Statistics: Available at collegehockeystats.net. Twitter: Follow Irish hockey on Twitter at @NDHockey. IRISH HOSTING SECOND SEASON: Notre Dame is playing host to the first round of the Hockey East playoffs, opening what head coach Jeff Jackson calls the second season for the second time in as many seasons on its home ice at the Compton Family Ice Arena. Notre Dame finished fifth in Hockey East and welcomes No. 12-seed Massachusetts for a best-of-three series Friday, Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday nights. If Notre Dame wins the series, it advances to face No. 4-seed UMass Lowell, March 13-15, in a quarterfinal best-of-three set. Should the Minutemen advance, they would travel to top-seeded Boston University for their quarterfinal series as the league reseeds following the first weekend of play. IRISH VS. MINUTEMEN: Notre Dame leads the all-time series against Massachusetts 5-4-0, and is 3-1-0 against UMass in the Hockey East era. The series is even at 2-2-0 at Notre Dame. The teams first met in late December, 1994, in Amherst, Massachusetts, with the Irish taking a Dec. 30 game, 6-3, before losing, 4-3 in overtime, on New Year s Eve. The sides also split a pair of games at the Joyce Center during the 1999-2000 season with UMass claiming a 2007 game played in Tampa. The Minutemen made their Compton Family Ice Arena debut Dec. 6-7, 2013, with Notre Dame claiming the first game, 5-3, and UMass winning the second, 3-2. The Irish sweep in Amherst this year was the first non-split in series history. This is the first postseason meeting between UMass and Notre Dame. PLAYOFF HISTORY: The Irish are 39-50-3 (.440) in its postseason history. Last year, its first in Hockey East, Notre Dame went 3-2 and accomplished a rare Bostonian double, beating Boston University in a singe first round game at Notre Dame and then also eliminating topseeded Boston College, claiming a best-of-three series in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. UMass Lowell beat Notre Dame, 4-0, in the semifinals at TD Garden. The Irish were 33-35 in 22 seasons as members of the CCHA, including a 19-8 mark at home. Under Jeff Jackson, the Irish are 21-14 in conference tournament play, including CCHA titles in 2007, 2008 and 2013. Notre Dame was 5-13-3 in the WCHA from 1971-81, an era of aggregate score series which allowed for ties. During February he was also named the league s Defensive Player of the Week twice (Feb. 9 and Feb. 16) and the league s overall Player of the Week once (Feb. 23). Petersen led the nation with a.962 save percentage during the month of February, stopping 279 of the 290 shots thrown his way. He also posted a 1.48 goals against average in February, fourth nationally and tops in Hockey East. Petersen made at least 32 saves in each of his seven starts while also stopping all 10 shots he faced in his one relief appearance, Feb. 6 at Maine. He helped the Irish to a 4-2-2 month that included wins over each of Hockey East s top three teams; a 2-0 shutout of No. 10 Providence College (Feb. 13), a 3-2 win at No. 2 Boston University (Feb. 21) that temporarily kept the Terriers from clinching the league title, and a 3-1 win over No. 9 Boston College (Feb. 28). The coda to Petersen s remarkable February was a 55-save performance on Feb. 28 in a 3-1 win over No. 9 Boston College at the Compton Family Ice Arena on Senior Night. It marked the most saves by a Notre Dame goalie since Nov. 12, 1988 when Lance Madson made 57 saves in a 6-3 loss to Air Force. It also marked the most saves in a Hockey East regular season game since at least 2005. Petersen held the Eagles to just a single goal in a game, their lowest offensive output since Jan. 9. Petersen made 44 saves in the team s 3-2 win over No. 2 Boston University on Feb. 21 at the Terriers Agganis Arena, including 18 in the third period as the Terriers furiously tried to secure the Hockey East championship with at least a tie against the Irish that never came. Petersen stopped all 38 shots he faced in a 2-0 shutout of Providence on Feb. 13, his third shutout of the year. The three shutouts are the most by a Notre Dame freshman since David Brown also