The Gators won their first Southeastern Conference championship since 2000 and seventh in program history with a 38-28 defeat of Arkansas on Dec. 2. Florida finished the season with a 13-1 overall record and was 7-1 in Southeastern Conference Play. - Over the last 16 games, three teams nationally have won 15 games: Team Record Florida 15-1 Ohio State 15-1 Boise State 15-1 GATOR STORYLINES - In 2006, Florida celebrated 100 years of Gator football and the 10th anniversary of the school s first football national title in impressive fashion by winning the school s second national title by defeating Ohio State, 41-14, in the BCS National Championship Game. UF defeated Florida State, 52-20, in the Sugar Bowl to secure the 1996 championship. - Florida has now won back-to-back bowl games six times in school history and the first time since winning three-straight contests from 1996-98. SEason Notes - Florida finished the 2006 season with a 13-1 record, establishing a single-season school record for victories (UF was 12-1 in both 1995 and 1996). The Gators 22 victories over the last two seasons is tied for second in the nation for that time frame, behind only Southern California s 23 victories (Boise State and Texas also have 22 wins since 2005). - UF s 13 wins on the year tie them with five other schools for the SEC single-season record. - The Gators 2006 schedule was ranked as the toughest in the nation by the NCAA. Both of Florida s national titles have come in a year that saw them play the country s most challenging slate, as they also held that honor in 1996. The only other school to capture the national crown while playing the nation s toughest schedule was Colorado, which did so in 1990. - UF finished the season ranked first in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, marking the 17th-consecutive season that the Gators have been included in the final version of that ranking. That streak is the longest in the nation, followed by Texas 10-straight seasons. - Florida s win over Ohio State was its third-ever triumph over a top-ranked team in school history (vs. Florida State, 1/2/97, W, 52-20; vs. Florida State, 11/22/97, W, 32-29). - The Gators victory snapped Ohio State s 19-game winning streak, which was the longest in the nation entering the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. - Florida improved to 3-1 all-time in BCS bowl games (BCS rankings are used). 2006 SEASON REVIEW... - Florida made its 13th January bowl game appearance in the past 14 years, and the Tostitos BCS Championship Game marked the 17th January bowl game in school history. - Florida improved its record to 16-18 all-time in bowls, and to 6-3 in postseason contests against Big 10 members (Illinois, 1-0; Iowa, 2-1; Michigan, 0-1; Michigan State, 0-1; Ohio State, 1-0; Penn State, 2-0). - The Gators made their 16th-straight bowl appearance, extending their current school record. The mark is the longest active streak among SEC teams and represents the third-longest in the nation. - The 38-28 victory over No. 8 Arkansas at the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2 yielded the Gators first league title since 2000 and seventh in school history. The 38 points matched the second-most scored in the SEC title game, shy of the 45 the Orange and Blue scored against Alabama in 1996. - The Gators improved to 6-2 in the SEC Championship Game, having collected wins in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2006. UF won the 1991 SEC crown and the league s title game began in 1992. - Florida played an NCAA-most 11 teams that made it to bowl games in 2006. The next highest amount of bowl teams played was nine by Boston College, Maryland, Nebraska, Southern California, South Carolina and Stanford. (SEE PAGE 8 FOR CHART) - The 13 teams UF defeated finished the season with 17 combined wins against opponents which were ranked in the AP Top-25 poll at the time the game was played. - The Gators went 5-1 against ranked opponents, beating then-no. 13 Tennessee, No. 9 LSU, No. 25 Georgia, No. 8 Arkansas, and No. 1 Ohio State and losing at No. 11 Auburn. - Florida finished the regular season with an 11-1 record to become only the second team in school history (1995) to win 11 games prior to a conference title or bowl game. - Florida was the first team in the nation to clinch a spot in a conference championship game among teams in conferences that have one. With a win at Vanderbilt on Nov. 4 and a victory by LSU at Tennessee later that day, Florida clinched a spot in the SEC Championship game. - On Nov. 11, Florida defeated South Carolina to finish undefeated in the SEC East for the ninth time in school history. - Florida s 22-4 overall record over the last two years is tied for the best among all SEC teams (LSU, 22-4). Since 2005, UF has posted a 12-4 regular-season record in the SEC, the third-best in the league and tops in the SEC s Eastern Division. Florida / LSU 22-4 Auburn 20-5 - Florida closed its home schedule on Saturday, Nov. 18, with a 62-0 romp over Western Carolina to finish undefeated in The Swamp for the second-straight season. UF had not gone undefeated in back-to-back seasons in Gainesville since 1997-98. There are only three other teams in the country that finished the 2005 and 2006 seasons perfect at home (Boise State, Louisville and USC). Currently, the Gators own a 15-game winning streak in The Swamp, which is the third-longest run nationally. - With the win at Florida State on Nov. 25, UF has now taken seven-straight games against Tennessee, Georgia and FSU. It is the longest streak over those three teams in school history, topping the five-game skein established in the 1995-96 seasons. Urban Meyer is the only coach in school history