Riddle Story : The hungry Vikings Long ago a band of Vikings with their wives and children made ready for a long journey.they would sail from Norway to Iceland to make new homes. They would be at sea for weeks, living on hard crackers and dried cold meat. They could not cook on board for fear of fire.they knew they would be yearning for a good meal of roast beef when they reached land. But any beed they would bring along would spoil before they got to Iceland. Rolf Hairybeard the Viking Chiefcaptain talked over the problem with some of his men. We could tie long ropes to big pieces of meat and let them trail in the water.that might keep them cool enough so they would not spoil. Sharks would eat the meat Hairy beard answered. Let s keep the meat on board the ship but pile up snow and ice around it to keep it cold said another Viking. The ship would get full of water when the ice and snow melted objected Hairybeard. I can tell you how to keep the meat fresh for as long as you want said Hairybeard s wife. When she told them they all agreed it would work. What was her idea? 8
