FORT WAYNE DRAGON BOAT RACES 2018 Dear Community Leader Riverfront Fort Wayne and the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department invite you to become a sponsor for the 4th Annual Fort Wayne Dragon Boat Races. This dynamic community event will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2018 in the heart of downtown at Headwaters Park West. Sponsors like you make it possible for these quality-of-life enhancing events to occur in our community. Following are various levels of sponsorship available that will allow your organization to gain maximum exposure, along with participating as a team. Last year, the Fort Wayne Dragon Boat Races witnessed over 2,500 in attendance with 26 teams participating in this one-day event. Teams from throughout the community took part in this unique and exciting experience. Rowing toward victory, teams also raised over $30,000. Your sponsorship is crucial to the success and legacy of the Dragon Boat Races while exposing your organization to prime, engaging audiences and organized team building within our community. We look forward to following up with you to answer any questions you may have about your level of support. Sincerely, Riverfront Fort Wayne & Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation 2

JUNE 23 8AM 2018 The Fort Wayne Dragon Boat Races will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018. OPENING CEREMONIES S TA R T AT 8 A M 2018 EVENT GOALS To create a safe and fun event for all ages, no special skills necessary to participate. Long-term goals: have several local dragon boats, attract travel teams, integrate athletics and healthy activities into the overall production, highlighting athletic and physical activities opportunities on the rivers. Celebrate and engage the team sport of Dragon Boat Racing and competition. Enjoy the Riverfront, Headwaters Park and Downtown Fort Wayne. Highlight partners involved in the race. Increase awareness of the positive aspects of our community s rivers and their potential. Expose the community to a new activity that promotes health. Serve to grow other activities on and along our three rivers. 3

A W I N N I N G PA R T N E R S H I P Riverfront Fort Wayne Riverfront Fort Wayne exists to delight, energize and unite our community through moving experiences and extraordinary places. Riverfront Fort Wayne aims to guide the community in realizing the value of reconnecting back to the Fort Wayne rivers and riverfront areas. It is the goal that the community values the rivers as economic and placemaking assets to downtown, the broader community and ultimately the region. Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation The mission of the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life in Fort Wayne by providing positive opportunities for leisure time and by being stewards of our parklands, facilities, public trees and other resources entrusted to our care. TELL ME MORE Dragon Boat Racing Dragon Boat Racing is a rapidly growing sport that combines rich Chinese traditions, competition, team building exercises, and fun. Often, dragon boats are emblazoned with bright colors, dragon scales, which includes a dragonhead and tail. Typical dragon boats are 46 long and feature 20 paddlers, 1 drummer, and 1 steersman. During the course of the race, the job of the drummer is to keep an effective beat in order to synchronize the paddlers. Races are usually between 200-2000 meters and can last up to ten minutes. Many of the traditional Chinese elements are still practiced today, such as beating of the drums and throwing rice into the river. A common practice for many Dragon Boat Race opening ceremonies includes a practice known as Awaking the Dragon. Before each race, the dragon eyes are dotted. It is believed that once the eyes are dotted, the dragon will come to life. We are fortunate to have the opening ceremonies performed by the Fort Wayne Chinese Families and Friends Association. 20 PADDLERS ( I N C LU D I N G C A P TAIN) 1 DRUMMER (LESS THA N 160l b) 1 STEERSMAN (PR OVI DED) 4
