Welcome to the Eastern Pacific Expansion for Surface Battle Group v3.0. This expansion includes Her Majesty s Royal Australian Navy (HMRAN), the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF), the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) and the Korean People s Army Navy (KPAN). The recent belligerency of the KPAN accelerated the release of this expansion by about a month. Contained within is the information you need to explore the options, actions and ramifications of a true global hot spot. YOU MUST HAVE THE CORE RULES Surface Battle Group v3.0 IN ORDER TO USE THIS EXPANSION. It is also highly recommended that you have The Chinese Expansion if you wish to include support by China (PRC) for North Korea (KPAN) in any scenarios. Included are 34 more ship forms for the combat vessel classes most likely to be involved in a confrontation. Also added are the Su-22, Su25, F-16, a special F-15 configuration, and my best guess for the F-35 for near future scenarios. The data for the MiG-29 s and other F-15 s are in the core rules. Of particular interest is the Hyuga class DDH of the JMSDF. Since WW2, Japan has not been allowed by treaty, to have aircraft carriers. At only 14,000 tons the Hyuga is NOT the Nimitz class. But it does have the capability to hold up to two dozen ASW helicopters or ten Chinook sized helos, or sixteen VSTOL jets. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck well this duck is, in reality, a CVH. The VLS system on the Hyuga provides ample capability for self-defense. Equally interesting are the midget subs used by North Korea. They are capable of launching two wake homing torpedoes and hiding before the torpedoes hit their target. There is no doubt about their role in a sneak attack. Both Japan and Australia have upgraded their fleets and will continue to do so. The information inside is as up to date as I could find. The Japanese, Australian and South Korean data is generally 2006 or newer. Some of the North Korean data is the best I could get and obviously should be taken with a grain of salt. Here s to good gaming! T. Dziegielewski 2

Scenario #1: Like Thieves in the Night. Three North Korean Sang-O minisubs are attempting to land 3 squads of Special Forces (1 per minisub) in South Korean territory just below the 38 th parallel. Two ROKN Sohn Wonyil subs are all that there is to possibly intercept the Sang-O s. But are they near enough? No Nukes. The board is 6 feet long by 4 feet wide. Victory conditions: Highest point total wins; ties are possible. South Koreans get 5 points for every Sang-O sunk before landing its special forces squad. South Koreans get 1 point for every Sang-O sunk after landing its special forces squad. North Koreans get 4 points for every squad they land. The minisub must surface at the edge of the board in the 6 inch landing zone AND remain stationary while offloading their squad. If the minisub is sunk while stationary, the special forces squad is destroyed. North Koreans get 1 point for every Sang-O that escapes off the left edge of the board North Koreans get 10 points for every Sohn Wonyil sub that is sunk. 3

Scenario #2: The Alpha Male Test Small groups from both countries encounter each other along the 38 th parallel. No Nukes. North Korean Forces 2 Ming class SS, 1 Soho Class FF, 1 Najin Class FFL, 2 Sariwon CT South Korean Forces 1 Pohang CT {surface configuration}, 1 Pohang CT {ASW configuration}, 2 Ulsan FF {any configuration}, 1 Jangbogo SS, 1 Sohn Wonyil SS Victory conditions: The conditions apply to both sides. To win you must sink twice as many enemy ships as you lose. Any other result is a draw. 4

Scenario #3: Where Does an 800 Pound Gorilla Sleep? The North Koreans attack the Sejong when it has the least support. No Nukes. South Korean Forces 1 Sejong DDG, 1 Pohang CT {surface configuration}, 1 Jangbogo SS North Korean Forces 1 Soho FF, 1 Najin FFL, 2 Sariwon CT, 3 Ming SS, 1 Whiskey SS, 2 Soju PTG, 2 Huanfeng PTG, 2 Sin Hung PT Victory conditions: 1. North Korea wins if the Sejong is sunk. 2. If the Sejong is not sunk, the side that does the most hull points of damage wins. For subs count the surfaced value of hull points. 5

Scenario #4: Escalation; the gloves come off. Both sides attempt to deliver a devastating blow to the opposition. No nukes. South Korean Forces 2 Chungmunggong DDG, 3 Ulsan FF {late configuration}, 2 Pohang CT {surface config.}, 2 Pohang CT {ASW config.}, 2 Tonghae CT, 2 Jangbogo SS, 2 F-15 strike aircraft, 2 F-16 air superiority fighters North Korean Forces 4 Ming SS, 1 Soho FF, 1 Najin FFL, 6 Soju PTG, 6 Komar PTG, 2 Osa PTG, 6 Sun Hung PT 4 Su-25 strike aircraft, 4 MiG-29 air superiority fighters Victory conditions: The side that sinks 50% more hull points than has been sunk by the enemy is the winner. 6

