2 Precision Rifleman Borescopes: Their Evolution and Application in Firearms. A borescope is an optical device that is used to see inside of objects that would otherwise be inaccessible for viewing. Borescopes were first developed to look inside of a cannon. Another version, known as an endoscope, was used to examine cadavers. Refined many times over the years, endoscopes have resulted in the wonders of minimally invasive sugery. Valve Borescopes are not autoclavable, so they can not be used in medical applications for humans. Borescopes are dramatically less expensive than endoscopes, so they have gained wide acceptance in aerospace, automotive, metal working, firearms, and manufacturing applications. Designed specifically for use in firearms, the Hawkeye Borescope has become the standard of the industry among gunsmiths, benchrest shooters, varmint hunters, firearms manufacturers, and forensic scientists. Weld inside tube Faucet Shooters use it to search for tool marks, defects in chambers and rifling, erosion, and fouling that seriously affect accuracy. Gunsmiths use it to diagnose problems, to monitor processes such as chambering and lapping, and to justify their services. Manufacturers depend on the Hawkeye for research and development when they need to inspect the quality of incoming barrels and in quality assurance on the shop floor. Copper & tool mark Shot out! Buyers and sellers of used firearms examine bores to make certain that there are no surprises lurking in the barrel. Forensic Scientists (the real CSI guys,) use it to determine twist and land count, to examine sound suppressors, and to preserve valuable DNA evidence that can link a firearm to a crime. Match grade rifiling The Hawkeye offers two viewing angles. The zero degree direction-of-view provides an impressive view of twist and forewarns shooters of pending shell separation in well used brass. Twist

January, 2015 Precision Rifleman 3 The ninety-degree direction-of-view allows the viewer to inspect the chamber, leade, and bore of a firearm from muzzle to breach. The key applications for a shooter are to monitor erosion and to ensure that their cleaning regimen is working. Usually it isn t! Leade at 90 DOV Video cameras available from Gradient Lens make it possible to view an image in color on a monitor. Alternatively, the signal from the borescope and video camera can be captured, stored, and transmitted with a computer. Picture this a gunsmith in Iowa receives a rifle from his customer in New Jersey. Upon inspecting it with his borescope it is clear that the guy in New Jersey needs a new barrel. The gunsmith s recommendation to the customer by phone fell upon deaf ears. But when he sent a video of the toolmarks, erosion, and fouling in the customer s barrel on the internet, he got the order! Cartridge case at 0 DOV Gas port erosion viewed by eye, on a monitor, or on a computer Occasionally, people think that it would be smart to buy a flexible borescope to inspect their firearms. Not a good idea. Flexible borescopes utilize fiber optic strands to transmit light and images and are incapable of producing images of equal quality to solid optical glass. Crown Further, an industrial quality flexible borescope costs far more than a rigid scope. Inexpensive flexible scopes are generally not repairable. The bill for those that are can reach thousands of dollars. So a rigid borescope is actually less expensive, better suited, and more flexible in a shooting application than a flexible borescope. Green eye cup The Shooting Edition of the Hawkeye Borescope is sold exclusively to the shooting market and can be recognized by a green eyecup. This version features upgraded optics and a new mirror technology that protects the mirror from the harsh chemicals we routinely shove down the barrel of our firearms. Hawkeye users experience 360 inspection of lands and grooves with the clarity of a medical endoscope. 