The 2012 Bid Procedure The 2012 Bid Procedure followed the same two phase system that had first been introduced for 2008. For the first time, the duration and content of the preliminary information meeting between the Applicant Cities and the IOC Administration was expanded to cover four days. The content included presentations from IOC Directors and IOC experts. In addition, representatives of the Athens and Vancouver Organising Committees made presentations on their experiences of bidding for and hosting the Games. The 2012 Applicant and Candidate Cities were the first that were required to take into account the Games Study Commission s recommendations on reducing the size, cost and complexity of organising the Games that had been adopted during the 2003 IOC Session in Prague. End August 2003 Deadline for payment of the USD 150,000 nonrefundable Candidature Acceptance Fee to the IOC. 7 to 10 October 2003 An IOC information seminar was held for the Applicant Cities. October 2003 to 15 January 2004 During this period the Applicant Cities were required to prepare their replies to the IOC Questionnaire. 15 January 2004 Deadline for the Applicant Cities submission of their replies to the Questionnaire. 15 January 2004 to March 2004 The Applicant Cities replies were examined by an IOC Candidature Acceptance Working Group. 18 May 2004 Presentation of the IOC Candidature Acceptance Working Group s Report to the IOC Executive Board. The Applicant City Phase ends with the Executive Board s acceptance of those Cities which will go forward into the Candidate City Phase. August 2004: Games of the XXVIII Olympiad Participation of the Candidate Cities in the Observer Programme organised by the IOC and the Athens Organizing Committee (ATHOC). 31 October to 3 November Candidate City representatives attend the Athens 2004 Debrief held in Beijing. 15 November 2004 Deadline for Candidate Cities to submit their Candidature File to the IOC. February to March 2005 During this period the 2012 Evaluation Commission made a four-day visit to each of the Candidate Cities. 6 June 2005 The Report of the IOC Evaluation Commission for the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012 was released. 6 July 2005 The Candidature phase draws to a close at the IOC Session in Prague with the final presentations of the Candidate Cities and the election of London as the 2012 Olympic Host City. The 117 th IOC Session, Singapore, 2005 THE CANDIDATE CITY PRESENTATIONS The final step for each 2012 Candidate City was to make a presentation to the 117 th IOC Session on 6 July 2005 in Singapore. Each presentation was a maximum of 45 minutes with each presenting delegation comprising six official delegates, four advisors and the IOC Members in the country. THE REPORT OF THE 2012 EVALUATION COMMISSION Following the presentations by the Candidate Cities, and before the vote took place, the 2012 Evaluation Commission presented its Report to the Session. THE VOTE As stated above, the vote to select the Host City for the Games of the XXX Olympiad was carried out on 6 July 2005 by secret ballot. As per the voting regulations, only those IOC members who were not nationals of countries for which there was a candidate city in a round were permitted to vote. The result of the vote was as follows, with London elected as the Host City in the fourth round.