to begin his career with six-straight wins over the trio. The conquest of FSU marked the first time that UF had ever defeated the Vols, Dogs and Seminoles in back-to-back seasons. - UF overcame 10-point deficits twice this season (at Tennessee and vs. Alabama). The last time UF came back from being down 10-or-more points twice in one season was 1995. During that season, the Gators trailed 23-7 and 30-14 vs. Tennessee (Sept. 16) before posting a 62-37 win. UF also spotted Auburn an early 10-0 lead (Oct. 14) before eventually winning the game, 49-38. - Florida saw an eight-game winning streak come to a close at Auburn on Oct. 14. The streak was the team s longest since the 1996 season and ranked third nationally at the time. With the victory over Ohio State in the BCS title game, the Gators finished the season riding a seven-game winning streak. - Twenty-seven total freshmen saw game action this year for the Gators. All but six offensive touchdowns UF scored this season contained at least one run of 12-or-more yards or a pass of 16-yards or more on the TD drive. - Forty-eight of Florida s 77 rushing plays of 10-or-more yards this season resulted from a quarterback or a wide receiver. - In 14 games this season, UF scored on its first drive seven times. In 2005, UF scored on its first drive three times all season. - The Tostitos BCS National Championship Game was the first time this season that Ohio State allowed two touchdowns in the first quarter of a contest. - Florida s 34 first-half points were the most by the Gators in an opening half against a ranked team last season. Ohio State entered the game allowing 10.4 per game, but gave up three times that amount to Florida in just two quarters of play. Florida scored on six of its seven firsthalf possessions after entering the game averaging 28.8 points per game for the year. - Florida passed for two touchdowns against Ohio State to bring its season total to 29. UF threw 20 touchdown passes in the 2005 season. - Florida totaled 388 yards against Florida State, which entered the game with the nation s No. 12 ranked defense, allowing just 269 yards a game. The 388 yards were the most given up by FSU last season. - Florida averaged 8.3 yards per rush against Western Carolina, marking the third game for the 2006 season that UF averaged 6.0-plus yards per carry (Kentucky, Auburn). 2006 SEASON REVIEW... - Under head coach Urban Meyer, the Gators have outrushed 23 of 26 opponents (10-of-12 in 2005 and 13-of-14 in 2006). - Against UCF, Florida totaled 637 yards of total offense (tied for the ninth-highest single-game total nationally in 2006). It marked the first time the Gators had gained 600-or-more yards in a game since posting 695 yards against Maryland in the 2002 Orange Bowl. Florida s 433 yards passing were its most since recording 410 against UAB on Aug. 31, 2002. - Florida finished with 582 yards of total offense vs. Western Carolina (28th-highest single-game total by any team this season). UF had one game in 2005 in which the offense produced 500-or-more yards. The Gators exceeded the 500-yard mark three times in 2006 (UCF, UK, WCU). QUARTERBACKs Leak Among national leaders in touchdown passes - Chris Leak threw 23 touchdown passes last season. The total tied for the 20th-highest amount nationally. - Chris Leak s 23 touchdown were three more than he threw last season. In records dating back to 1955, he threw for more or matched the UF leader in passing touchdowns from 44 of 50 years. Tebow among National Leaders In Yards Per carry - Tim Tebow ran the ball 89 times for 469 yards last season. His 5.3 average yards per carry tied was the 55th highest nationally among all players and was the second-highest total nationally among quarterbacks: Quarterback Rushing Avg. 1. Chris Nickson (Vanderbilt) 4.8 - Tim Tebow led the Gators with eight rushing touchdowns last season, which tied for seventh among all quarterbacks nationally. Tebow was one of four quarterbacks nationally to have three rushing touchdowns against AP Top-25 teams last season. His efforts tied Florida s all-time single season rushing touchdowns by quarterbacks record (Jimmy Fisher, eight, 1976). - Chris Leak opened the BCS National Championship game going 9-of-9 for 99 yards and a touchdown before throwing an incompletion. - In the SEC Championship Game against Arkansas, Chris Leak passed for 189 yards to become Florida s all-time career leader in passing yards with 11,000. He added another 213 yards against Ohio State to finish his career with 11,213 passing yards (SEE PAGE 18 FOR CHART). - With 283 passing yards against Florida State, Chris Leak recorded his 32nd career game of 200- or-more passing yards. The effort gave him the all-time Florida record for 200-yard passing games (31, Danny Wuerffel). Leak added another 200-yard passing game against Ohio State to finish his career with a total of 33. - With the win at Florida State, Chris Leak became the only starting quarterback in school history to win in Knoxville, against Georgia (three times), in Tallahassee (twice), in Baton Rouge and win a bowl game. Leak also joined Kerwin Bell as the only Gator starting quarterbacks to win at FSU twice in their careers. - Chris Leak helped lead the Gators on four fourth-quarter drives to secure the victory in 2006: Opponent Plays Yards Time Highlights at Tennessee 8 65 4:13 Leak passed to Baker for 21-yard TD. Since Leak s arrival in Gainesville, the three wins are more than all but one team (Auburn) have had over Georgia. 