In response to requests from manufacturers, authorities, and consumers, for certification of the above subject products, with this Certification Inform CSA is pleased to announce the expansion of the Certification program for protective headgear. Certification will be based on evaluation to ASTM F2040-00. CSA has long been recognised as a world leader in the development of Standards and certification of protective headgear. This program will be added to the existing programs for industrial head protection, hockey helmets, motorcycle helmets, and other forms of head and facial protection. The scope, requirements and pertinent information regarding this program are outlined in the attached Appendix. Effective Date: Immediately Direction Manufacturers wishing to obtain CSA Certification of helmets used for recreational snow sports may make an application at any time. Applications should include the full company name, address, location of each factory and a reference CSA file number (if applicable). Upon receipt of the application, customers will be advised of the quantity and types of samples required for evaluation. APPENDIX INFORMATION SHEET ON CERTIFICATION PROGRAM FOR HELMETS USED IN RECREATIONAL SNOW SPORTS 1. Scope This program is expanded to cover: (a) (b) helmets intended to provide protection for heads in recreational snow sports (such as skiing, snowboarding and other alpine sports), and basic performance requirements for shock absorption and strength of the retention system of helmets for recreational snow sports. 2. Requirements ASTM F2040-00 Standard - Standard Specification for Helmet Used in Recreational Snow Sports. 3. Initial Factory Evaluation (IFE) An Initial Factory Evaluation (IFE) for each location, where the product is manufactured and the CSA Mark is to be applied, will be performed to determine that: (a) (b) there is the necessary test equipment to perform the required factory tests, the equipment is calibrated on a scheduled basis (where required) and personnel responsible for ensuring compliance with the CSA requirements at the factory location understand how to perform the tests; and there is a procedure in place to support the factory's capability for producing the Certified product consistently and in accordance with the certification report. 4. Certification Marking In addition to the marking required by the above standards, CSA Certified helmets will be marked with the CSA monogram with ASTM F2040 standard indicated below it. 5. Safety Information All CSA Certified helmets shall have a safety information label that contains statements similar to the following: "NOT FOR MOTOR VEHICLE USE"; "NO HELMET CAN PROTECT THE WEARER AGAINST ALL FORESEEABLE IMPACTS; HOWEVER, FOR MAXIMUM PROTECTION, THE HELMET MUST BE OF GOOD FIT AND ALL RETENTION STRAPS MUST BE SECURELY FASTENED AS PER THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS"; "THIS HELMET IS SO CONSTRUCTED THAT THE ENERGY OF AN IMPACT MAY BE ABSORBED THROUGH PARTIAL DESTRUCTION OF THE HELMET, THOUGH DAMAGE MAY NOT BE VISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE. IF IT SUFFERS SUCH AN IMPACT, IT SHOULD EITHER BE RETURNED TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR COMPETENT INSPECTION OR DESTROYED AND REPLACED"; "THIS HELMET CAN BE SERIOUSLY DAMAGED BY SOME COMMON SUBSTANCES WITHOUT VISIBLE DAMAGE. APPLY ONLY THE FOLLOWING: (MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED CLEANING AGENTS AND/OR PROCEDURES, PAINTS, ADHESIVES AND THE LIKE)" as appropriate. I:\WGM4\DOC_CTRL\INFORMS\P-S\SPORTSANDREC06\5\mc Page 5 of 5