6 Precision Rifleman Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest at Three Points Range in Tucson by Dale Arenson It appears that fall is in the air. At the 7AM start it was a very pleasant 75 degrees. Daytime temps were only in the mid 90 s. Of course, the monsoon season could have something to do with it. Fortunately, while we were shooting, we were spared the lightning storms, down pours, microbursts and wind shears. We had a decent turn out of 8 shooters which worked out well for assigning the benches, 4 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. Conditions for relays 1 and 2 were about average with a 5 to 10 mph right cross wind, but deteriorated for relays 3 and 4. Wind velocities didn t get much over 15 mph, but they were twitchy enough to cause headaches for the later shooters. Frequently increasing, or changing direction just before or during the record period. Steve Everson handily won Heavy Gun Score, while Dale Arenson squeaked by in Light Gun Group and Score, plus Heavy Gun Group. Ross Herrick took second in Light Group even while struggling with the nasty winds of relay three. Bill Warner shot the smallest group in Heavy with a 6.56 and Mike Billotte shot high score in Light Gun. There are times when some of our regular shooters use the 6BR and it does quite well, frequently taking home top honors. So if your short range gun needs a little more exercise, bring it down and see how it does at 1,000 yards. There are plenty of benches and targets still available for more shooters. If you are within a reasonable drive to the Three Points Range, west of Tucson, come out, join the fun and shoot with us the second Saturday of every month. Oak Hill Gun Club: The Wood Collector by Cecil Peterson It looks like it s going to be a really cold winter. This collector may know something the rest of us don t about the upcoming winter here in Iowa. Perhaps he will need all the wood he can gather to keep warm through the winter? I m sure he is gathering the wood for insurance. Every match he enters he takes home wood and frequently big pieces; better for a hot fire. As much wood as he is gathering and leaving little for the rest of us, I m sure we will be invited to his house during any cold spells as he will have the hot fire. Oak Hill Gun Club had a small load of wood to divide on July 20, 2014; the heavy varmint type. The collector lost the 100 yard small group wood to Keith Christianson and HV100 wood to Kenneth Stone. At 200 he again lost the small group to Kenneth Stone. I think he remembered how cold it gets in Iowa. He now won t let go of any wood and took the HV200 in commanding fashion and scared the rest of the pack away letting him take all the big pieces of wood (HV200 and Grand). The wood collector and list of wantabes are listed separately for your review. There was also an Unlimited (rail gun) contest which was dominated by another wood collector of long standing. He won the 100, 200 and Grand Agg. The highlight of the day was a charming young lady (Maggie Carstensen) came to shoot her first registered match. Pictured above from left are Jerry King, Dean Ekstrom, Keith Christianson, Kenneth Stone Maggie Carstensen, Bob Cotton and Jim Carstensen. The competitors that missed this match missed some really nice conditions and a very good time. This was our annual score match paying tribute to two of our enthusiastic hunter shooters of the past; Guy Chism and his son-in-law Danny Jarvis. We had a light and pretty steady wind from the west on Saturday and more wind and heavy mirage on Sunday from both left and right. It was a challenge. All in all, however, there were some readable conditions for this range. In the Danny Jarvis VFS match, Ron Hoehn shot a new range record of 500-31X. Ron shot a Stolle Polar smithed by himself with a Bartlein barrel. Competitors that like to shoot score matches should really put this double match on their list to attend next year. Results for the Guy Chism Mississippi Valley Memorial Hunter Match: Matthew Hon won at 100-yards with a 250-16X, followed by Richard Hunnewell and Tom Hencken in third. At 200 yards Matthew Hon held first again with