2006 Team Records The Offense With a 15-of-26 night through the air against Kentucky on Sept. 23, senior quarterback Chris Leak took over the top spot on Florida s career completions and pass attempts lists, both of which were previously held by Shane Matthews (1990-92). Leak finished his career with school records of 895 completions and 1,458 attempts. Senior quarterback Chris Leak produced 273 yards of total offense (254 pass, 19 rush) against South Carolina on Nov. 11, breaking former UF standout Danny Wuerffel s (1993-96) school record for total offense. Leak closed his Gator tenure with 11,350 total yards, surpassing Wuerffel s mark of 10,500. Senior quarterback Chris Leak moved into first place on the school s all-time career passing yards chart in Florida s SEC Championship Game victory over Arkansas, reaching the milestone on a 37-yard scoring strike to freshman wide receiver Percy Harvin. Leak capped his time in the Orange and Blue with 11,213 yards through the air. Senior quarterback Chris Leak finished his collegiate career with a school-record 33 200-yard passing games to his credit the final one coming in his 213-yard performance against Ohio State in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. Freshman quarterback Tim Tebow rammed his way into the endzone from one yard out in the fourth quarter of the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game for his eighth rushing touchdown of the year. That total matched the single-season school record set by Jimmy Fisher in 1979. The Defense The Gators yielded only 59 yards of total offense to Western Carolina on Nov. 18, marking the lowest opponent output in school history. UF also allowed only four first downs in the contest the fewest amount in records dating back to 1981. Special Teams Freshman kick returner/running back Brandon James set a school single-game record with 155 punt return yards against Western Carolina on Nov. 18, highlighted by a 77-yard touchdown return. James effort was the ninth-highest single-game total in SEC history, and the second-best single-game total by a freshman in league annals. Florida blocked eight kicks in the 2006 season, establishing a new school record and bettering a mark that was established 11 years ago. UF running backs averaged 3.9 yards per carry on 279 runs and lost just one fumble in 2005. - DeShawn Wynn s two-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter vs. Ohio State was the 25th of his career, which tied Buford Long (1950-52) for the sixth-most in Florida history. - DeShawn Wynn returned to the starting running back position for Florida at Auburn. Wynn missed all but one snap against LSU due to a twisted knee suffered in the Alabama game. - DeShawn Wynn rushed for 104 yards on 14 carries against Kentucky, giving him back-to-back games with 100-yards rushing for the first time in his career. Prior to the game, Wynn averaged just 56.0 yards following his previous 100-yard performances during his career. - DeShawn Wynn carried the ball 22 times for 104 yards at Tennessee. The effort was the fourth 100-yard performance in Wynn s career. Wynn was the first 100-yard rusher against Tennessee since Carnell Williams (Auburn) ran for 100 in the 2004 SEC title game. - For the first time since 2002, the Gators returned their leading rusher from the previous season, as DeShawn Wynn returned to the squad after running for 621 yards on 130 attempts in 2005. Wynn scored seven of the 10 touchdowns by a UF running back in 2005 and has scored five of the seven by UF running backs this year. - The Florida running back unit returned only one upperclassman running back who carried the ball the previous season for the second time in three years (DeShawn Wynn). - In 2005, the Gators started four different running backs (Markus Manson, Kestahn Moore, Skyler Thornton, DeShawn Wynn). Wynn got the majority of the starts at running back with six, while Moore started three and Manson started two. - DeShawn Wynn became only the second running back since 1996 to lead the Gators in rushing yards in back-to-back seasons (Earnest Graham, 2002-03). DeShawn Wynn led Florida with 621 yards in 2005 and with 699 yards on 143 carries in 2006 (4.9 avg.). - The most rushing yards by an Urban Meyer running back in a season is 976 (on 237 carries) by Utah s Brandon Warfield in 2003. The running backs that return from 2005 (Wynn, Manson, Moore) combined for 1,263 yards on 259 carries. - The Gators ground game averaged 146.8 yards per game in 2005 and ranked fifth in the SEC. The total was the second-highest since the 1996 season (2004, 155.8). The unit also averaged 3.9 yards per carry, which was the highest amount by a first-year offense under Coach Meyer. In addition, UF ran for 19 touchdowns in 2005, equaling the total from Meyer s first offense at Bowling Green (2002). WIDE RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS - In the final three games, Percy Harvin accumulated 213 rushing yards on 15 carries (14.2 yards per carry) and had three touchdown runs (41, 67 & 4 yards). He became the first freshman since 2003 (LSU s Justin Vincent) to be chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the SEC Championship Game. - With a five-yard pass completion to Tate Casey in the fourth quarter of the SEC Championship Game against Arkansas, Andre Caldwell became one of 11 players in the nation to pass, receive and run for a touchdown last season. - Over the last five games, tight end Cornelius Ingram had 21 catches for 259 yards. Entering the South Carolina game on Nov. 11, he had one reception on the season. - In the Ohio State game, Dallas Baker caught his 10th touchdown of the season. Baker s total of 10 touchdowns was equal to or better than 24 entire teams in Division I-A. Baker s 10 receiving TDs tied for 20th best nationally in 2006 and also tied him for the ninth-highest single-season total in Gator history. He also had a 21-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter