Efficiency Update We began accepting credit cards during the online registration process which now enables a member to totally complete a membership application without direct processing by Region staff. We do still have some individuals and clubs utilizing paper member forms and checks but it is slowly declining. We used Cvent.com to register for all our officials, coaches, and HP clinics. Went well but it is costly and still have some learning to do to better utilize it. However, USAV is currently testing their events component to the Online Registration system so if it becomes operational by the fall and will do what we need it to do, we may switch to that for our clinic registrations which could save us considerable money. C. Tournaments Inclement weather hit the Region hard this season for the first time in many years. Just about every age group had one tournament affected by weather and a couple divisions had two weekends cancelled (a makeup date was offered). The cancellations did affect our bottom line as those teams were offered credits or refunds. The older Platinum divisions are still seeing a lot of teams travel outside the region, so it is affecting the numbers at those tournaments. The Junior Advisory Board will be discussing a possible incentive to Platinum teams for playing in more regular season Region tournaments. We did offer a sixth division (Nickel) this season and it was needed and used due to the growth we had in the 16 s, 15 s and 14 s divisions. Carolina Region Board of Director Annual Meeting minutes May 2, 2010 Page 2

D. Regional Championship Results Adult Regional Championships were held before Hi Neighbor again this season but participation was still down. It was held on a Sunday this season due to court availabilities. One 2011 schedule option to be presented later is to have no other activities on the Adult Regional weekend so those players that are also Junior coaches can participate. The Junior Regional Championships were well attended and went well from all reports. E. Inter-Region/National Performances: ADULTS - We have three adult teams going to Phoenix to play in the 2010 US Open Volleyball Championships (International Jammers M AA; Vroom Women s A; and Whatever Works W BB). We also had three teams win their division at Hi Neighbor this season. Catch and Release won Men s B; Seriously? won Women s A; and Extreme Elevation won Women s B. JUNIORS Our teams are traveling all over the country now and finding success. It is very common now to look at the results of various Qualifiers and large inter-region events and see Carolina Region teams in the top 10. o We had two teams earn a Junior National Championships bid at Qualifiers. Triangle 18 Black finished second at the Hoosier Mid East Qualifier and earned a bid. CJV 15 Blaze finished second at the Big South Qualifier and earned a 15 American Bid [they later earned the Region s National bid at our Bid tournament]. F. Coaching Program (Kevin for Chuck McCracken): o We held thirteen IMPACT clinics in the Region this season (both Regionsponsored and club-sponsored). Many more coaches are taking advantage of the IMPACT webinars offered by USA Volleyball. o Carolina Storm is sponsoring a CAP Level I/II clinic on May 22 and 23 in Concord. G. Officials Program (Marilyn Thompson): o USAV developed an online clinic this year which Chuck modified for our use with online testing. o We had 516 people complete the online referee clinic (359 last year). o We had 503 people complete the online scorekeeper clinic (384 last year). o We certified 4380 referees through online and in-person clinics this season. o We certified 4400 scorekeepers through the online and in-person clinics. H. High Performance Program (Sheila Holloway) o Training Locations o Charlotte o Hendersonville o Greenville o Hickory o Fayetteville o Greensboro o Colleges involved this year o UNC-Charlotte o Meredith College o East Carolina University o UNC-Greensboro (possible for summer camp) o Greensboro College (possible for summer camp) Carolina Region Board of Director Annual Meeting minutes May 2, 2010 Page 3

o Catawba Community College (next year) o Western Carolina University (next year) o Changes in structure of training o Formal Evaluations (October-MS, Nov & Dec HS) o Informal Evaluations (Group Assignments are Jan-Apr) o Position clinics (broken down by age) o Reach Out (send coaches to club or school, 20 or more; 10:1 ratio) o Leave room in the schedule for HP Tryouts to beat deadline for Nationals deadline o Have a Boys Regional Championships (14-15, 16-18) o Coach Development o Had 11 club coaches attend clinics and start to get involved o During Reach Out Events (we will require 1:1 for their coaches to ours) o Send one additional coach to the HP Coaches Seminar o Scholarships o Region to cover one scholarship in each division (Select girls, Youth girls, and Select/Youth boys) to cover the costs of attending HP Championships Essay Required Letter from Club Director describing situation that justifies scholarship Letter from player and parents authorizing school counselor to confirm family situation (i.e. financial, hardship, etc.) o Out-of-Region Players o Training events- they are paying like everyone else o Tryouts and Camps o Team Eligibility Regions that don t have programs o USA Volleyball s policy I. Summary We had a very successful season despite the continuing effects of the struggling economy. We went into the season raising member dues in anticipation of the $10 increase by USA Volleyball next season. We did not hear one complaint about the increased dues in the office and it obviously had no effect on overall membership. We will be sanctioning the adult league in Charlotte again this summer and we continue to sanction outdoor events for WCVC and vh1vball which is giving us exposure to the outdoor game. We have purchased 10 outdoor net systems and will look for junior clubs willing to host some junior tournaments this summer. This will be a push for us in upcoming seasons to tap into new players and opportunities. We sponsored a sitting volleyball train the trainer clinic. It was small but we will also hope to incorporate the junior clubs in the future to promote this side of the sport. We continue to hear from various places around the state about possible future volleyball facilities (Hickory and Wilmington). As we continue to grow, these new facilities will be a key for us to continue to offer space for all teams that want to play in our tournaments. Overall, this was another successful season for Carolina Region Volleyball. Carolina Region Board of Director Annual Meeting minutes May 2, 2010 Page 4

B. National State of the Game Fred Wendelboe: USA Volleyball has hired a staff person to oversee the Beach Division. He was with the AVP and has extensive experience with the Beach game and the beach athletes. We will see what direction the organization goes with Beach now that he is hired. A question was asked when a decision might be made to add the additional Qualifiers that have been discussed in the past. Fred has not heard anything more on when they might be added. It does not appear that our part of the country would be a prime location to add another Qualifier but whether we have a facility large enough to host one would also be an issue. IV. Meritorious Service Awards: The Region can recognize up to five Individuals for outstanding service to volleyball in North Carolina. Individuals may only receive the award once under current regulations. The 2010 Carolina Region Meritorious Service Award winners are: A. Michael Hodge Michael is the founder of Jammers Volleyball Club. He has been a player and coach in the Region for many years, and has worked to improve the level of play in the Durham/Chapel Hill area. B. Brian Magee Brian is the founder of the Cary YMCA Boys Volleyball Club. He is a former Boys Player Rep to the Carolina Region Board of Directors. Even though his sons have aged out of Boys play, he is still running the Cary YMCA Boys club and has tirelessly promoted the boys game in North Carolina. C. Blaine Tendler Blaine has been involved with the Carolina Region High Performance Program for many years. He also coaches with the USA Volleyball HP Program. He is the club director for Piedmont Volleyball Club. Blaine has done a lot to raise the level of volleyball in North Carolina. D. Tad Watson Tad is a Junior National Official that has worked in the Region for many years as an official, clinician, and rater. He recently served as Treasurer of the Mid-Atlantic Volleyball Officials Board and was recognized by the PAVO for outstanding service to that organization. The Carolina Region is proud of our 2010 Meritorious Service Award winners and appreciates their service to volleyball in North Carolina. V. Old Business - none VI. New Business - none VII.
