NHS Crystal Crown Judged Pleasure Ride Sunday, October 9th, 2016 Welcome to the 5 th leg of the 2016 Crystal Crown Ride Series. NHS thanks those who support our organization and our ride, year after year, and to those joining us for the first time. ** Our JPR theme is Olympic Games Equestrian Style ** BONUS: Team Competition Option!!! General Information: The ride will be held at the Bridle Trail at Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane, VA (near Paris, VA). The ride will be approximately 10 miles long and will include the new trails on the West side of Route 17. Trails are a mixed terrain to include pastures, stream crossing and the mountain trail. Note: we will include a small portion of the mountain (only up the area where the benches are located, i.e. last year s Hooka Caterpillar obstacle. Shoes are recommended but not required Check-in will begin at 8:00 am. Riders will be notified of their pre-assigned starting times by email, or by phone if no email, no later than October 5th Groups of 4 or more, who wish to ride together, should submit their entry forms in one mailing, if possible Junior riders (17 and under) must be accompanied by a rider 18 years or older and must wear an approved hard hat and boots with heels. Under age riders are not to ride off alone and/or ahead of of age rider. There are no exceptions to this rule Trailer parking is ample; water and portable rest room facilities are onsite. Due the leasing rights, the parking field is not mowed. If needed, bring bug spray for yourself and your horse For the safety of our volunteers and participants, leave your dog(s) at home and leave your horse at your trailer when checking in at the Registration Table. Due to liability, NHS does not allow non-registered riders to ride along or participate at any obstacle. Any rider on the course must have registered for the event. Additionally, NHS does not allow horses in training to be ponied during this event Stallions may be entered only with prior permission of the Ride Secretary. If prior permission is granted, stallions should be marked front and back with yellow ribbons Lunch meal will be provided to registered/paid riders and volunteers No Awards Ceremony Onsite! Scores will be emailed to the riders within 5 business days and all awards/ribbons will be mailed within two weeks of the event This ride will be held rain or shine, but may be cancelled or rescheduled if the weather or trail is considered hazardous. Final notice of rescheduled or cancelled ride will be emailed to you by Saturday, October 8 th at 6:00 pm so when in doubt, check your email Team Event One of your fellow riders and our 2015 Overall Grand Champion suggested that we incorporate a Team Competition into our JPR. This sounded like a fun twist so let s give it a go. Here s how it will work we will have teams consisting of 2 riders. You choose your partner! Each rider participating will pay an additional $5 to register. This will be a 50/50 Jackpot so the team who has the highest cumulative points combined will win 50% of all funds collected for the team event. So, if we have 20 teams, that s $100 collected, of which the winning team that wins will receive $50 as the prize. There will be only one winner there will not be a 2nd-6 th placing. So, choose your partner and sign up!