at Tennessee. - Andre Caldwell totaled a career-high 124 yards receiving and matched a personal-best with eight catches at Florida State. It was the first time he went for over 100 yards in his career. Caldwell also had a 66-yard touchdown reception, which was the longest by any Gator this season. - Riley Cooper had a career day against Western Carolina, as he matched the UF freshman singlegame receiving touchdown record with three (Jabar Gaffney did so in two different games in 2000). - Andre Caldwell s touchdown reception against Georgia was his fourth of the season. He entered the season with three for his career. Caldwell equaled his career-high with eight receptions and had a then-season-high 88 yards receiving. He carried the ball a career-high five times and totaled 28 yards against the Bulldogs. Caldwell had 13 total touches for 116 yards. - Against Southern Miss, Percy Harvin became the first true freshman wide receiver in school history to start a season opener. - Dallas Baker returned to the squad after an Outback Bowl MVP performance in which he set career highs in catches (10) and yardage (147). Baker is the fifth player in school history to be named the MVP of a bowl game the Gators won and return to the squad for the next season (Larry Smith, Emmitt Smith, Travis Taylor, Taylor Jacobs). Also under his guidance, UF s Chad Jackson set a school record with 88 receptions in 2005 and Utah s Paris Warren had a school-record 80 receptions in 2004. OffensivE LINE - The starting offensive line of LG Jim Tartt, LT Phil Trautwein; C Steve Rissler; RG Drew Miller; RT Carlton Medder started every game in 2006 except Vanderbilt, which Tartt missed due to an ankle injury. - The Florida offensive line allowed just one sack against Florida State, the second-lowest total by a Seminole defense last year. - The Florida offensive line allowed only 23 sacks last year. UF has given up only one or less sacks seven times last season after doing so on only three occasions in 2005. The UF offensive line gave up 35 sacks in 2005. - Against Auburn, UF s Jason Watkins made the first start of his career as he lined up at tight end. Watkins, who switched his number to 89 for the game against the Tigers, remained with that number in every game since that point. - Redshirt freshman Ronnie Wilson suffered a broken left ankle during practices in August. He underwent surgery on August 12 and returned to play for the LSU game. Wilson made his first career start against Vanderbilt by filling in for Jim Tartt (ankle) at left guard. - Only one player (Jim Tartt) on the offensive line entered the 2006 season with a start at their current position. In research dating back to 1982, there have been no two members of Florida s starting offensive line during a season from the same high school. - Four members of the starting offensive line for the season opener were from the state of Florida. In the last 11 seasons, four members of the starting day offensive line have been from the state of Florida on seven occasions. McFadden entered the game leading the SEC and ranked ninth nationally with an average of 118.5 yards per outing. - Florida held opponents to 100-or-less rushing yards in 10 of 14 games during the season. - Florida s three interceptions against Arkansas matched a season-high and marked the team s seventh multi-interception game of the year, as well as Florida s fourth three-interception game of the 2006 season. - Against Western Carolina, UF allowed a school-record 59 yards in total offense. The previous low was 66 vs. Tulane in 1961. - The Gators allowed only four first downs against Western Carolina, marking the fewest in records dating back to 1981. - Florida shut out its second opponent of the season with a 62-0 blanking of Western Carolina. The last time the Gators whitewashed two teams in the same season was 1991. - Over the final seven games, UF opponents went 19-of-75 on third-down conversions (.253). UF limited Ohio State to just 1-for-9 on third-downs in the BCS National Championship game. - The Florida defense surrendered just 18 touchdowns all year (2nd nationally ). Florida tied for sixth nationally with eight rushing touchdowns allowed this season and tied for eighth with 10 passing touchdowns allowed. In addition, the unit allowed one or less fourth-quarter touchdowns in 13 of 14 games last season. - Florida opponents scored 23 touchdowns against the Gators last season. Five of those have come on returns (one kickoff return, one punt block, two fumbles and one interception). Six of the 23 touchdowns have come following turnovers. The UF defense has given up only 13 touchdowns on the season when not taking the field following a turnover. - In the Georgia game, Florida limited the Bulldogs to 64 rushing yards. The Gators have held opponents under 100 yards net rushing in 19 of the last 24 wins dating back to the 2004 season. - In the last 50 games, the Gators have scored points off turnovers in 35 games. 