffic free routes (52%) Non-Cyclists (50%) *Peckham Low Carbon Zone: Transport Survey

Developing A Strategy Target Groups. Developing A Strategy Target Groups. Key Issues How To Address Them Existing/Regular Cyclists (10%) Used to cycling fear levels lower. Use main roads. Make main roads safe. Cyclesuperhighways. 20mph. LIP funded schemes. Occasional/ Potential (40%) Fear of traffic. Lack of safe routes. A safe/traffic-free/ low traffic infrastructure.

Developing A Strategy The Big Question. Developing A Strategy The Big Question. How do we get occasional and potential cyclists onto the road and d make cycling accessible to all? Need infrastructure won t t use main roads. Many major cities are now using protected cycle lanes Copenhagen, Melbourne, Sydney, Amsterdam, New York only way for cyclists to feel and be safe. Cable St CS2 Amsterdam

Developing A Strategy The Big Question. Developing A Strategy The Big Question. BUT Protected cycle lanes routes in London look impossible owing to car-centric TfL policies (TLRN & SRN) unwilling to reduce road capacity. Create a low cost network that also combines with existing regeneration planning to provide safe and attractive low traffic infrastructure for all cyclists. Major benefits too for those on foot and local residents.

Developing A Strategy Low Cost Infrastructure. Developing A Strategy Low Cost Infrastructure. Low Cost Filtered Permeability. Make Use Of Routes Through Parks. Hackney Did It With Low Budgets Popular Routes Through Burgess Park

Developing A Strategy Low Cost Infrastructure. Developing A Strategy Low Cost Infrastructure. Traffic-free/low free/low traffic routes already work in Southwark. Green routes very heavily used Greendale/Surrey Canal Path. Surrey Canal Path - Peckham Greendale-South Camberwell HomeZones eg Sutherland Square & around Salisbury Row Park Both heavily used by cyclists all through the day and evening.

Developing A Strategy Where To Focus Efforts. Developing A Strategy Where To Focus Efforts. Recent work by TfL (Dec 2010) has mapped all the potential for cycling c across London.

Developing A Strategy Where To Focus Efforts. Developing A Strategy Where To Focus Efforts. Looking at Southwark Highest Potential For Cycling Journeys Camberwell Peckham E&C/Walworth Borough & Bankside Good fit Regeneration/high investment areas. High levels of needs health/deprivation.

The Purpose of the Routes The Purpose of the Routes Green, quiet routes that link town centres, open spaces and parks, schools and areas of employment.

The Possible Routes 1. Camberwell. 4 3 2 1 http://www.openstreetmap.org/ 1. Denmark Hill Stn to Peckham Rye Stn. 2. Sceaux Gds/ Camberwell College of Arts/Lucas Gardens to Burgess Park. 3. Camberwell Green to Burgess Park. 4. Myatts Fields to Burgess Park.

The Possible Routes 4. Borough & Bankside. 1. Southwark Tube to Bermondsey St. 1 2. E&C to the river. 2 3. E&C to Bermondsey St. 3 http://www.openstreetmap.org/

What Is Needed? What Is Needed? Agreement that cycling needs its own plan and infrastructure. Integration of cycle routes into regeneration planning and projects. Co-ordination by Southwark steering committee of members, officers (planning policy, transport planning and highways) and the local community. Agreement of core routes overall/in each area. This can happen Broadly this approach is being hard-wired into E&C/Heygate regeneration but will need more support to work across Southwark.

Additional Elements. Additional Elements. As well as an infrastructure a number of other elements are needed ed to deliver high levels of cycling. Infrastructure Support High volumes of secure on-street cycle parking at destinations eg town centres/workplaces. Secure cycle parking on estates. Improving permeability/wayfinding through estates. Designing out conflicts between cyclists & pedestrians in parks. Behavioural Measures Promoting cycle training. Encouraging cycling to work working with the 200 Club/ cycle training for employees. Encouraging cycling to school eg via Bikeability scheme (SC Transport plan shows 3% cycle to school 18% would like to!). Signage of routes. Promotional activity around newly created routes/networks (e.g. distributing maps to local households).
