Members of the media may obtain these by contacting David Faiella in the Sports Information Office. Upon acceptance, credentials will be held for pickup at the will call window, which is located inside the main entrance to the Berry Events Center. PHOTOGRAPHERS Photography credentials are limited to daily, weekly, and student newspapers, wire services, and team photographers, and must be requested at least one week in advance of the game to be covered. RADIO Requests for radio broadcast permission at the Berry Events Center must be made through the Sports Information Office at least one week in advance of the game to be broadcast. Northern Michigan maintains a courtesy telephone line for visiting radio stations. Stations wishing to install additional lines may do so by calling the Sports Information Office. 2004-05 SEASON PREVIEW OUTLOOK During the 2003-04 season the Northern Michigan University women s basketball team played a bit shorthanded. At one time last season the Cats had 10 or fewer players available. But they made it through the season going 19-8 overall and 11-7 in the GLIAC. The GLIAC record was good for a fourth place finish in the GLIAC North race. The Cats return six letterwinners and four starters from last season. Emily Samuelson will probably be the biggest loss to the squad. She was a GLIAC North Division All-Conference Second Team selection and a member of the GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team. Samuelson was second on the team in 2003-04 with a 15.8 ppg average, led the team with 89 steals and 124 assists. She also had 15 blocks which was second on the squad. Also not returning this season are Joy Kohegyi and Jennie Steenwyk. Back on the squad includes 2003-04 GLIAC North Division All- Conference First Team member, Tiffany Grubaugh, as she led the squad in points with 533 (19.7 ppg). Grubaugh was named to the 2004-05 Women s Division II Bulletin Super 16 Selections. Holly Cole, Tera Opperman, Andrea Brooke, Emily Belland and Michelle Moard return to the squad. NMU made a return trip to the GLIAC Tournament after the 2003-04 season for the 15 th consecutive season. They lost in the first round to Ashland (95-82). Coach Mike Geary now in his 17 th season in Marquette will welcome four newcomers to the squad. Also back in the fold is Danicia Braun who appeared in five games last season and was granted a medical redshirt after re-injuring her knee which required surgery. We have some experience back from a year ago, Geary said. We have six of the seven players who comprised the playing group a year ago. We will have players who know what to expect when we get into league play. Newcomers include freshmen Aimee Kovinchick, Allison Carroll and Maria Kasza. Junior college transfer Autumn Kuhtic fills a need in the middle for the Cats. The roster has three seniors who will be looked to for leadership. We will have to have someone set up and give us some leadership. Geary added. Not just one person. Senior leadership is important for a championship caliber team. GUARDS Grubaugh is the shooting guard for Cat offense. She was named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week last season on three separate occasions. Grubaugh was second in the conference in 2003-04 in scoring by averaging 19.1 ppg. She was also fifth in the GLIAC in assists (3.63 apg), second in three-point field goal percentage (.424 percent) and second in three-point field goals made (2.67 avg/g). Grubaugh led the team in field goals by going 181-396 (.457 percent) and three-point field goals by shooting 72-170 (.424 percent). Grubaugh is the best perimeter player returning in our conference, Geary said. She is an explosive scorer and a much improved defender. Opperman looks to have the inside track to run the point for the Cats in 2004-05. She was third on the team last season, as a wing player, in assists (98) and steals (45). Opperman scored 236 points during the 2003-04 season (8.7 ppg). She is a tough defender and competitor, Geary said. Braun could also play at the point. She is going to have an impact on the team according to Coach Geary, but he added that she has to improve her ability to handle the ball to have a major impact. Cole a good outside shooter will be looked at for her three-point range scoring. During the 2003-04 season, Cole was third on the team from the arc by converting 31-105 (.295 percent). She could find her way to one of the wings. According to Coach Geary, Cole is ready to come CATS HAVE THE DEPTH TO COMPETE into her own this season. A very good perimeter shooter, Geary added. Kovinchick and Kasza will fill some needs in the backcourt. Kovinchick is a talented guard who can dish the rock. Kasza is a scorer who will be looked at for the shooting guard spot. We put a lot of pressure on our guards to carry us offensively