HARNETT AREA SHAG ASSOCIATION JulyAugust 2016 NEWSLETTER HASA News! Your newsletter staff took a little time off this summer and is combining our July and August newsletter. We hope that summer has been good to you, and for those members who have children in school it is rapidly approaching time to buy those school clothes and other needed school items. There certainly has been a lot going on shag-wise this summer. The events posted on Carolinashagger.com and other sites have never been so numerous, it seems. We hope that you braved the heat to hear a few beach bands at the various nearby towns and cities this summer. And, it s not too early to be thinking about the next SOS in September, just a few weeks away. Our July party with Joey Warren was a big success; Joey always brings a crowd. We are very excited about this coming Friday night s party with the band North Tower. North Tower has lots of hits and is truly a beach/shag band. So please plan to come on out on Friday, August 12 at 7:00 at the Dunn Shrine Center, 211 N. Clinton Avenue, Dunn. We have been advertising our parties in a few new places and continue to seek other ways to get the word out. It is absolutely critical that for our club to endure and grow, our members support HASA by coming to the parties and telling others about us, and of course, to keep your membership active. Joe McCorquodale attended the recent ASCA Summer Workshop in Columbia, South Carolina and came back very excited about all that went on there. It is our hope that our club can sponsor some CSA events in the future. There are still a few 2016 membership cards to be picked up at the registration area. (They are on the side table). Please listen out for your phone tree reminder! Please note the dates for the remaining parties for 2016 on your calendars. Keep on shaggin!!

PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER OF HASA!! Just a reminder that we want everyone who attends our parties to be a part of HASA by joining at your earliest opportunity. Membership applications are available at each dance, by downloading the application from our website (www.hasadance.com) or printing from the last page of the newsletter. Please bring your completed application to the next dance. For new or renewing members admission is free the night of the party that you submit your application (unless a band night), a real savings and what a great way to see old friends and meet new ones. You will be given a laminated membership card at the next monthly dance. Membership fees are a key component of any shag club s budget. We are still down a few members this year, due in part to the February party being cancelled due to the weather. Be sure to take a look at pictures from our parties on the HASA website or Facebook page (addresses noted elsewhere in the newsletter.) Linda Johnson (Secretary Walt s wife) has volunteered to help take pictures at our future dances, giving Crystal Strickland and others a much needed break. We can still use a volunteer webmaster for our website, serving as a Facebook Administrator, helping work the front desk, decorating, etc. It takes a lot of work to put on our parties. Please consider these opportunities and if interested please contact Cotton Johnson, President at 910.850-8671 (Note: this is a new phone number for Cotton). HASA may need some new board officers for 2017. Please consider serving HASA in any volunteer capacity. We welcome all members who will assist with the many details for the Friday party set up (setting up tables & chairs, tablecloths, decorations) at 6:30 p.m. on the Thursday night before the dance. HASA welcomes ANY ideas, suggestions or comments that will help HASA become an even better club and increase membership and charity donations please do not hesitate to contact any officer with your ideas. We appreciate and thank you for your ideas on how we can make HASA better for everyone. These suggestions will be discussed at the next HASA board meeting.

This Month s Meal!! For our Friday, August 12 party we are tentatively planning to have pork loin with trimmings and Cameron s beans and potatoes. Our meal is being provided by James and Lucretia Jackson Members, please bring a dessert, vegetable sides, and salads. Guests also often bring items and we especially appreciate that! We are very dependent on our members bringing extra food items. We want to be sure there is enough for everyone! Please be generous with our bartenders! A great bunch of guys that serve us well! SPONSORS NEEDED Want to advertise your business on the HASA website or newsletter? We are offering the opportunity for a few sponsors to advertise their business or organization through HASA. We would publish your business card or information on our website and newsletter. This would provide additional exposure for your business or organization. If interested, please contact Walt Johnson, Secretary at wjohnson_ncsu@yahoo.com or 252.292.1816. BOARD MEETING The HASA Board met on July 7, 2016 at The Dunn Shrine Center. Present were Cotton Johnson, President; Joe McCorquodale, Vice President; Nancy Blackman, Treasurer; Walt Johnson, Secretary; and J. W. Jackson, Sergeant at Arms. The minutes were approved as was the Treasurer s report. Old business was discussed, including having a joint July/August newsletter, membership status, formal recognition beginning in January 2017 of those who bring food and help decorate, obtaining sponsors, decision not to purchase a defibrillator at this time due to costs and proximity to emergency services, decision not to purchase a microwave due to potential abuse by other organizations using the Shrine Center, possibility of selling HASA tee-shirts, golf shirts, and license plate holders, line dance/shag lessons, and promoting our parties. New business focused on growth in committees, DJ s, and board recruitment for 2017. Also discussed were location of lost and found items and using our email list for more frequent contact with members,

Spring and Summer Beach Music Outdoor Bands Across Eastern NC Many area towns are still busy with their beach music events. This provides a great opportunity to listen to some great beach music bands and get some dancing in! We already know of several upcoming events but please check the internet for rain delays, location changes, etc. before you head out! There may be others for which we are not aware. So as you see there are plenty of free bands to hear this summer. Also, TJ s Nightlife in Raleigh always has a beach music band now on Wednesday nights during the summer and North Hills, Raleigh has bands on Thursdays. Another favorite is Loafers in Raleigh. A Sample of Upcoming Free Outdoor Events Benson-Sundown in Downtown August 11-Coastline Clinton-Alive After 5 August 18-Coastline September 15-Band of Oz Rocky Mount Downtown Live August 18-The Tams September 1-Steve Owens and Summertime September 15-East Coast Rhythm and Blues September 29-The Embers Remembrances Please let HASA secretary, Walt Johnson (wjohnson_ncsu@yahoo.com) know when one of our members or member s family is experiencing health issues, hospitalization, other personal crisis or when there is a death so he can share this with the membership and note in the next newsletter. We want to remember regular attendee Hank Davis in the loss of his wife Vickie on June 9. Events for Area Shag Clubs: We thank all of our wonderful friends from numerous area shag clubs who join us each month at our parties! We encourage our members to support their club dances in return. Some clubs may recognize your HASA membership for a reduced admission charge. This also applies to out-of-state clubs.
