Day 1: Tuesday 20th March, 2018 King Island - Currie All aboard for our King Island Adventure! With pickup from home we transfer to Tullamarine Airport to board our Rex flight to King Island. On arrival at Currie Airport, we will be welcomed and escorted to our coach. We travel to the main town of Currie to explore and enjoy a lunch break. This afternoon our touring includes discovering the Island s history at the Currie Museum, housed in the old lighthouse keeper s residence. We also view the nearby steel structured Currie Lighthouse which was prefabricated in England and sent to King Island in 312 pieces to be assembled. We then travel to our accommodation at Boomerang by the Sea where we will stay for the next 3 nights and enjoy the sunset across the water during dinner. OVERNIGHT: The Boomerang by the Sea, CURRIE
Day 2: Wednesday 21st March, 2018 Calcified Forest - Grassy - Naracoopa - Penguins Today we visit Seal Rocks State Reserve at the southern tip of the island, home to the Calcified Forest, we follow the walking track to the viewing platform overlooking the 7,000 year old remains of an ancient forest revealed when the lime laden sand which had covered and preserved its stumps, trunks and branches was blown away. Next stop is Grassy which boomed with the scheelite mine from 1970 until it closed in 1990. Grassy is also a popular deep water fishing harbour and home to King Island Kelp Craft, where they have perfected a method of drying and manipulating the kelp so that the finished product gives the effect of fashioned leather or ceramics. Their creations are truly unique and the detail and workmanship makes you marvel at the fact that each piece was once little more than a lump of wet seaweed! We continue to the east coast past City of Melbourne Bay to Naracoopa and admire the white sandy beaches of Sea Elephant Bay. This evening we venture out to view the fairy penguins as they parade to their nests and watch out for more wildlife, including mutton birds, possums and wallabies during our return to Currie. Remember to take a warm jacket as the night air can become quite cool. OVERNIGHT: The Boomerang by the Sea, CURRIE
Day 3: Thursday 22nd March, 2018 Penny s Lagoon - Cape Wickham - King Island Cheese During our travel north today, watch out for wild turkeys crossing the road and peacocks, geese and ringneck pheasants feeding in roadside paddocks. We view the Yellow Rock River and its wild life as well as panoramas of Christmas and New Year Islands from Yellow Rock Beach. We visit Penny s Lagoon, a suspended lake (one of only three in the world) and where, weather permitting you may swim in the fresh waters. We continue to beautiful Martha Lavinia Beach where the miles of pale sand are a drawcard for surfers, fishermen and shell collectors. Standing proudly
at the northern most tip of the Island is Cape Wickham Lighthouse, built in 1861 using local granite, it is the tallest lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere. In the shadow of the lighthouse, lies one of the world s top-ranking golf courses. We reflect on the heartbreak of shipwrecks as we view the grave stones of the crews of the Neva and Loch Leven and gaze out across Bass Strait at the distant wreck sites. On our way back to Currie we visit the famous King Island Dairy for an opportunity to taste and purchase from the range of delicious prize winning dairy products. OVERNIGHT: The Boomerang by the Sea, CURRIE Day 4: Friday 23rd March, 2018 Currie Harbour - Cultural Centre - Home After a leisurely breakfast and check-out, touring on our last day includes a visit to the island s Cultural Centre. Then we have time to stop at Currie Harbour, where we can admire the fishing boats. We follow the Kelp Road to view the Kelp Industries on the way to the airport for our afternoon flight back to Melbourne, to complete our King Island Adventure. As always, our chauffeurs will be there to greet us at Tullamarine Airport and return us safely home with memories of a fascinating and rewarding tour of King Island. We thank you for travelling with O Shannessy s Tours and look forward to your patronage again in the future!