a year ago, Geary said. We have the personnel to bolster that situation. FORWARDS Brooke and Moard are the two season veterans returning along the baseline. Brooke averaged in double-digits in the scoring column for 2003-04 with an 11.9 ppg average (319 points). She was also second on the team on the boards with 155 (5.7 rpg). Brooke is a good midrange shooter according to Geary. Moard led the team with 192 rebounds (7.1 rpg). She played in 27 games last season, as she only started 10 games. Michelle will play a major role this year and needs to establish some consistency, Geary said. Carroll is the lone newcomer who could crack the line-up at one of the forward spots. She will be an impact freshman, Geary added. A tough minded player as we feel she will be one of the top freshmen in our league. Lauren Bartelli has to sit out this season because she is a transfer. CENTERS Belland is the lone returnee in the middle for the Cats. She averaged 6.2 ppg and 4.8 rpg for the 2003-04 season. She has worked hard to develop her game, Geary said. Geary expects her offensive numbers to go up this season. Junior college transfer Kuhtic will provide relief in the middle for the Cats. She could be a big surprise for the Cats and a real good player for the Cats. We have to have a more potent inside attack, Geary said. We struggled with that a year ago. SCHEDULE The Cats will play their first five games away from Marquette, Mich. NMU opens the season at the CSU-Pueblo Tournament and will face the host school and Nebraska-Kearney. The second week of the season the Cats will play at the Ashland Tournament against Indiana (Pa.) and Tiffin. NMU will play in a third tournament at Michigan Tech before Christmas against Central State (Ohio) and Florida Southern. Lake Superior State looks as the team to beat in the GLIAC North. Ferris State, Michigan Tech, Grand Valley and NMU will all look to challenge for the top spot. NMU was picked in a tie for fourth place in the 2004-05 GLIAC Preseason Women s Basketball Coaches Poll. Ashland and Gannon in the GLIAC South are the favorites. If we do what we can do to improve our ability to handle the ball. I think that we can be one of the top teams in the league, Geary said. We are goanna have to rebound better and compete. The Cats have the weapons to challenge for one of the top places in the GLIAC North and make another trip to the GLIAC Tournament. A trip to the NCAA II post-season is not out of the question if the team can gel at the right time. This season the team should not have a problem with not having enough bodies to compete night in and out. With the freshmen, transfer and returnees the Cats could be a real threat. He won his 400th collegiate game during the 2003-04 season as the Cats finished with a 19-8 overall record. It was the first time in his tenure at NMU that he had back-to-back seasons in which his team failed to win 20 or more games. The 2002-03 squad finished with a un-geary like 16-10 record, which was only the third time in his NMU tenure that his team did not win 20 or more games in a season. He reached two coaching milestones during the 2001-02 season. He notched his 300th win in 14 years at Northern Michigan and won his 350th game in 16 years as a head collegiate coach. In 16 years at Northern Michigan, he has compiled a 354-111 record, a winning percentage of.761. His overall collegiate record is 401-121, a winning percentage of.768. Geary s teams have won 20 or more games 12 times during his 16-year tenure, including 20, or more wins, the last eight out of 10 years. He has never had a losing season. His worst season records are still an enviable 17-10 mark in 1989-90 and 1993-94. He also won 20 or more games in two years as head coach at Lake Superior State, giving him 20 or more victories 14 times in 18 years as a head coach on the collegiate level. The 1997-98 team was the most successful in school history. Their accomplishments included: a school-record 28-4 season, a second-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division title, their sixth GLIAC post-season tournament championship, qualified for the NCAA-II tournament for the seventh time, won their second Great Lakes Regional title, advanced to the Elite Eight for the second time and advanced to the Final Four for the first time. They defeated Seattle Pacific, 86-57, in the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion, North Dakota, 79-69, in the semifinals. The 1997-98 squad established five team records and tied another. The six seniors on the squad set a standard for years to come, winning 101 games and losing just 21 during their four-year careers. In 1989 and 1997, Geary was selected GLIAC Coach-of-the-Year. The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) also named him Women s Basketball Coach-of-the-Year in the state