109 of UF s points in 2005 came off turnovers (31.7 percent). - The Gators ranked third nationally in turnover margin in 2005, while Urban Meyer-coached teams rank second nationally during the last six years in turnover margin (+72) after forcing 178 turnovers and committing just 15 in 73 games. LINEBACKERS - Earl Everett led the team with 85 tackles to become the fifth player in school history to lead the Gators in tackles in back-to-back seasons and the first since 1991-92 (Wilber Marshall, 1981-82; Alonzo Johnson, 1984-85; Pat Moorer, 1988-89; Carlton Miles, 1991-92). Please note that no tackle stats were kept or are available prior to 1973. - Brandon Siler had 3.0 sacks, that amount tied for fourth on the team and first among members of the team not on the defensive line. - Brandon Siler and Earl Everett returned after leading the team in tackles in each of the past two years. Siler became the second true freshman in school history to do so when he totaled 77 in 2004, and Everett led the squad with 72 in 2005. The last time UF returned two players that led the squad in tackles in previous seasons was 2001 when Marquand Manuel (118, 1999) and Todd Johnson (102, 2000) were on the roster. - Freshman A.J. Jones and sophomore Jon Demps suffered injuries that affected the depth at the position. Demps suffered an ACL tear in his left knee in preseason drills, while Jones suffered a fracture in his right foot on Monday, Aug. 28. Both injuries occurred during non-contact drills. DEFENSIVE LINE - Sophomore defensive end Derrick Harvey tallied three sacks in the BCS National Championship Game, running his season total to a team-leading 11. That sack output tied for the fifth-highest single-season total in school history, as well as the third-best season by a defensive lineman in the UF record books. The mark also ranked second in the SEC and 18th nationally. - The Florida defensive line accounted for five of UF s six tackles for loss at Florida State. - Against Arkansas, Florida opened the game with Steven Harris and Jarvis Moss at defensive ends and Ray McDonald and Joe Cohen at defensive tackles. It was the second time UF opened with the four on the line and the seventh different arrangement the Gators used last season to open a game. - Against Georgia, Ray McDonald scored the first touchdown of his career on any level as he recovered a Georgia fumble and returned it nine yards for the score on the Bulldogs opening drive of the second half. - UF s defensive line accounted for 19.5 of the 33 sacks the team had in 2005. Returning members to the 2006 team combined for 16 of those. SECONDARY Smith and Nelson Top Combination in the country - Ryan Smith and Reggie Nelson combined for more interceptions (14) than any other duo in the nation. Smith and Nelson lead the Orange and Blue with eight and six interceptions last season, respectively. Smith s total was seventh nationally and led the SEC, while Nelson s haul was 23rd in the country and fifth in the league. - Ryan Smith made his first interception at Florida on Sept. 30 in the Alabama game and he went on to collect eight total including that day. The effort was the highest amount in the nation over that span for any player (no other player has more than six). - The Gator secondary did not allowed a receiving touchdown in seven different games last year (UCF, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, Western Carolina and Ohio State). - UF has had an interception in 26 of the past 38 games. In 2006, Florida led the SEC with 21 interceptions. UF s 16 interceptions in 2005 tied with Georgia for the highest amount by any SEC team. - The Gators were one of eight teams nationally and the only team in the SEC to intercept 20-or-more passes this season. Georgia 29 CElebrating 100 years - The 2006 season marked the 100th of Florida football. Through the previous 99 seasons, UF won one national title (1996) and six Southeastern Conference Championships (1991, 93, 94, 95, 96, 2000). The Gators have produced 57 first-team All-Americans, two Heisman Trophy winners (Steve Spurrier, 1966; Danny Wuerffel, 1996) and two members of the Academic All-America Hall of Fame (Carlos Alvarez, 1989; Cris Collinsworth, 2001). - The Gators are the first Division I-A team in the state of Florida to play for 100 years. UF is the final team in the SEC to do so and the 86th team in NCAA Division I-A to have had its first season 100-or-more years ago. No other school in the nation celebrated its 100th year of football in 2006. Game-by-Game : - The season-long celebration of 100 years was highlighted by several recognitions at UF games this season: vs. Southern Miss, Sept. 2 - Prior to the game, Florida recognized the 1996 national championship team with an on-field presentation. That season, UF posted a 12-1 record and defeated then-no. 3 Florida State on Jan. 2, 1997, in the Sugar Bowl, 52-20, to claim the consensus 1996 national championship. vs. Alabama, Sept. 30 - A special pre-game ceremony was held honoring four Gator football legends. The names of Gator legends Emmitt Smith, Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel and Jack Youngblood were unveiled on the Florida Football Ring of Honor. The announcement of the Ring of Honor was made the night before at the Gator Gala at the Stephen C. O Connell Center. Nearly 1,100 members of the Gator Nation celebrated 100 years of Florida football at the event, where it was announced that $6.1 million has been raised for the UF Athletic Endowment Fund from proceeds of the gala and other projects surrounding the centennial celebration. Additionally, UF players wore throwback uniforms for the game. The jersey was from the 1966 season and the helmets were from 1967. vs. Western Carolina, Nov. 18 - As part of the University of Florida s celebration of 100 Years of Florida Football, Gator football fans were encouraged to cast their votes for the greatest players in UF history. Fans had been voting since August, helping compile the Gator Fans All-Century Team presented by Gatorade. The two-week total matched UF s entire effort from 2005 and was as good or better than the total from 18 years in school records kept back to 1986. - Special teams played key roles in victories during each of the rivalry games in 2005, as well as the Outback Bowl. *Forced a fumble on a punt in the crucial meeting with Tennessee *Blocked a 37-yard field goal against the Vols, a 16-7 triumph in The Swamp *Blocked