Obstacles The course will consist of natural and/or man-made obstacles. Horse and rider will be judged on their ability to negotiate these obstacles safely, trail manners, general horsemanship and ability to complete the ride within the prescribed time as determined by the Course Designers. Time limit(s) will be set for each obstacle and will be strictly enforced. Riders are not to coach or provide direction to friends, children or any participant while they engaged at the obstacle. Judging Riders will be awarded 0-10 points per obstacle. Rider/horse will receive 1 point for an attempt, only if the horse engages the obstacle. A flat out refusal may warrant a zero and is at the discretion of the Judge(s). Points will be deducted for exceeding said set limit(s) and for coaching, either receiving or giving. Judges will be instructed on how to deduct in the event of this situation. Riders may ask for their scores after completing each obstacle. Decision of the onsite judges is FINAL and is not to be disputed. Unsportsmanlike Conduct Riders are hereby notified that any act of unsportsmanlike conduct, whether verbal or physical disrespect to Judges, event volunteers or other riders will result in loss of points on the particular obstacle and/or shall be grounds for immediate disqualification. Additionally, any abuse to your horse, at the staging area or at any time during this event shall be grounds for immediate disqualification. If disqualification occurs, the rider shall forfeit all entry fees and prizes and will be asked to immediately leave the premises. No exceptions will be made. The Judge(s) and Ride Managers have the final say. Gaited vs. Non-Gaited All horses are to perform paces and movements as described by the Judges Assistant. If a canter is part of the obstacle description and you wish to receive the maximum points allowed, then you must canter as requested. Please do not discuss, dispute or argue this point with the Judges as they have been instructed on the requirements for all horses to perform the same movements, regardless of breed. Awards/Prizes Grand Champion and Reserve Champion awards will be given to the two high point winners. Up to six ribbons will be awarded in each Breed, Age and Novice Division. Breed categories are established when there are 6 or more horses of any particular registered breed. If your horse does not meet the 6 minimum criteria, said horse will be placed in Other Registered or Other Registered Gaited. For riders who send in their application without breed papers, their horse will be placed in the Grade category. Novice Horse and Novice Rider Divisions In order to qualify for either Novice Horse or Novice Rider, either you and/or your horse have competed in 3 or less JPR s as of the first CC JPR, which was the BES ride on 4-24-2016. This includes JPR s outside of the Crystal Crown Series. Registration/Fees The fee for pre-registered entries is $40 for NHS Members and $45 for non-nhs Members. All entries must be received no later than October 3rd, 2016. Any entry after that date is on a space available basis and will include a $10 late fee. The ride is limited to 150 riders; entries will be logged in by postmark. If you are planning to ride in a group of 4 or more, please send all paperwork in one envelope if possible. Substitution/Cancellations It will be possible to substitute the horse or the rider on the day of the ride due to extenuating circumstances. However, you may not substitute both. If substituting the horse, please have a copy of the current Coggins and Registration papers (if applicable) when you go to Registration. If you know in advance that you are making a change, please contact Kari Boberek before the ride so as to prevent additional work for our volunteers at the Registration table. No refunds unless the ride is cancelled! Event Contact Ride Manager/Secretary: Kari Boberek at 571-220-9234 or email: kari.boberek@bt.com

Ride Goals and Safety: First and foremost, the goal of the day is to have fun!!! This is a PLEASURE RIDE. Enjoy the day, be grateful for time spent with your horse, appreciate your fellow riders and most importantly, thank the volunteers!!! Without them, this wonderful event ceases to exist. We expect all riders to observe the rules of good horsemanship, sportsmanship and safety. Included but not limited to: 1) Pass with permission and only when there is room, 2) do not run up behind other riders, 3) do not crowd one another on the trail or at obstacles and 4) and do not ask something of your horse that he/she is not capable of doing and/or that might put you or others in harm s way. This event should be a positive experience for both horse and rider. Alcohol is not permitted at Sky Meadows State Park. Anyone seen in possession or under the influence will be asked to leave the premises immediately. Ride fees, parking fees and/or awards will not be returned and/or awarded for anyone who violates this rule. As we are utilizing the new trails on the West side of Route 17, we have secured the services of Fauquier law enforcement to assist with the road crossing. It is important that riders NOT cross the road until the officer has given you the clear to proceed. Route 17 is a very busy road and your safety is our priority. Head protection for riders 18 and over is strongly encouraged and recommended by NHS. Horses known to kick should have a red ribbon in their tails. Green horses should be marked with green ribbons in their tails. Stallions, if permission is received by Ride Secretary pre-ride, will be marked front and back with yellow ribbons Carry a hoof pick with you during the ride. Directions From Washington, D.C. and No. VA Take Route 66 west to Exit 23 (Rt. 17 NORTH), Delaplane exit. Go approximately 7 miles north. Entrance to Sky Meadows Bridle Trail is on your right. From Route 50 Route 50 intersects Route 17 approximately 12 miles west of Middleburg, or 20 miles east of Winchester. At the intersection of Route 50 and Route 17. Go approximately 1 mile south to Sky Meadows Bridle Trail entrance on your left.