in 1997. During his tenure at NMU, he has coached 33 first-team All-GLIAC players, six GLIAC Most Valuable Players, 35 All-GLIAC Academic players, five All-Americans and five All-American Honorable Mention players. The 1995-96 Wildcats were the first NMU team to advance to the Elite Eight after winning their first Great Lakes Regional title over Bellarmine College, 84-55. The 'Cats lost in the first round of the Elite Eight, dropping a 81-76 decision to No. 2 ranked Abilene Christian University. Geary was appointed head coach in August of 1988, coming to NMU from Lake Superior State University where he compiled 23-5 and 24-5 records in two years as head coach. He took over a team which was six games below the.500 mark the previous year in the conference and produced a squad that finished second with a 14-4 ledger. The team posted a 24-4 overall mark and became the first team to reach the NCAA II playoffs. Geary, a native of South Bend, Ind., is a 1979 graduate of Aquinas College where he was a three-year starter on the basketball team and twice served as team captain. His first coaching assignment was at East Grand Rapids High School where he served as the boys' junior varsity coach. He also served as an assistant at Lake Superior State for both the men's and women's teams. Geary, and his wife, Noelle, an NMU graduate and a teacher in the Father Marquette School system, are the parents of two sons, Sean (18) a freshman at Michigan Tech and Tyler (14). NMU COACHING STAFF Michelle Guyant-Holloway Mike Geary and Northern Michigan University A four-time letterwinner (1993-96) at Northern Michigan University, she joined the staff in 1998-99 as a full-time assistant coach after a stellar playing career. She concluded her career at NMU as the 19th all-time scorer with 978 points and the 17th all-time rebounder with 486. She led the Wildcats in rebounding in 1996, was named to the GLIAC All-Tournament Team, earned All-GLIAC First-Team honors and Second-Team All-Region honors. She was also selected MVP of the 1995 GLIAC Tournament. 2003-04 YEAR IN REVIEW With seven returning players, four of those who started 20 or more games last year, the Northern Michigan University women s basketball team should be a dominant force in this season. Coach Mike Geary and his coaching staff are looking forward to a successful season with their experienced squad. The Cats finished the 2003-04 season with an overall record of 19-8. They ended the season is a two-way tie for third place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 11-7 record, winning 19 games total and made their 15th straight appearance in the GLIAC post-season tournament. The Cats were knocked out of the GLIAC Tournament in the first round with a loss to Ashland University, 82-05. NMU had winning streaks of two, four, five, and seven games for the year. They compiled a 13-2 record for home games and a 5-6 away record. Scoring a total of 2,132 (79 ppg) points and allowing 1,865 (69.1 ppg) gave the Cats a winning margin of +9.9. They shot 45 percent from the floor (750-1,654), 36 percent from the 3-point line (179-502), and 73.1 percent from the free throw line (453-620). Coach Geary, who completed his 16th season as head coach for the Wildcats, will continue as one of the most sucessful coaches in NMU history and in the GLIAC. His overall coaching collegiate record for the past 18 years is 401-121, a winning percentage of.768. Being at NMU for the past 16 years, he has compiled a record of 354-111, a winning percentage of.776. Emily Samuelson left quite the impression on NMU as she had an outstanding senior season for which she was named to the GLIAC North Division All-Conference Second Team as well as the GLIAC North Division All- Defensive Team. Samuelson finished her two-year career as a Wildcat with a total of 752 total points, 225 assists, 221 rebounds, and 165 steals. In the 2003-04 season Samuelson averaged 15.8 points per game, 4.6 assists per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, and 3.3 steals per game in 34.4 minutes per game. Joy Kohegyi and Jennie Steenwyk will also not be returning to the team. Kohegyi averaged 2.6 points per game with a total of 49 points. Steenwyk will also not be returning to the team as she contributed 16 points to the season. Tiffany Grubaugh will be returning to the Wildcats as she was named to GLIAC All-Conference First Team. Leading NMU in scoring with 533 points, Grubaugh averaged 19.7 points per game. Playing in and starting all 27 games Grubaugh contributed to the team season stats with 147 rebounds (5.4), 104 assists (3.9), and 53 steals (2.0). Emily Belland started all 27 games in the 2003-04 season for the Cats, averaging 18.5 minutes per games and tallying 167 points (6.2), 129 boards (4.8), nine assists, 13 blocks and 13 steals. Tera Opperman, Holly