Howard was working on his campground, but we navigated the digging and had a good time. Steve was our solo caller on Friday as well our cuer, finding rounds for us to dance since Terry and Jamie were out of town. I hope they had a good vacation. There were other scheduling conflicts with HSRDC, so some were only there for Saturday, but we made up with enthusiasm. Gary Sanders was the caller Saturday. We made 3 squares so there were ample people on the floor. It was followed by 4 tables of Hand N Foot. Some are wondering the results of our vote for the new club dress. Marlene made the motion and after discussion, we voted to make the patchwork skirt with the 3 club colors, Red, White and Black. The common material will be our current Bandana print. Many of us have enough scraps from making that skirt to add to the new one. This will also allow us to wear our old skirt and still fit in. It was also decided to wear Red tops and petticoats. The men can wear red shirts. Hopefully, they will get a tie made for them. I ve written a go-by for the skirts which will follow in the newsletter. Our theme for Friday will be in memory of Elvis who passed away August 16, 1977. Steve has promised singing calls to commemorate the occasion. Terry will be back with new round dances that they collected on their travels to ICBDA and Roundalab. Don t forget casual attire is perfectly acceptable since it is still summer.. Page 2 HACS Newsletter August 2018 On Saturday, we are planning our traditional Ice Cream Dance in August. The weather will again be hot and the cool ice cream will be a pleasant treat. This means we all pitch in and bring either the ice cream (homemade or store-bought) and the toppings. We will also be welcoming back Brice and Debbie for that dance. Besides all the fun and card playing, please, come in for breakfast on Sunday. John has a hardy breakfast ready at 7:30 and we follow it with words of wisdom from Carol. A preview for September: our Saturday caller will be K.O. Jeanes. See you dancing, Janet Notes for making the patchwork skirt There is a website http://www.squaredancesewing.com/tiered_skirts/basic_calculations.html Which gives you all the precise measurements for making the skirt. I m a math major and it seems complicated to me. I was going to go by experience and this is how I m making mine. I m planning a 21-inch skirt, with 3 rows of squares and a ruffle on the bottom. Take your hip measurement and double it. That will be the radius for your first tier. The second one is 1 ½ times the previous layer and the third tier is 1 ½ times the second one. The ruffle is 1 ½ times the bottom tier. There will be 16 squares in the first tier, 24 in the second tier and 36 in the third tier. Then the ruffle will make up the rest of the 21-inch skirt. You may want to use 4 to 8 different fabrics so it won t look too Busy. This skirt can be made with as little as 2 ¼ yards. If I want 5x6 finished squares the raw (cut) square will be 6x7. There is a half inch seam allowance planned. I m choosing this because I bought some Fat Quarter from Walmart that start 18 x 21. To speed up the sewing, cut strips of fabric 6 inches wide {third of the short side}, place as many in order that you want to repeat, then sew the strips together. Next cut the strips into 7-inch strips, then sew these strips to make the tier. The waist band will be attached to the top of the first tier, so no gathering is necessary. The elastic for the waist band is 2 inches shorter than your actual measurement so it has tension on it. Tier 2 and 3 will need to have a gather at the top. The ruffle is also gathered. For those who don t want a ruffle, the three tiers can be a graduated length i.e. 6 then 7 then 8 which will make the 21 inches. This is just a start. I m sure there will be more discussion at when we get together to make them. Janet
HACS Newsletter August 2018 Page 3 Note from Marlene Friday 8/10 from 6 to 7pm & Saturday 8/11 from 11 to 2:30 p.m. (excluding lunch and meeting) -- I will help you figure the math for your skirt, make a shopping list and you will receive the address in Bellville for September's sewing bee. At that time I will have 2 cutting areas, 2 ironing areas, 2 serging areas, 2 sewing areas and 1 ruffling area. The machines will be set up with a choice of red or black thread.