had a trio in 2003-04. For the season, Petersen ranks fourth nationally, and first in Hockey East, among freshmen with his.923 save percentage. He stands sixth nationally, and first in Hockey East, among freshmen with his 2.39 goals against average this season. Petersen is the first person to win the Hockey East player, rookie and defensive player of the week accolades during the regular season since Dan Sullivan of Maine claimed all three during the 2010-11 season. STRONG STARTS: Cal Petersen has made a habit of starting strong during his current run of great goaltending. Petersen has posted a shutout in six of his seven opening stanzas, including a 22-save effort against No. 9 Boston College on Feb. 28. Petersen carried a 106:08 shutout streak in the first period between Feb. 7 and Feb. 27. This has helped Notre Dame outscore its opponents 34-23 in the first 20 minutes of games this year, by far its largest margin of any period. IRISH SCORE 100 GOALS: Vince Hinostroza s third period game-winning goal on Feb. 21 at No. 2/3 Boston University was Notre Dame s 100th goal of the season. The Irish became the 11th team nationally to have scored 100 goals on the 2014-15 season and the third in Hockey East at that time, joining Boston University and UMass Lowell. BU-TIFUL WEEKEND: The Irish enjoyed one of their better performances of the season Feb. 20-21, taking three out of four points on the road at No. 2/3 Boston University s Agganis Arena. The Irish became the first team this year to take points from the Terriers twice, tying BU, 2-2, on Friday night before posting a 3-2 victory on Saturday. BU lead Hockey East, and ranked second nationally, averaging 3.75 goals per game entering last weekend but tallied just four times, its lowest mark all season for a weekend set against the same opponent. Notre Dame s weekend in Boston continued a torrid streak against the Terriers as the Irish are now undefeated at 5-0-2 in their last seven matchups with Boston University. RUSSO RUSHES TO THE TOP: Defenseman Robbie Russo is tied for the top among all blueliners nationally with 12 goals and is tied for fourth in the nation with his 30 points. Russo s 12 goals are already the seventh-most for an entire season by a Hockey East defenseman since 2002-03. He has the only hat trick in the country this year for a blueliner and the only one in Hockey East since at least the 2011-12 season. Kitimat, B.C./Powell River (BCHL) BJORK BJORK BJORK: Anders Bjork s gametying goal with 3:43 left in regulation at No. 2/3 Boston University on Feb. 20 extended a scoring streak to six games. That streak has ended, but since assisting on a goal in Notre Dame s Jan. 31 win over New Hampshire, the Boston Bruins draftee has four goals and six assists for 10 points. The 10 points since Jan. 31 tie for the third-most nationally among freshmen behind only BU s Jack Eichel and Denver s Danton Heinen, both with 15. PLAYING WITH POWER: Notre Dame s power play unit sprang to life beginning with the Jan. 10 game against Western Michigan. The Irish scored a power play goal in eight consecutive games from that evening on its longest streak since opening the 2011 season with a run of eight consecutive games scoring on the power play. The Irish now have at least one power play goal in 11 of its last 15 games. Notre Dame has scored 15 power play goals since the streak began on Jan. 10. Nationally, the 15 goals are the third-most during this span. Only Boston University (23), and Minnesota (17) have scored more power play goals since Jan. 10 than Notre Dame. Notre Dame s conversion rate of 28.8 percent (15 of 52) is fourth nationally and second only to BU s 35.4 percent in Hockey East. The Irish out-dueled the Terriers on the power play Feb. 20-21 at BU s Agganis Arena, going a combined two for six while BU was one for nine on the power play. HINOSTROZA BULLDOZES BU: Vince Hinostroza factored into all three of Notre Dame s goals in Saturday night s 3-2 upset win at No. 2/3 Boston University s Agganis Arena. Hinostroza was a part of the behind the net cycle that led to Mario Lucia s strike with 0.1 seconds remaining in the first period. The Notre Dame lead swelled