Cole, and Andrea Brooke each saw a lot of time on the court in their first season in a Wildcat uniform. Brooke, a transfer player, played in all 27 games of her first season as a Wildcat. Brooke had 319 points (11.8), 155 rebounds (5.7), 28 steals, 18 assists, and 2 blocks in the 2003-04 campaign. Opperman and Cole both played in all 27 games. Opperman scored 236 points (8.7), pulled down 102 (3.8) rebounds, and added 98 assists, four blocks, and 45 steals in an average of 29.1 minutes per game. Cole had 145 points (5.4), 57 rebounds (2.1), 26 assists, and 12 steals in the 2003-04 season, with a team high 86 percent free throw shooting percentage (12-14). Samuelson received honors as Most Valuable Player, Coaches Award and the Outstanding Defensive Player (along with Danicia Braun). The Outstanding Newcomer Award went to Cole while the Free Throw honors were awarded to Brooke, Outstanding Rebounder to Michelle Moard, and the Molly Sayen Award went to Emily Belland. GREAT LAKES INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) was founded in June 1972. During the two years previous to the GLIAC s founding, several a were made to create a new NCAA College Division conference. In 1971, the Great Lakes Athletic Conference was formed, but plans for the new conference were put on hold, and several of the participating schools subsequently withdrew their support. The idea did not die though, and since 1972-73 the GLIAC has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women. The GLIAC features a membership of 13 schools: Ashland University, Ferris State University, Gannon University, Grand Valley State University, University of Findlay, Hillsdale College, Lake Superior State University, Mercyhurst College, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Northwood University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Wayne State University. Overall the GLIAC conducts championships in 19 sports, nine for men and 10 for women. The policy-making body is the GLIAC Executive Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution its director of athletics, faculty representative, and senior woman administrator. Final approval of all GLIAC legislation is required by the Council of GLIAC Presidents. As GLIAC commissioner, Tom Brown is responsible for all conference administration. NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY The University: A four-year, public, coeducational university founded in 1899, we offer learning opportunities to approximately 8,900 undergraduate students. Each incoming student is equipped with an IBM ThinkPad. Location: NMU is located in an environment unrivaled by any other, on the south shore of Lake Superior in Marquette, Mich., a town with breathtaking vistas and 23,000 lucky residents. Campus: Our campus is wired to state-of-the-art technology and the Internet. We re large enough to offer scenic spaces and 50 quality facilities, such as: high-end specialty computer labs, a learning resource center; a theatre; a speech and hearing clinic; a student art gallery; a University museum; two on-campus radio stations; a public TV station; an observatory; an ice rink; a swimming pool; a rock-climbing wall; a diving tank; the Jacobetti Center for technical programs; the Berry Events Center; and the Superior Dome, an 8,000-seat stadium (the largest wooden dome in the world). But, we re still small enough to keep everything within walking distance (which is especially nice in the winter). Faculty: NMU has talented faculty members, 80 percent of whom hold doctorates or the highest degrees in their fields, and a low student-faculty ratio of 20-to-1. Our average class size is 23, our average lab size is 16, and our average seminar size is 10. Of all entry-level courses, 93 percent are taught by career faculty. Residence Halls: NMU s eight residence halls are organized into living areas called houses which include 40 to 45 students who actively shape their own living environments. Four students share a suite (two bedrooms and a bathroom), and all residence halls have great locations within five minutes of eating, learning, and studying areas. Extracurricular: Along with all our natural wonders, you ll discover 200 clubs and organizations on campus, including academic, service, social, professional, religious, and special interest groups. We also have a full program of intramural athletics. Intercollegiate Athletics: NMU is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Varsity teams for women include: basketball, cross country, Nordic skiing, soccer, swimming and diving, track and field and volleyball. Varsity teams for the men include: basketball, football, golf, hockey, and Nordic skiing. All sports are NCAA Division II, except ice hockey, which is Division I. Olympic Education Center: Northern Michigan University is