January, 2015 Precision Rifleman 9 248-5X, with James Lederer second and Tom Hencken in third. The grand aggregate winners were, not surprisingly, Matthew Hon 498-21X, with Tom Hencken in second and Richard Hunnewell rounding out the top three. This is Matthew s first year of competition and it look like he is catching on pretty quickly. He clearly has a good rifle as he beat some pretty decent shooters! Results for the Danny Jarvis Missouri State Memorial Hunter Match: Wade Hunnewell took first at HTR100 with 250-16X, with Joe Hemkens in second and Richard Hunnewell was third. At 200 yards Clark Greene won with 246-3X. Joe Hemkens was second and Wade Hunnewell took third. The grand aggregate winner was Wade Hunnewell with 495-18X followed by Joe Hemkens wand Clark Greene. At 200 yards Wayne Corley won with 250-7X, with Bill Haynes second and Ron Hoehn in third. The grand agg winner was Bill Haynes 500-26X, Wayne Corley in second and Ron Hoehn third. North Texas Shooters Varmint For Score On August 17, 2014, North Texas Shooters Association held their Varmint For Score match with twelve shooters in attendance. The Pullum Brothers dominated the day taking turns at yardage wins starting with Dwayne in the 100-yard competition then trading to brother Richard in the 200-yard stage. Ultimately it would be Richard s win at the Grand Aggregate when the last shot was fired. Honorable mentions to Dr. Tim and Renard Alexander for giving the brothers a good run for the money in the Texas heat. Thanks to everyone for attending. Saturday morning, four Hunter guns and five VFS guns were being contested. The weather for the start of the 200-yard match was 80 with wind from the south around 5-10 miles per hour. As the day went along so did the temperature and the winds. By the start of the 300- yard relay around 1pm, the winds had picked up to 10 to 15 with some gusts up to 25 miles per hour and the temperature was already in the low 90 s. In Hunter gun, Jason Stanley took first place honors at 200yds with 245-7X followed by Mike Bigelow with a 244-1X for second and Jeff Shultz with 237-3X in third. In the VFS at 200, Ronnie Berg held first with 247-4X, second went to Rod Dewey with a 246-5X and third was Ron Miller with a 243-3X. Moving out to 300-yards in Hunter class, Jason Stanley again took first place with a 245-3X followed by Jeff Shultz with a 236-1X and Mike Bigelow with a 233-4X for second and third places respectively. In the VFS at 300, it was Ron Miller garnering first place with a 246-3X. Second went to Ronnie Berg with 243-1X and third was Mike Durbin with a 239-1X.

12 Precision Rifleman The 200-300 yard aggregate awards in Hunter class went to Jason Stanley with 490-10X and a nice first place finish followed by Mike Bigelow with 477-5X in second and Jeff Shultz with 473-4X in third. Likewise for VFS aggregate, the winners were Ronnie Berg in first with 490-5X, second was Ron Miller with 489-6X and Rod Dewey held third with 484-6X. On Sunday, the fifteen competitors that showed up for this Varmint for Score match were greeted with just about the same type of weather as Saturday s match. The morning winds were a little milder to start but they picked up sooner and became just as gusty in the afternoon. That may have been because we started the Sunday match an hour earlier also. That hour helped to get the guys from out of state on the road a little sooner. The 200-yard VFS top three were Aryln Copley, 249-7X, Brad Borjes 249-3X in second and Jeff Shultz 248-7X in third. The 300-yard stage winners were Jason Stanley 247-1X, Mike Bigelow 245-4X in second and Aryln Copley in third with 244. The 200-300-yard VFS aggregate awards were as follows: Jason Stanley in first with 495-4X, Aryln Copley, 493-7X, and Mike Bigelow 492-7X in second and third place. Top Junior award in the VFS match went to Nicholas Borjes with 479-7X. The top X count for match to Mike Toby with 10X s and High X count for Two Gun was Jason Stanley s with 14. In the picture from L-R are Ronnie Berg, Aryln Copley, Jason Stanley, Jeff Shultz, Ron Miller (head showing), Mike Toby, Junior- Nicholas Borjes, Brad Borjes and Mike Bigelow. We hope that everyone had some fun and that you are making plans to return for our next match in 2015. 