a 44-yard field goal attempt that was returned for a TD in the 34-7 win over Florida State *Executed a fake punt against Georgia game that picked up 20 yards and helped the Gators to a 14-10 victory *Blocked a punt for a touchdown and had a successful fake punt in the 31-24 win over Iowa SPECIAL TEAMS - With a blocked punt in the SEC Championship game against Arkansas, UF brought its total in 2006 up to eight to establish a school record for blocks in the regular season. Although bowl stats did not count in 1995, UF blocked two extra points against Nebraska for nine in all in 1995. - The Orange and Blue blocked three kicks during the 17-16 win over South Carolina, highlighted by a field-goal block on the final play of the game by Jarvis Moss, and the deciding margin was the result of a blocked extra point. - In 2006, the Gators have allowed 19 punts to be returned for 71 yards. The Florida punt return defense ranked seventh nationally. In 2005, Florida s special teams ranked ninth nationally in net punting (38.1 per punt), while the Gators punt return defense was the second-best nationally, allowing 3.3 per return. - Florida s 171 yards in punt returns against Western Carolina were the most by a Gator team since UF had 184 against San Jose State in 2003. - Brandon James set a school record with 155 yards in punt returns against Western Carolina. His 155 yards were the ninth-highest in SEC history and the second-highest by a freshman in the league (Norman Jefferson, LSU, 169, 1983). - Brandon James 77-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Western Carolina game was the first by a UF player since Nov. 11, 2000 (Lito Sheppard, 57-yards, vs. South Carolina). James is only the second freshman in school history to return a punt for a touchdown (Hal Griffin returned three for touchdowns in 1946). - In the SEC Championship game against Arkansas, Florida executed the fourth fake punt of the Urban Meyer era when Jemalle Cornelius rushed over the left end for 17 yards on fourth and 10 from the Florida 15 in the third quarter. In 2005, Florida converted fake punts against Alabama, Georgia and Iowa in the Outback Bowl. Under Coach Meyer, each of Florida s four fake punts have gone for a first down. - Senior kicker Chris Hetland s 42-yard field goal in the second quarter against Ohio State was his longest of the season. TURNING POINTS IN FLORIDA S 13 VICTORIES vs. Southern Miss: Senior running back DeShawn Wynn s three-yard touchdown run with 6:02 left to play in the first half gave the Gators a 14-7 lead and spurred them to a 34-7 victory. vs. UCF: Freshman wide receiver Percy Harvin caught an eight-yard slant from senior quarterback Chris Leak and ran the remaining 50 yards for a touchdown on Florida s opening drive to open the scoring in UF s 42-0 shutout of the Golden Knights. at Tennessee: Senior wide receiver Dallas Baker hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Chris Leak with 6:30 left on the clock to give the Gators a 21-20 win over the Volunteers. vs. Kentucky: With the Gators hanging on to a five-point lead midway through the third quarter, sophomore running back Kestahn Moore charged into the endzone from four yards out, widening Florida s advantage to 19-7 in a game that it would win by a score of 26-7. vs. Alabama: Leading by just eight points late in the fourth quarter and in the midst of an Alabama drive, junior free safety Reggie Nelson intercepted Crimson Tide quarterback John Parker Wilson and ran 70 yards for the game-sealing touchdown. vs. LSU: On the opening kickoff of the second half, freshman wide receiver Riley Cooper jarred the ball loose from LSU returner Early Doucet at the Tigers three-yard line, and senior cornerback Jermaine McCollum pounced on LSU s Trindon Holliday in the endzone after the latter recovered the fumble, giving the Gators a 16-7 lead. vs. Georgia: Senior defensive lineman Ray McDonald recovered a Georgia fumble on the Bulldogs first play from scrimmage in the second half, taking it back nine yards for the eventual game-winning score in Florida s 21-14 win over UGA. at Vanderbilt: Senior running back DeShawn Wynn s 22-yard run set up senior quarterback Chris Leak s four-yard touchdown scamper that gave Florida a 22-6 lead over the Commodores in a game that it eventually won, 25-19. vs. South Carolina: Junior defensive end Jarvis Moss blocked the Gamecocks last-second 48-yard field-goal attempt to preserve Florida s 17-16 victory and the school s ninth-ever undefeated run through the SEC East; the block was Moss second of the evening and the Gators third of the contest. vs. Western Carolina: Senior running back DeShawn Wynn capped the Gators first offensive possession with a season-long 26-yard touchdown run to open the scoring for Florida in its 62-0 rout of the Catamounts. at Florida State: Senior wide receiver Dallas Baker s 25-yard touchdown reception broke a 14-14 tie with just over 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter of the Gators annual showdown with Florida State, propelling the Gators to their third-consecutive win in the series. vs. Arkansas: Trailing 21-17 late in the third quarter, freshman cornerback Wondy Pierre-Louis jumped on a muffed punt in Arkansas end zone for his first career touchdown, giving the Gators a 24-21 lead that they would not relinquish en route to capturing the seventh SEC title in school history. vs. Ohio State: Down 7-0 after allowing the opening kickoff to be returned for a touchdown, Chris Leak led Florida on a seven-play, 46-yard touchdown drive that ended with a 14-yard pass to Dallas Baker that sparked the Gators to score on their first three possessions of the game to go up 21-7 before going on to win 41-14 and claim the