designated as the only United States Olympic Education Center by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Olympic athletes in boxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, short-track speedskating, Naturbahn luge, Nordic skiing, and biathlon train for elite international competitions while pursuing their educations at NMU and Marquette High School. Cost: NMU operates under a flat rate tuition plan where students who enroll in 12 to 18 credits per semester pay one rate. The 2004-05 flat rate for Michigan residents is $2,667 per semester ($5,334 per academic year with fees). The rate for non-michigan residents is $4,371 per semester ($8,742 per academic year with fees). NORTHERN, NATURALLY Les Wong University President On July 1, 2004 the Board of Trustees of Northern Michigan University named Leslie Wong NMU s President. From 1999 to 2004, Wong was the Vice President for academic affairs at Valley City State University in North Dakota. Wong has also served as the Provost and academic vice persident at the University of Souther Colorad, Pueblo, the academic dean at eh Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washingon, and a psychology instructor and women s varsity tennis coach at Pierce College in Tacoma, Washington. Wong obtained his bachelor s degree in psychology from Gonzaga University in 1972, then went on to receive his master s degree in experimental psychology from Eastern Washington University in 1974. In 1986 Wong received his Ph. D in educational psychology from Washingotn State University. Wong and his wife, Phyllis, are the proud parents of 3 sons, Isaac (29), Nathan(25), and Brian(22). Wong enjoys running, fly fishing, alpine backpacking, canoeing, baseball, reading ethnic and civil war literature, and collecting antique measuring instruments. Godfrey s official title is athletic director and associate vice president for athletics and recreation. Godfrey, a Maywood, Ill. native, was in charge of NMU s recreational services since he came to NMU in 1979. He was named an associate vice president in August 2001. Prior to coming to Northern, he was a junior high teacher, coach and school administrator in Maywood. Godfrey earned a bachelor s degree in social science from Illinois State University in 1971 and a master s degree in recreation from NMU in 1984. He is a certified member of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association. Godfrey is also a member of the Marquette Kiwanis Board of Directors, the Lake Superior Community Partnership Board of Directors and the Recreation Tourism Commission. Godfrey and his wife, Kathie, have two sons - Ken and Keith- and two daughters - Kristine and Kimberly. Ken, Keith and Kristine are Northern graduates. Kimberly is currently a sophomore at Northern. THE HOME OF THE WILDCATS The Berry Events Center is in its sixth season as the home of the Northern Michigan University women s basketball team in 2004-05. Opened in August, 1999, the BEC is the Berry newest of Northern Michigan s athletic facilities. The facility is named after John W. Berry, Jr., a 1971 graduate of Northern Michigan University, who donated $2 million to the project. Berry is a longtime member of NMU Presidents Club and a charter member of NMU s Edgar L. Harden Century Club, whose members donated at least $100,000 to the University s Development Fund. Berry is the CEO of Berry Investment, Inc., of Dayton, Ohio, Accusport Corporation, Microwave Sensors, Berry Braiding, Inc., and Mad River Sportman s Club. He is also the retired president of The Berry Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bell South Corporation, one of the world s largest publishers of telephone directories. The nearly $11-million facility provides individual seating for approximately 3,800 fans, in addition to 16 luxury boxes, which includes a President s Suite. Along the perimeter of the arena are four large concession areas as well as standing room for approximately 400 fans. The Berry Events Center is not only home to the NMU basketball teams, but also the NMU hockey team and the United States Speedskating team. During the majority of the year, the arena features an Olympic-size ice sheet measuring 200' x 100'. When rigged for basketball, the court is placed on a insulated floor that covers the ice. In addition, seating for 500 fans is place courtside, as well as a scorer s table and band area. The BEC also features locker rooms and support areas for the men s and women s basketball teams, the men s ice hockey team, and the United States Speedskating Team, along with four general-use locker rooms. In addition, skate rental and changing areas are located on the lower level of the complex. The arena is also designed to host concerts and University events and is equipped with moveable theatrical rigging and lighting.
