Hello to our Retrieving enthusiasts PRESIDENT S PAGE I am looking forward to my first year as President of the Club and am keen to work with all committee members to provide a top trialling season for 2016. I am pleased that we also have assistance from supporters who are not on committee: such as Margaret Bourn and Jean Bird who are helping with the Newsletter. And more volunteers will be needed for our fundraising venture. On Sunday 15 th May we will be holding a Sausage Sizzle at Bunning s in Prospect. So if you can help, please put this date in your diary and let us know of your availability by ringing either myself or our Secretary Sue Neldner. All judges contracts are in and copies of schedules can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. We are kicking off 2016 with a full weekend on training on April 23 rd and 24 th April at Kuitpo. The venue for the May Retrieving Trial will be at Masons property Masondrina on Poltalloch Road, Ashville this is about 25km from Tailem Bend on the Princess highway; 20km from Meningie. Maps and details following. At Tim and Suzie Whittington s property at Kuitpo we plan for the Saturday to be mainly training exercises with perhaps a mock trial or a display in the afternoon (when everybody has had enough of training!) Depending on numbers of course. On Sunday we will have more training opportunities in the morning followed by RATG Novice and Open after Lunch. Monday 25 th. is a public holiday so attendees may have the opportunity to recuperate. I am hoping to be able to organise some pre-season training for newcomers during daylight-saving at centrally located grounds possibly during the month of March. It would include Basic Training that would be suitable for RATG and Novice levels. You will be notified via a special email as soon as details have been arranged. As the weather starts to cool you will no doubt be looking to crank up training your dog. A number of club members have been getting together helping one another, so organising a type of Buddy System with other retrieving people may be a way for you to brush up your skills. We are working on updating/replacing the RAFTCOSA web site; the old one was good but new technology available will allow us to store more information, especially records from previous years, and also be more user friendly making input simpler. Expectation is that the new site will be up and running by the end of the month with all information currently on the old site transferred across. 2016 schedules will be posted here as well as results and any other newsworthy items. On behalf of the committee, I take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best for the retrieving season ahead; may all of your dogs perform the best they are able to, to please you and make both of you happy, if they perform well enough to also please the judges that is a bonus! Best regards, Tor. PS: Keep abreast of the national retrieving scene by visiting www.retrievingaustralia.com Page 3

Jean Bird interviews Jessie Hughes. At what age did you get your first dog, what was its breed and name? I ve been with dogs all of my life, my parents had Aussie Terriers and Silkys as pets; they had dogs when I was born. My own first dog was a stray Cocker Spaniel, Snoopy; she used to go everywhere with me when I had my horses - sitting in the car whilst I was eventing or show jumping. I started out in the dog world with her by taking her to obedience classes and life just went from there. She gained a CD title as did the Great Dane, Cleopatra, that I trained and trialled for my vet; both pre Weimaraners. When did you start breeding and were they with Weimaraners? I started my love affair with Weimaraners when I was vet nursing in 1974 and began showing one for a friend shortly after. I got my first one in 1977, Jadas Lovely Lucinda, she went on to become a Show Champion and gained her Utility Dog title in obedience as well as an ET title. My first litter was from Cinda in 1979 and I have only bred Weis. How did you get your prefix name? I have 2 prefixes, both were with different friends in the beginning but they are now solely in my name. POSHVWEI I threw a few letters together, stands for Pet Obedience Show Hunting Versatile WEImaraners. My friend chose GRAEVELVET as they are gray and look like velvet. Tell me about your training accomplishments. Life is about training, dogs never stop learning, nor do owners. I have trained and trialled all of my dogs over the years and as well as being show dogs they also had to have a bash at what they were bred for. I have multiple best of breed Adelaide and Melbourne Royal and specialty show winners who also have obedience and tracking titles and have tried their hand (paw) at retrieving. My current dogs are: Dual Ch (T) Trilby Fitz The Bill ET CD PT RAE (Briard) and Weimaraners, Dual Ch (T) PoshvweiInya Dreams ET CDX RAE), Grand Ch Ghostwind Master Piece ET CD TD NRA QND RAE), Aust Ch WaldwiezeGraevelvetAtPoshvwei (Imp NZ) ET RE CD ) compete in RATG, Aust Ch Waldwieze Game Keepa At Poshvwei (Imp NZ) ET CD RE). The most number of dogs owned by you at one time. 6, the number I turned up at my country posting at Nuriootpa with much to my boss horror (I could control my lot [back then!] my boss couldn t control his 1 Labrador! Currently I have 5; 2 of which came to visit and never left. Your contribution to the retrieving world. With a lot of help from Lynne Webster, and advice from Margaret Hall, I convened the 2008 and 2014 National Retrieving Trials in SA. Prior to that I had convened Retrieving Trials for the Gundog and Weimaraner Club. Currently active in Showing (can t run any more but have handlers!), obedience, RATG, Retrieving, Rally, Tracking. Has your full time working life been with the South Australian Police? I joined SAPOL as an adult recruit, but I had other jobs prior to that. I completed 38 years service in SAPOL and have been retired for 3 years. Am I right in thinking you wanted to be in the mounted contingent and ended up on a camel and bravely did quite a long distance ride with the force? I originally joined SAPOL to ride horses, and although I passed the course I did at the mounted cadre, I decided that the chauvinistic boss and I wouldn t get on, so chose a career in traffic instead and was lucky enough to travel throughout South Australia, getting paid to see the country side. In the bi centennial year I joined a contingent of SA and NT Police officers for a re-enactment during which I rode camels from Darwin to Alice Springs. Page 12