to 2-0 early in the second period when Sam Herr scored a power play goal where Hinostroza helped move the puck around the offensive zone. Hinostroza scored the game-winning goal himself on a power play 1:45 into the third period. The sophomore Chicago Blackhawks draft pick leads Notre Dame with both 30 assists and 38 points this year. Since Jan. 31, Hinostroza is tied for second in the nation with 15 points and stands third with 11 assists. VENI VIDI VICI - VINNY: Vince Hinostroza came to Maine, saw the ice and conquered the score sheet as he picked up three points and the Army ROTC first star of the game accolade in both of Notre Dame s contests at Maine, Feb. 6-7. Hinostroza set up three goals in the 4-4 tie on Friday night, each of which either tied the game or gave the Irish the lead. It marked his second three-assist game of the year. No Notre Dame skater has had four assists in a game since Stephen Johns against Canisius on Dec. 29, 2010. Saturday night saw Hinostroza score twice and add an assist in Notre Dame s 5-1 win. Hinostroza continued this run on Feb. 13 contributing to both Irish tallies (a goal and an assist), in a 2-0 win over No. 10 Providence. He went on to have a hand in all three goals during Notre Dame s 3-2 win over No. 2/3 Boston University on Feb. 21. Hinostroza set up two goals, including the game-winner, in the 3-1 win over No. 9 Boston College on Feb. 28. With 30 assists on the year, Hinostroza is third in Hockey East and tied for fourth in the nation. Within the league, only Jack Eichel (37) and Evan Rodrigues (32), both of Boston University, can top the Irish sophomore s 30 helpers while Mike Reilly of Minnesota boasts 31. HOT HINOSTROZA: Vince Hinostroza had an eight-game scoring streak snapped on Feb. 14, one which included five multiple-point games, but he has not slowed down much, including two assists in Saturday night s 3-1 win over Boston College, his 12th multiple-point game of the year. Hinostroza has accumulated 21 points (five goals and 16 assists) since this hot streak began at UConn on Jan. 18. Over that span, he ranks third nationally in points, trailing only Boston University teammates Evan Rodrigues (27) and Jack Eichel (23). Hinostroza has been particularly effective on the power play. Since Jan. 18, 10 of Hinostroza s 21 points have been recorded with a man-advantage, the fourthmost of any player nationally over this period. LUCIA LIGHTS THE LAMP: With 19 goals to his credit this winter, Mario Lucia stands tied for second in Hockey East. Only Ahti Oksanen of Boston University has more with his 22. Lucia s 19 goals tie for 10th in the nation. Lucia s 19 goals on the year are the most by an Irish skater since Anders Lee s 2012-13 team-leading sum of 20. With 27 points on his junior campaign, Lucia is tied for 20th in Hockey East.

Russo joined team captain Steven Fogarty and alternate captains Sam Herr and Peter Schneider in this new position guiding his peers. Robbie s been a leader for our team the whole season and I thought it was time that he got the opportunity to be recognized for that leadership, Jackson said. He s done a great job with our young blue line. He s had an All-America type of year, but it s not just based on his performance. It s based on the fact that he s taken charge of this team and times, put them on his back at times and shown some character. His attitude has been extremely positive and he s well-respected in the locker room. NOTHING GROSS ABOUT IT: Freshman defenseman Jordan Gross has made an immediate impact at both ends of the ice. His 24 points on the year (six goals and 18 assists) rank first in the nation among freshman defensemen and seventh in Hockey East among all rookies. Gross 18 assists are tied for eighth overall by a freshman of any position. His six goals on the year tie for second nationally for freshman defensemen. Gross has done this while maintaining a +11 rating, tied for the best for Notre Dame with his usual defensive partner, Robbie Russo. MOST 2014-15 POINTS BY FR. DEFENSEMEN 24 Jordan Gross Notre Dame 23 Zach Werenski Michigan 21 Noah Hanifin Boston College 17 Mark Friedman Bowling Green A FUN FEBRUARY: Notre