school s second national title. FLorida Ranks High In Recent Graduation Sucess Rates - Seven University of Florida athletic teams scored a perfect 100 percent Graduation Success Rate and the overall athletic program produced a 92 percent Graduation Success Rate in data released from the NCAA in late September. Fourteen of 16 Gator athletic programs turned in a rate above the national average and the overall athletic program was 15 points above the national average. The graduation success rate for football was 80 and the national average was 65. - Twelve of the 21 seniors on Florida s roster graduateed in December of 2006 (Chris Leak, Eric Nappy, Dallas Baker, Tremaine McCollum, Jermaine McCollum, Kenneth Tookes, Tim Higgins, Brian Crum, Steven Harris, Jemalle Cornelius, Reggie Lewis and DeShawn Wynn). - On Oct. 26, Chris Leak was named as a member of the 2006 National Scholar-Athlete Class as well as a finalist for the 2006 Draddy Trophy by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. The winner of the Draddy Award was announced at the 49th NFF Awards Dinner Dec. 5 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Two Florida players have won the Draddy Trophy since its inception in 1990, making Florida one of only four schools with multiple recipients. Brad Culpepper was UF s initial Draddy honoree in 1991, and former Gator great Danny Wuerffel garnered the honor in 1996. Leak, who graduated in December with a bachelor s degree in sociology, was selected as the 2006 Fall Graduating Oustanding Leader for all students on campus and will be honored at the graduation ceremony. REWARDING THE PRESENT - Each Monday during the season, Florida head football coach Urban Meyer announced the Champions and Players of the Game from the previous Saturday s contest. - Each quarter during the season, Meyer and his staff hosts a Champions Club dinner, honoring the players who meet rigorous on and off-the-field requirements and are thus regarded as Champions. CHampionship Theme - At the Monday team meeting on Oct. 16 following the loss at Auburn, Florida head coach Urban Meyer distributed a business card bearing an image of five rings four of Florida s SEC championships and its 1996 national title to the entire team; the back of each card bears a quote from 1996 Heisman Trophy winner and former UF quarterback Danny Wuerffel on the pride that comes with overcoming adversity and sticking together as a team. - During the summer of 2006, the Florida football staff put together a video of great championship moments, including victories by Muhammad Ali, the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, New England Patriots, and the Gator men s basketball team, as well as highlights from UF s history on the gridiron. Meyer showed this to the team on Aug. 17 following a speech by Billy Donovan in an effort to build appreciation for the hard work and success put forth by former generations of UF players. - In the week leading up to the SEC Championship Game, Meyer played several videos for the team that aired continuously on a loop throughout the facility that highlighted the great moments in Florida s SEC title-game history. - Meyer invited several former players, including 1996 national championship team captain James Bates, to visit and speak with the team. Other former players have included Alex Brown, Danny Wuerffel, Errict Rhett, Jack Youngblood, Emmitt Smith, Lawrence Wright, Donnie Young and Trace Armstrong. - Current Miami Heat star and former Gator, Udonis Haslem, spoke with the team after a preseason practice about overcoming adversity. Following a process that began in early August and lasted until the end of October, fans voted with mail-in ballots found at Gatorade displays in participating Publix stores as well as at www.gatorzone.com. A total of 26 players (12 on offense, 12 on defense and two specialists) earned the nod from the fans. Fans selected one player each for those positions traditionally played only one at a time (i.e. quarterback, punter and place-kicker) during normal game situations. The Gators start the year with three-straight home games for the second time in three years. - Ole Miss returns to the SEC portion of the schedule, with Florida making the trip to Oxford, Miss, on Sept. 22. The game will be the first on the road for the Gators in 2007 and the first in Oxford since the 2002 season. - For the first time since 1992, the Gators will not have an open week prior to the Georgia game. That year, UF defeated Louisville (31-17) in Gainesville the week before edging UGA, 26-24. The team - Entering the 2007 season, UF s leaders in each of the following departments are projected to return: tackles for loss, sacks, kickoff returns, punt returns and fumble recoveries. - The Gators should return six starters on offense and lose five, while the defense will return just two starters and lose nine. Florida should return a total of 19 players who made at least one start in 2006: 13 on offense and six on defense. - The expected returning rushers accounted for 19 of the 25 rushing plays of at least 20 yards in 2006. The expected returning receivers accounted for 21 of the 51 receptions of at least 20 yards including 11 of the last 15 plays of that length or more in 2006. the offense - Florida will have a new quarterback for the first time in since the 2003 season, when Chris Leak made his first start at Kentucky on Sept. 27. Leak made 47 consecutive starts. - The Florida offense is projected to lose its top rusher, but return the next six-best in the department, each of whom rushed for at least 100 yards in 2006 (Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin, Kestahn Moore, Jarred Fayson, Andre Caldwell, Mon Williams). - QB