14 Precision Rifleman Butch Kimmell Memorial Light and Heavy Varmint Prairie Dog Target Club Aug 30-31, 2014 Thirteen competitors were present for the Butch Kimmell Memorial Light and Heavy Varmint match. The weather was cool and windy on Saturday with a snappy north wind making the flags bob back and forth like nervous bobble head dolls. Bill Pond, shooting the 22 Mongrel, won the LV100 with Terry Hettich and Rodney Brown close behind. Bill shot a 0.166 for one of his 3 small groups of the weekend. Rodney Brown easily won the LV200 followed by Bill Pond and Dave Tunbridge. Bill Pond again shot the small group, a 0.303. Rodney Brown s lead in the 200 yard gave him the light varmint aggregate win with Bill Pond second and Terry Hettich third. On Saturday evening we enjoyed Don Deckert s famous Cream Can Stew which he always serves at the last match of the summer. On Sunday the winds switched to SW to W and we had clear and sunny weather after a light rain delayed the start of the match for about an hour. The heavy varmint completed the four gun for the year. We started with the HV200 and Tom Evans edged out Bill Pond for the win. Bill Pond shot a 0.337 for his third small group of the weekend. In the HV100, Rodney Brown edged out Terry Hettich with Mike Beard taking third. Mike Beard took small group honors with a 0.092 screamer. In the heavy varmint grand aggregate Rodney Brown edged out Bill Pond by 2 ten-thousands for the win with Terry Hettich third. The winner of the two gun and of the Butch Kimmell Memorial trophy was Rodney Brown. Second place went to Bill Pond and Terry Hettich was third. Rod also won the Prairie Dog Target Club Three Gun with Terry Hettich second and Tom Evans third. The 2014 Four Gun winner was (you guessed it) Rodney Brown with Bill Pond second and Terry Hettich third. In the picture knealing are Terry, Rodney and Bill. Standing L-R are Dave Tunbridge, Tom Stiner, Keith Hakeman, Dan Dowling, Mike Beard & Tom Evans. Along with our local shooters, we also had in attendance Rob Seeman, Gary Ocock, Larry White, George Lozano, Jeff Williams, and brothers Bruce and Denny Andrews, travelling from as far away as AZ, CO, CA, ID and Canada. A wonderful BBQ was assembled on Saturday evening with everyone contributing and enjoying. Bob Boldman s 70th birthday was celebrated and as always, we were all thankful to be part of such a great group of people pursuing such a rewarding sport. Special thanks go out to Larry and Teresa Boers for their amazing pulled pork shoulder and to Steve Kostanich and the Puget Sound Benchrest Association for their help with the costs. This year along with the Sniper King and Sam Wilson Memorial Trophies, the new Agg King Trophy was also awarded. Where the Sniper King is given to the single best 10 shot group at 200 yards, the Agg King is given to the best 10 shot aggregate at 200 yards. The Sam Wilson Memorial is given for the best grand aggregate of 10 shot groups at both 100 and 200 yards, and 5 shot groups at 100 and 200. Wind conditions throughout the weekend were often quite tricky. The mornings began with a chill in the air but temperatures quickly rose into the high 70 s to mid-80 s. Mirage was heavy but not much of an issue for the rail gunners. For the third year in a row, Gary Ocock (pictured p19) won the Sam Wilson Memorial Trophy. Gary earned the distinction by shooting an impressive.1797 grand agg, with second place going to Eric Stanton.2091, and third place to Larry Boers.2093. Gary also shot smallest groups in both of the 5 shot competitions, scoring a.093 at 100 yards and a.175 at 200 yards. Eric Stanton shot smallest groups in both of the 10 shot competitions, with his.128 at 100 yards and.275 at 200 yards. The Sniper King Trophy winner was Eric Stanton (pictured right) with his excellent.275 group, the smallest 10 shot group scored in 15 matches at 200 yards. Second place went to Steve Kostanich.296, and third place to Gary Ocock.302. Eric also won the inaugural Agg King Trophy with his terrific 10 shot, 200 yard aggregate of.1968. Second place went to Gary Ocock.2039, and third place to George Lozano.2050. Also testifying to the level of competition over the weekend, there are now 3 NBRSA world records pending for shooters Gary Ocock, Eric Stanton and Larry Boers. Good luck gentlemen and congratulations to all who competed! Pictured L-R above are Jeff Lewis, George Lozano, Steve Kostanich, Gary Ocock, Larry Boers & Eric Stanton. January, 2015 Precision Rifleman 21 Utah State