Dame s on-ice success has varied widely by month and the alternating rhythm continued with a 4-2-2 record in February. After starting the season with a 5-2- 0 mark in October, the Irish fell on hard times in November, turning in a 1-6-2 record. Notre Dame rebounded to go 3-1-0 in December, but slumped back in January, posting a 2-5-1 record which proved to be a harbinger for a strong February. JACKSON IN POSTSEASON: Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson has had his share of success in conference playoff games. His teams have made 15 conference postseason runs (six at Lake Superior State and nine at Notre Dame) and compiled a 45-16 record (.738). At Lake Superior State, his teams were 24-2 while at Notre Dame, he stands at 21-14. His teams have advanced to the league final in 11 of his 15 seasons (six at LSSU and five at Notre Dame), claiming seven CCHA titles (four at LSSU and three at Notre Dame). JACKSON GETS NO. 400 Head coach Jeff Jackson recorded the 400th victory of his career on Jan. 18 when Notre Dame beat UConn, 6-1, at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Jackson became the seventh active coach to reach this milestone, but has coached at least five fewer years than each of the six coaches ahead of him (BC s Jerry York, Michigan s Red Berenson, Minnesota s Don Lucia, UNH s Dick Umile, Mercyhurst s Rick Gotkin and Quinnipiac s Rand Pecknold). Jackson s efficiency in winning hockey games is remarkable. With a minimum of five Division I seasons, he stands tied for first in the nation in career winning percentage at.660 and ranks third for averaging 25.31 wins per season. NINE WAS FINE: Both Jordan Gross and Mario Lucia posted identical nine-game point scoring streaks which were both snapped on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Northeastern. The identical runs stand as the longest Notre Dame point scoring streaks since Ryan Thang recorded an 11-game streak from Feb. 9 to March 23, 2007. Gross and Lucia both contributed to the scoring on Dec. 5 at UMass and every game afterwards until the second night at Matthews Arena. Lucia had eight goals and three assists for 11 points over the run while Gross had 12 points, coming on three goals and nine assists. EVANS SCORES, IRISH EYES SMILE: The Irish notched the game s first goal of their 2-2 tie at No. 2/3 Boston University on Feb. 20 when Jake Evans rushed up ice for an unassisted goal early in the second period. It should not come as a surprise that Notre Dame would take a point by the end of the night. The Irish have either won or tied every game in which the freshman winger has scored a goal, posting a 4-0-2 mark. No. 2 Boston University is the third ranked team to drop points to the Irish when Evans scores as he also tallied this season in a tie against No. 14 Vermont and a win over No. 6 Miami.

2014-15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Hockey Game Notes Page 5 IRISH DEEP-SIX HUSKIES: Notre Dame s 6-1 win over UConn on Jan. 18 marked its secondlargest win of the season, trailing the sevengoal margin in its 7-0 victory over Niagara on Oct. 25. The five-goal margin of victory against UConn was Notre Dame s widest over a Hockey East foe since beating Boston College, 7-2, on March 14, 2014, at Conte Forum, in the first game of a Hockey East semifinal series that the Irish ultimately claimed. MR. ZERO: Freshman goaltender Cal Petersen recorded his third career shutout on Feb. 13 when he stopped 38 shots in a 2-0 win over No. 10 Providence. He becomes the first Notre Dame freshman goaltender to have three shutouts in his rookie year since David Brown had three in 2003-04. Petersen s first shutout came on Oct. 25, when he kicked out all 23 shots he faced in a 7-0 win over Niagara. That shutout came in his third career start, as he joined a long line of recent Notre Dame goaltenders to get a shutout in their first three starts. Mike Johnson (2009) and Tom O Brien (2008) recorded shutouts in their first career starts while Jordan Pearce (2006) and Brown (2003) did it in their second starts. Petersen joins Brad Phillips (2009) who recorded his first career shutout in his third start. For the