Scenario #5: No quarter is asked and none is given. The North Koreans have upset the entire neighborhood. Japan and Australia have joined in to send a message to Pyongyang. Unfortunately for North Korea, promises of help from China have been unspecific about what help is coming. Pyongyang retains a belligerent posture and the shooting escalates. No Nukes. North Korean Forces 4 Ming SS, 2 Whiskey SS, 4 Sang-O mss, 1 Soho FF, 2 Najin FFL, 2 Sariwon CT, 6 Soju PTG, 6 Komar PTG, 2 Osa PTG, 10 Sin Hung PT, 4 MiG 29 air superiority, 4 Su-25 strike fighters (not the MiG-29 and Su-25 have average crews) Allied fleet- South Korean Forces 1 Chungmunggong DDG, 1 Kwanggaeto DDH, 2 Ulsan FF {any config.}, 2 Pohang CT {surface version}, 2 Pohang CT {ASW version}, 1 Jangbogo SS, 1 Sohn Wonyil SS, 4 F-16 air superiority, 4 F-15 strike fighters (note: the F-15 and F-16 have good crews) Japanese Forces 1 Asagiri DDG, 2 Abukuma DE, 1 Harushio SS Australian Forces 1 ANZAC FFH, 1 Adelaide FFG, 1 Hobart DDH, 1 Collins SS Victory conditions: This is a brawl. One side must drive the other from the map. If necessary, the last ship afloat and on the board wins. 7

Scenario #6: I am become death. (this scenario requires SBG3: The Chinese Expansion ) On the diplomatic front, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. In addition to the Japanese and Australians, the Chinese and the USN are now directly involved. Nuclear weapons are allowed in this scenario. Do not forget the electromagnetic pulse effects when nukes detonate. Communist Combined Fleet- Chinese Forces 1 Jin SSBN, 2 Han SSN, 1 Sovremenny DDG, 2 Luyang-I DDG, 2 Luyang-II DDG, 2 Luda-III DDG, 1 Luzhou DDG, 3 Jiangwei-II FFG North Korean Forces 4 Ming SS, 2 Whiskey SS, 4 Sang-O mss, 1 Soho FF, 2 Najin FFL, 2 Sariwon CT, 6 Soju PTG, 6 Komar PTG, 2 Osa PTG, 10 Sin Hung PT, 4 MiG 29 air superiority, 4 Su-25 strike fighters (not the MiG-29 and Su-25 have average crews) Allied Combined Fleet- USN Forces 2 Arleigh Burke DDG, 2 I-Los Angeles SSN, 1 Spruance DD, 1 Sea Wolf SSN, 2 Ticonderoga CG, 2 Virginia SSN (Note: USN ships with ASROC launchers may declare any ASROC not yet fired as a 20kt nuke.) South Korean Forces 1 Chungmunggong DDG, 1 Kwanggaeto DDH, 2 Ulsan FF {any config.}, 2 Pohang CT {surface version}, 2 Pohang CT {ASW version}, 1 Jangbogo SS, 1 Sohn Wonyil SS, 4 F-16 air superiority, 4 F-15 strike fighters (note: the F-15 and F-16 have good crews) Japanese Forces 1 Asagiri DDG, 2 Abukuma DE, 1 Harushio SS Australian Forces 1 ANZAC FFH, 1 Adelaide FFG, 1 Hobart DDH, 1 Collins SS Victory Conditions: (Only if NO NUKES are fired) Each side will keep a running total of the number of vessels (not aircraft) sunk. Also, Each side will keep a running total of the entire fleets hull points. The first side to lose more than half of their number of vessels AND more than half of the total fleet hull points loses. No one wins a nuclear exchange, you just survive. If one side is losing badly, that side may resort to using nukes if they still have them, just to avoid defeat. 8

For wake homing torpedoes, the first target acquisition roll is now considered to be that of the torpedo recognizing that it has encountered a wake. If this roll is failed the torpedo continues straight ahead. If the first roll is successful, the torpedo turns towards what it believes is its target. The second die roll is a 50% chance of turning the wrong way. A failed roll means that the torpedo is heading away from its intended target. If the fuel range allows it is entirely possible that the torpedo will lock on to something else; successful die rolls permitting.