Championship Joel Nader Wins Two Gun, Larry White Wins Three & Four Gun August 2-3, 2014 Well, the weather cooperated and we didn t have any afternoon monsoons interrupt out tournament; however, hot days and blustery canyon winds made for challenging conditions. Partly cloudy skies during the weekend did moderate the mirage to a tolerable level, so, for the first time in the past few years, one screamer group was shot; a pretty.055 by Rudy Carnesecca in the LV100. That being said, there were no teen aggs to be had this weekend. The quirky personality of this range is hard to overcome on a good day and it tormented us once again. Nonetheless, we all had a great time trying and are looking forward to our tournaments next year when better aggs will be had! Tom Guisewhite started things off with the small group in match one, a.164. Bruce Black shot a.151 for small group in match two and Dan Dowling followed a nice.171 in match three. In match 4 Rudy shoots his marvelous.055 for the small group of the match and yardage. On his first visit to our range, Joel Nader shot the small group for match 5, a.156. Winning the LV100 in her very first tournament, is the pretty and talented fifteen year old young lady, Angel Sedgwick. She is the apple of her Grandpa Bob s eye and his coaching paid off big time as she shot a.2492 agg and bested the boys! Congratulations Angel! Following Angel is Dave Gibson in second and Tom Stiner in third place. Truman Wilson won match one and two of the HV100 shooting.162 and.178 small groups. Larry White won match 3 and small group for the yardage with a.113. Randy Higgs won match 4 with a.210 group and Bruce Black won match five with a.200. Larry White won HV100 with a nice.2282 agg with Truman Wilson in second and Joel Nader in third. Tom Stiner started Sunday morning with a.442 in the HV200 match 1. Joel Nader and Keith Kirkman both shot.420 groups to win matches 2 and 3. Winning match 4 is Tom Guisewhite with a.407 and Dave Gibson shot a.401 to win match 5 and yardage small group on his way to winning the HV200 with a.3100 agg. Joel Nader took second and Todd Jensen third. Winning the Heavy Varmit Grand was Joel Nader with a.3083 Grand Agg. Truman Wilson was second and Todd Jensen third. Conditions seemed a little nicer after lunch as Tom Stiner won match 1 of the LV200 with a.409. Jim Bawden won match 2 with a.471 and Joel Nader won match 3 with a.459. Truman Wilson shot the small group for the yardage and won match 4 with a nice.368. Pete Savage finished up our tournament by winning match 5 Sunday afternoon with a.444 small group. Joel Nader won the LV200 with a.2690 agg with Truman Wilson in second and Bruce Black in third. Super Dave Gibson won the Light Varmint Grand with a.2879 agg. Joel Nader is second and Truman Wilson third. www.bergerbullets.com 4275 N. Oak Hill Gun Club: Remember? Do you remember your first day of school, first girl or boyfriend, first date, obtaining your driver s license, first car, graduating from high school or college, first job, wedding day, birth of your first born child, favorite friends from grade school, high school or college or your favorite teacher or instructor? All of these are memorable times of our lives, however there are also times we all remember doing recreational activities too. In benchrest, one remembers the first small group of a match. The first aggregate win and even more memorable, one s first Grand Aggregate win. It also is a pleasure to do this in front of your friends and your parents even though there is a lot of pressure associated with this scenario. Well congratulations are in order to our second-year newbie, Kenneth Stone, at our local club. This was done with a used gun brought from a local club shooter (that perhaps regrets selling this rifle?) He has won the 100 yard aggregate before but has had difficulty with the 200 yard venue. Sound familiar? Well August 17, 2014 was his day to win that elusive first grand aggregate. Match winners at 100 were Harry Rowold, Larry Rickertson, Jim Carstensen, Harry Rowold again and Jim Schmidt. Harry Rowold s 0.117 was the smallest group and Jim Carstensen won the 100 yard aggregate with 0.2136. Match winners at 200 yards were John Hutchins, Kenneth Stone, Jim Carstensen (twice) and Keith Christianson, who also shot the small group of 0.274. The 200-yard LV winner was Kenneth Stone with 0.2564. We had four new shooters at this match; Jim Frazen, Ethan Dalldorf, Jamie McCormack and Joe Morgan. We hope they return frequently and consider us their home benchrest range. Thanks to our workers; Range Officers Jim & Jerry, Curt - the target crew, statistician Dave. These guys make the January, 2015 Precision Rifleman 25 match a success. 