season, Petersen is now 10-13-3 with a 2.39 goals-against average and a.923 save percentage. Petersen s three shutouts tie for third in the nation among freshmen. MOST 2014-15 SHUTOUTS BY FR. The previous games came on March 14, 2014, at Boston College and Nov. 13, 2013, versus Merrimack. For the season, Schneider has four goals and four assists for eight points. FOUR FOR FOGARTY: Junior Steven Fogarty enjoyed a productive weekend when the Irish faced UConn on Jan. 16-18. Fogarty had a pair of assists in each game for a four-helper weekend. Fogarty would add his third multiplepoint game of January when he scored twice in a 5-3 win over UNH on Jan. 31. Fogarty s 16 points on the season include seven power play points, second on the team. He helped set up both of Notre Dame s power play goals against the Huskies. SIX IN THE NHL: With Bryan Rust playing in his first NHL game on Dec. 13 for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Notre Dame had six former players playing in the National Hockey League this winter. Rust joined Erik Condra (Ottawa), Anders Lee (New York Islanders), Riley Sheahan (Detroit), Ian Cole (St. Louis) and Kyle Palmieri (Anaheim). The most players the Irish have ever had in the NHL at one time is seven. CAREER YEAR: Irish junior left wing Thomas DiPauli (Caldaro, Italy) chipped in a pair of assists in the 7-5 win over Massachusetts on December 5 and, at that early juncture of the season, already had career highs in both assists and points. DiPauli presently has 18 assists and 24 points this season. The speedy forward had just three goals and two assists for five points in 26 games during an injury-filled 2013-14 season. As a freshman, he had his previous best season with five goals and seven assists for 12 points in 41 games. Through 36 games this year, he is fifth on the Notre Dame scoresheet with his 24 points. His 18 assists tie for 15th in Hockey East. Nardella assisted on a pair of goals to help lift the Americans to the gold medal. THE BIG KAT: Sophomore goaltender Chad Katunar stopped a personal three-game winless skid (0-2-1) with the win over Massachusetts on Dec. 5. Katunar made 20 saves while giving up a season-high five goals versus the Minutemen. In his previous three starts, Katunar set a career high for saves in a game, making 35 stops in the overtime loss to Union College on Nov. 28. Prior to that, in back-toback games against UMass Lowell (Nov. 20-21), Katunar had a then career-high, 32-save game in back-to-back contests against the River Hawks. For the year, Katunar is 5-3-2 on the year with a 3.17 goals-against average and a.896 save percentage. PENALTY SHOTS: Freshman center Connor Hurley was awarded a penalty shot with 6:37 left in the third period on Nov. 15 versus Merrimack. After making a great move to deke goaltender Rasmus Tirronen, Hurley had the whole net to shoot at, but the puck rolled off his stick and wide of the goal. The penalty shot was the first for a Notre Dame player since Dec. 6, 2013, when Jeff Costello was awarded one versus Massachusetts and scored in a 5-3 win. The last time a Notre Dame player missed a penalty shot came on Jan. 26, 2013 when Anders Lee was stopped in a game versus Ferris State. 2014-15 TALE OF THE TAPE ND UM 2013-14 record 23-15-2 8-22-4 2013-14 Conference record 9-9-2/t7th 4-13-3/10th Letterwinners returning 11 of 21 16 of 27 Current overall record 15-16-5 10-21-2 Winning percentage.486.333 Conference record 10-7-5 5-16-1 Home record 8-9-3 6-10-1 Road record 6-6-2 3-10-1 One-goal games record 4-6 5-4 Overtime record 2-1-5 1-2-2 Last weekend 1-1-0 0-1-0 Last 5 games 2-2-1 1-3-1 When scoring first... 