4-H Barbecue News! Page 2 July/August, 2016 4-H Barbecue and Live Auction New for 2016 - the 4-H Fund Raising Committee will be conducting a Live Auction at the Miami County 4-H Barbecue! Miami County 4-H Clubs are asked to please donate an item(s) to the auction. Looking for ideas? Consider donating, themed gift baskets, sports tickets, gift certificates, hand-crafted items, home and garden supplies, baked goods, etc. Due to the large number of allergies, if donating a baked good, please include the ingredients on a card with the food. Auction items may be dropped off 12:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. in the Poultry Barn (formerly the Jr. Fair Building) the day of the Barbecue. The auction will begin at 7:00 p.m. All clubs are required to participate at the barbecue, but not all members must be present. Organizational Advisors received details concerning the number of individuals needed at each station and additional information regarding the amount of beverages needed in their fundraiser packet mailed out last month. Beverages should be taken to your Chairperson by Thursday, July 21, or dropped off at the Poultry Barn, located at the south end of the Miami County Fairgrounds, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 21. Please remember to write the club name on the side of the beverage box. Proceeds from the annual Miami County 4-H Barbecue combined with 4-H member assessment fees fund: the purchase of project ribbons, rosettes, trophies, county medals, final year member awards and plaques, part of the Miami County Volunteer Banquet awards and decorations, older youth trips (i.e. Sea Camp), volunteer education (i.e. State Volunteer Conference attendees), 4-H promotional activities, Cloverbud and Jr. Camp camper scholarships, Cloverbud activities, School program materials, scholarships, club auditing, Food and Fashion Board activities, Project Pride Day drapes and judges meals, and 4-H newsletter postage. Page 3 July/August, 2016 Miami County Fair News 2016 Commodity Carnival CME Group and the National 4-H Council partnered to create the Commodity Carnival, a fun learning activity for youth to experience managing the business risks associated with producing and bringing livestock to market. The game aims to build greater literacy in agricultural science and economics at state and county fairs. The Commodity Carnival consists of three activities that guide participants through the process of producing and selling livestock: grow your livestock, sell your livestock and win a ribbon. This year, participants will grow and sell a hog. The Commodity Carnival will appear at nearly 120 state and county fairs throughout the Midwest during the summer and fall of 2016. Miami County was one of 10 counties selected to participate in this year s event. The activity will be offered on three days during the Miami County Fair. One day will be Kids Day, 10 am 1 pm, Monday, August 15. A grant is being offered to each county 4-H program that takes part in this event. Two teens are needed to help conduct the activities. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Demetria at 440-3943. Participants must complete the preregistration form in this newsletter and return it by Monday, August 1st. Topics are to be related only to information learned during Cloverbud Activities.