26 Precision Rifleman Big Win for Smallwood at the 2014 Tumbleweed As hot air balloons dotted the skies to the east, calm mornings both Saturday and Sunday greeted the 25 shooters who came to the Duke City for the 2014 Tumbleweed. Saturday for both 100 yard matches was Roy Damron s day. The man from appropriately named Rifle, Colorado won both the Light Varmint and Heavy Varmint. In the morning, Damron was the only shooter with a sub.2000 aggregate; winning with a.1912. There was a traffic jam for second, but Jack Snyder s.2038 bested Joel Nader s.2042, Todd Tyler s.2044, and Jim Hemmert s.2062. Tyler took home the trophy for small group with a.080 in the third match. In the afternoon in the 100 yard Heavy Varmint, Damron s winning.2252 was punctuated in the fifth match when he shot a.131 to win the trophy for small group for the yardage. While he didn t win small group trophies, Damron also shot the smallest group in the fifth match in the LV100, and the HV200. Steve Murphy s.2548 was second, and Rusty Morman s.2592 put him in third place. Sunday morning, Steve Murphy, from Lubbock, Texas started the HV200 match with a bang, winning the trophy for small group with a.152. That small group carried Murphy to the win in the yardage with a.2212 aggregate. Joel Nader from Las Vegas, Nevada came in second with a.2369, and Uncle Larry Baggett came in third place with a.2427. Jim Hemmert started things off in the afternoon for the LV200 with a.313. Hemmert, from Kalvesta, KS, hadn t been to the new range in Albuquerque, and was impressed with the facilities. He said he was going to come back in the future. But the afternoon belonged to Scott Smallwood of Longmont, Colorado. Smallwood, who said he hadn t shot in two years didn t look out of practice with a dominating win.1842 aggregate, and a small group trophy of.178 in the third match. Ed Adams came in second with a.2119, and Hemmert finished 3rd with a.2373. In the Light Varmint Grand Aggregate, Hemmert took home the first place trophy with a.2218, followed by Smallwood at.2229, and Todd Tyler s.2230. In the Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate, Steve Murphy took home first place with a.2380, followed by Larry Baggett s.2526 and Ed Adams.2569. Finally, when the scores were added up, Scott Smallwood s.2417 bested the field in the Two Gun Grand Aggregate, followed by Steve Murphy s.2443, and Joel Nader s.2463. 30 Precision Rifleman less of a problem. It was Doug Schwind who read the ill conditions best by winning the 200 yard contest with his aggregate of.2735. The small group was shot by Paul Steinman with a.255. By day s end it was Mark Walker who took the Sporter grand agg with a.2509. Second place went to Doug Schwind.2625 and third place to Steve Kostanich.2656. Sunday s Light Varmint contest started with temperatures in the mid 60 and the same light but tricky wind. As the day wore on, the temperature climbed into the 90 s and the wind strengthened. Steve Kostanich led the way all day, winning both the 100 and 200 yard contests. Steve s aggregates were.2320 and.2660, respectively, which combined for a winning Light Varmint grand agg of.2490. Second place went to Paul Steinman.2733 and third place to Allen Condiff.2740. Steve also shot both of the small groups with a.128 at 100 yards, and a.249 at 200 yards. Way to clean up, Steve! Not surprisingly, this year the Del Bishop Trophy went to Steve Kostanich who won with a 4-gun aggregate of.2422. Second place went to Mark Walker.2529 and third place to Larry Boers.2723. In the group photo participants are L-R: Dan Kjelland, Mark Walker, Paul Steinman, Steve Kostanich, Larry Boers & Allen Condiff. Congratulations to all on their accomplishments!