Tim Tebow will be the Gators top returning passer and rusher in 2007. He finished the 2006 season passing 22-for-33 with five touchdowns and just one interception while he rushed 89 times for 469 yards (5.3 avg.) and eight touchdowns. Tebow will also be the Gators leading returner in points scored, having put up 48 points in 2006 which ranked third on the team behind kicker Chris Hetland and wide receiver Dallas Baker. - The Florida offense will also lose its top receiver, but return three of its top five wideouts. Caldwell, Percy Harvin and Cornelius Ingram are all projected to return and combined those three hauled in 121 catches for 1,384 yards and nine touchdowns in 2006. - The offensive line is expected to return players who have combined for 65 career starts after combining for 18 entering the 2006 season. Three offensive linemen who started every game in 2006 will return (Drew Miller, Phil Trautwein, Carlton Medder) while Jim Tartt returns having started all but one game in 2006. the defense - The Gator defense will see the loss of 10 of its top-12 tacklers from 2006, including the top tackle leaders in linebackers Earl Everett and Brandon Siler. The defense will see the loss of four starting juniors who opted to leave school early. - The defensive players expected to return in 2007 have combined for a total of just 36 career starts. SS Tony Joiner leads the way with 15 career starts while FS Kyle Jackson has made 11 starts, but none in 2006. DE Derrick Harvey had made five starts including four of the last seven games in 2006. DT Javier Estopinan started two games in 2006 before missing a portion of the season due to injury. DT Clint McMillan and LBs Dustin Doe and Brandon Spikes have all made one start apiece. - Harvey will return as the team s leader from 2006 in tackles for loss (13.0), sacks (11.0) and fumble recoveries (three). McMillian and Lutrell Alford are the only other projected returners who have recorded a sack in their career, each with 1.0. - Joiner was third on the team in tackles in 2006 with 59 and will be the top returning tackler. Joiner will also be the only returning player who recorded an interception in 2006. - Eight freshmen (five true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen) saw action for the Gators in 2006 and should factor into the mix in 2007 (Markihe Anderson, Brandon Antwine, Doe, Darryl Gresham, Jr., Dorian Munroe, Wondy Pierre-Louis, Spikes, Ryan Stamper). Special Teams - Florida loses punter Eric Wilbur and placekicker Chris Hetland. Wilbur has handled the punting duties each of the last four years. No projected returning player has made a punt or field goal attempt in their career. UF is projected to return its kickoff specialist (Joey Ijjas), long snapper (James Smith), and kick returner (Brandon James). - James led the team in both kickoff returns and punt returns. He returned 21 kickoffs for 382 yards (18.2 avg.). In the punt return department, James 33 punts for 363 yards for a 11.0 average that ranked fifth in the SEC and 26th nationally. - Florida blocked a school-record eight kicks in 2006, however just one projected returning player recorded one of those blocks. The attendance for the Tennessee game on Sept. 17, 2005, of 90,716, established a school record.the previous school record stood at 90,707, set against Wyoming in the 2005 season opener on Sept. 3. The school record setting crowd as the largest to ever watch a football game in the state of Florida. The state has hosted 13 Super Bowls, two BCS national title games and have featured a team that went on to win at least a share of the national title in a bowl game 18 times. The attendance for the season opener (90,707) was the largest opening-day crowd in Florida history. The previous record was 90,011 against San Jose State in the 2003 opener. The Gators opened the 2004 season against Eastern Michigan in front of a crowd of 90,009. The attendance of Florida s game at Tennessee (109,061) on Sept. 18, 2004, was the largest ever to see a Gator team play. The attendance for the 2004 Florida-Georgia game was an AllTel Stadium record (84,753). The previous record of 84,433 was set at the Florida-Georgia game in 2002. FLORIDA & THE NFL... - The 2006 National Football League season began on Thursday, Sept. 7. All notes below reflect 2006 opening day totals and the 2006 NFL Draft. GATORS AND THE NFL DRAFT - Former Gator quarterback Rex Grossman s first-round selection by the Chicago Bears in 2003 marked the seventh-straight year and eighth time in the last 12 years that a Florida player had been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. UF s 26 first-round selections since 1983 are tied for the fifth-best total for a school in the nation over the time frame (1983-2006). Since the first NFL Draft in 1936, a Florida player has been selected in the first-round 35 times, covering 26 separate seasons. It marks the eighth-most number of years for a top pick by any school in the nation. - One of only two schools to have had at least one first-round draft selection in 17 of the last 24 drafts. - UF has had at least 40 players chosen in the NFL Draft for the decades of 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980 and 1990. Following his junior season with the Gators, Smith was a first-round selection in the 1990 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. On Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, Smith retired from the NFL. Smith starred for 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and spent the last two years with the Arizona Cardinals. He finished his career with 18,355 rushing yards and 164 rushing touchdowns, both of which are the highest totals ever posted in NFL history.
