2008-09 SEASON RECAP 2008-09 ROSTER Spiders Capture Eighth Title During Record-Breaking Season The Richmond women s swimming & diving team continued its dominance of the Atlantic 10 Conference during a record-setting 2008-09 season, as head coach Matt Barany and his team captured its eighth-consecutive conference championship. The Spiders became just the fourth team in any sport in A-10 history to win eight or more titles in succession, and their current string of eight-straight championships is the longest of any sport in the conference. With team success comes individual accomplishments -- and the Spiders had plenty to brag about. Richmond swimming & diving established a staggering 19 school records in eight different events, while shattering nine A-10 Championship records. Senior Lauren Beaudreau left her lasting mark on the Spider program by setting school records in three individual events and four relays during one of the most dominating seasons in Atlantic 10 Conference history. The senior, who made her third NCAA Championship appearance this past season, set six conference swimming records en route to being named the A-10 Championship s Most Outstanding Performer for the second time in her career. Beaudreau s legacy, though, is not just confined to the pool. She graduated from Richmond as a three-time A-10 All-Academic performer and earned Academic All-America honors in 2008-09. The criminal justice major was honored as the University of Richmond s Female Student-Athlete of the Year. As Beaudreau demonstrated, the Spiders athletic success has been mirrored by consistent excellence in the classroom. The team accumulated a combined GPA of 3.22 during the 2009 Spring semester, which was up from 3.15 during the 2008 Fall semester -- each of those team GPAs represent the highest on record for the sport at Richmond. The Spiders have been awarded the Academic All-America Team Award in each of the last two seasons. In preparation for their run to the Atlantic 10 title, the Spiders swam an aggressive schedule versus teams from power conferences such as the ACC, SEC, Big Ten and Big East. The slate also included meets against nationally-ranked Penn State, Maryland and victories over Miami (Fla.) and James Madison. In addition, Richmond competed in the inaugural College Conference Carnival, which featured Rutgers, along with Florida and North Carolina -- who were each ranked in the Top 25. Junior Alex Helland set two school records at the Carnival (100 and 200 back), Sieben won the 100 fly. Helland went on to establishing a conference record as the A-10 champion in the 100 back, then re-broke her own school record at the Terrapin Last Chance (53.92). Sophomore Nicole LePere edged Helland at the wall in the 200 back, to take the conference title and set A-10 and school records (1:58.00). Beaudreau finished her Richmond career in style, re-breaking her own school records in both the 200 IM (1:58.10) and the 400 IM (4:10.53) at the NCAA Championships. Richmond scored 742 points at the A-10 Championship to run away with the team s eighth-consecutive title. HEAD COACH MattBARANY Matt Barany has continued a long-established winning tradition at the University of Richmond, making the Spiders the premier women s swimming program in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Taking the reigns of the Richmond program in May 2005 after serving as the director of swimming at James Madison University, Barany has helped extend Richmond s streak to an unprecedented eight-consecutive A-10 Championship, which is a conference record for the sport. Under Barany s direction, the Spiders captured the 2009 A-10 Championship, while senior Lauren Beaudreau, who was honored as the University of Richmond s Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2009, reached the NCAA National Championships for the third time in her career. Beaudreau s appearance marked the sixth-straight season Richmond has advanced at least one swimmer to the NCAA Championships. In Barany s tenure at Richmond, he s coached three swimmers to the NCAA National Championships -- Beaudreau, Katie Sieben and Jessica Witt, two swimmers to the 2008 United States Olympic Trials -- Beaudreau and Sieben, while Witt competed in the U.S. Open Water National Championship. In addition, Witt was twice honored as an NCAA All-American. All of the athletic success has been mirrored by consistent excellence in the classroom. The Spiders accumulated a team GPA of 3.22 during the 2009 Spring semester, which was up from 3.15 during the 2008 Fall semester -- each of those team GPAs representing the highest on record for the sport at Richmond. The Spiders have been awarded the Academic All-America Team Award in each of the last two seasons. Individually, three Spiders have earned Academic All-America distinction -- Caitlin Geary (2007), Sieben (2008) and Beaudreau (2009), while the Spiders have eight selections on the A-10 Academic All-Conference team since 2005. ASSISTANT COACHES