13-4-4 6-4-1 When ahead after 1st period 10-2-2 2-2-1 When ahead after 2nd period 12-1-2 7-4-1 Goals per game 2.86 2.79 Shots per game 28.1 27.6 Shooting percentage.102.101 Opponent shots per game 31.2 33.5 Shot margin -3.1-5.9 PPG percentage.148.147 PP chances per game 3.75 4.12 PP goals per game 0.56 0.61 SH goals allowed 2 4 Penalties per game 4.50 5.67 Penalty-killing percentage.846.758 Opponent PP chances per game 3.78 4.64 Opponent PPGs per game 0.58 1.12 Short-handed goals for 2 7 Goals-against average 2.62 4.12 Save percentage.915.876 Goal margin/game +7-45 (+0.19) (-1.36) 1st period goals/game 0.94 0.58 1st period goal margin +11-17 (34-23) (19-36) 2nd period goals/game 0.92 1.00 2nd period goal margin -6-3 (33-39) (33-36) 3rd period goals/game 0.94 1.18 3rd period goal margin +1-24 (34-33) (39-63) Overtime goals 2 1 Overtime goals against 1 2 BLOCK THAT SHOT: Defenseman Andy Ryan (Jr., Brighton, Mich.) leads Notre Dame with 63 blocked shots this season (1.75 per game). The four, junior Steven Fogarty, sophomore Ben Ostlie and freshmen Connor Hurley and Bo Brauer, were all teammates with the Hornets in recent seasons, winning Minnesota State titles in 2010 (Fogarty and Ostlie) and in 2013 (Hurley and Brauer). Those four are following a long list of former Hornets to attend Notre Dame, a list that includes former captains Anders Lee, Ryan Thang and Dan Carlson. The remaining three Minnesota natives are junior Mario Lucia and freshmen Tony Bretzman (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Jordan Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.). THE SHOOTIST: Throughout his Notre Dame hockey career, senior defenseman Robbie Russo has been encouraged by his coaching staff to shoot the puck. As a senior, the message has sunk in, as the talented defenseman leads the Irish in shots on goal with 100. His next closest competitor for the team lead is Vince Hinostroza with 93. Russo had a career-high nine shots on goal in the 5-3 win over Lake Superior State on Oct. 17. PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMO- BILES: Senior right wing Peter Schneider had an interesting week prior to the series versus Vermont (Oct. 31-Nov.1). Early in the week, Schneider got the bad news that his grandmother had passed away in his native Austria. He returned home on Tuesday (Oct. 28) to be with his family and to attend her funeral. On Friday (Oct. 31), he left Vienna at 7 a.m. in Austria (1:00 a.m. at Notre Dame) and flew from Vienna to Frankfurt, Germany, and after a layover there, it was on to Chicago. From Chicago, he traveled by car to South Bend, arriving just after 5 p.m. to prepare for the game. He spent 14 hours flying and then a two-hour trip in the car, covering seven time zones. In both games, Schneider took a regular shift, saw action on the power play and penaltykilling units and set up one goal each night by Mario Lucia. On Sunday, Nov. 2, Schneider rested. PRESEASON HOCKEY EAST POLLS: Two preseason polls by the Hockey East coaches and the media that covers Hockey East have the Irish in two different spots at the start of the regular season. The coaches and the media were in agreement on the No. 1 spot in the poll as Providence College was the top pick by each group. In the coaches poll, the Friars received seven first-place votes and 127 total points while the Eagles had three first-place votes in the second spot on the way to 120 points. Don Lucia, a 1981 Notre Dame graduate and the head coach of the Gophers, faced his son, Irish left wing Mario Lucia. Don Lucia played four seasons (1977-81) at Notre Dame for Coach Lefty Smith, as a defenseman where he saw action in 124 games, scoring seven goals with 23 assists for 30 points. Now in his 16th season as the head coach at Minnesota, Lucia has been a collegiate head coach for 28 seasons. He is currently a director of regional development in Notre Dame s development office. Anders Bjork also has another family tie to Irish hockey, as his cousin is former Irish standout Erik Condra, who is currently a member of the Ottawa Senators. As the fourth son to follow his father to Notre Dame, Anders joins current Irish left wing Mario Lucia (Don Lucia) and graduated players Kevin Nugent (Kevin Nugent, Sr.) and Rory Walsh (Brian Walsh) to play at Notre Dame after their fathers. HERE COME THE HAWKS: For the second consecutive year, the Chicago Blackhawks opened their 2014 training camp by spending three days - Sept. 19-21 - at the Compton Family Ice Arena on the Notre Dame campus. Chicago general manager Stan Bowman is a 1995 graduate of the University. Rookie defenseman Stephen Johns graduated from Notre Dame in May 2014 after four seasons on the Irish blue line.