This past season, Richmond swimming & diving established 19 school records in eight events, running Barany s total to 48 school marks in 13 events since taking the helm. His team shattered nine A-10 Championship records in 2008-09, for a total of 27 conference standards in nine events in the past four seasons. A Midlothian, Va. native, Barany was a standout swimmer at James Madison and returned to Harrisonburg in July 2001 as the head men s swimming coach -- a position he held for the next three seasons. In his first year, he led the team to three school records and a second-place finish at the CAA Championships. Another second-place finish in 2003 was highlighted by a conference record in the 200 medley relay and five league titles. In 2004, the squad went 9-4 in dual meets and finished third at the CAA meet. The following season, Barany assumed the role of director of swimming & diving for the Dukes, coaching both the men and women s programs. He led the women to four school records and had one of his swimmers earn an NCAA B qualifying time in his first year with the program. While coaching the men, he mentored nine CAA Champions and seven school record-holders. Four new pool records were established during Barany s tenure. A decorated student-athlete who served as team captain during his senior season, Barany swam freestyle on teams that captured four-straight CAA Championships and ECAC titles (1992-95). He was a two-time recipient of the Steve Miller Award -- an annual team honor that recognizes athletes who best exemplify enthusiasm, energy, dedication and love for swimming. Barany graduated from JMU in 1995 with a B.A. in English. He earned a secondary education certificate in 1996 while serving as an assistant coach on the CAA Championship men s team. Barany later put his degree to work in the Peace Corps where he spent two years teaching English in rural Kenya. In 1999, Barany started the women s swimming program at Randolph-Macon College. During his final season (2001) at RMC, he earned Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Atlantic States Conference and Randolph Macon Coach of the Year honors. Diane MAIESE Diving Coach First Season College of New Jersey 98 Diane Maiese was introduced as the Spiders new diving coach in July 2008, joining head coach Matt Barany s staff after a successful five-year run in the same position at La Salle where she was named the A-10 Diving Coach of the Year five times. I am beyond thrilled to have this opportunity, said Maiese. The diving program enjoyed a great run during my time at La Salle and I m looking forward to making the same contribution to the championship-caliber program here at Richmond. Maiese coached both the men s and women s teams for the Explorers from 2002 to 2007, winning the Men s Diving Coach of the Year Award four times and the Women s Coach of the Year once. THE SENIORS LAST WILL & TESTAMENT Dear Spiders: We have spent the last four years (2005-2009) trying to find a place for ourselves on a team where the dynamic was constantly changing, as was the roster and our roles on that team. This team has become focused with a distinct road map for success; a team that no longer just exists, but thrives. We evolved from a team that was built on a system of hierarchy to a group that supports each other and is a seamless structure where every piece is necessary. Although we have experienced many noteworthy moments, these are the ones that stick out we reminisce on our time here at Richmond. We hope you honor these memories as current and future Spiders Everyone-Hang out with Katie in the training room every morning to say HI! Liz- Hang out with and befriend the foreign soccer players. Charlotte-Take care of the inflatable animals for all posterity. Kristina-Queen of Random Knowledge and Current Events. Chrissy-Aesthetician and Dermatologist for the team. Alexi-Body Art Extraordinaire. Natalie- Being asked to leave due to a fit. Nicole-Giving pump-up speeches at A-10s. Katie and Alex-Spending senior year spring break in Richmond. Elizabeth-Disgusting Jay and being asked to take a lap. Jill-Perfecting the art of the star jump and singing karaoke in Dhall. Mar-Asking Matt to write the sets on the board. Beth-Driving a car load to the pier after A.M. practice. Michelle-Organizing Sunday Night Movie, Haunted Houses, Gingerbread Houses, Easter Extravaganzas, and weekend excursions. Hannah-Sit in Dhall after Saturday practice for hours and getting asked to leave at closing time. Freshmen-The Joy of Thursday Afternoon s 40x50s, Soldier Saturdays, Pushing sleds, cars, etc, Lap of Lunges. Freshmen Breaststrokers-Explain sets when Mar asks, What are we doing? Freshmen-Take Paula Lessem, Joyce MacCallister, and Teddy Ritter. 28 We are now extracting our pieces from the puzzle and leaving gaps for others to fill with their own colors and shapes. We hope we helped create a team based on the values we learned and lived. Thank you Richmond. Sincerely, Lauren and Smani
