Remembrance from Family and Friends First and foremost, Bob was a great dad. Bob introduced us kids to Hunting, Fishing, Skiing, Boating and Fast Cars. There are so many stories and memories and so little room to write. These experiences with Bob helped shape our character and continue to influence our children and our children s children even today, Bob s Great Grandchildren, nieces and nephews are the beneficiaries of his extraordinary life and character. He will be missed but never forgotten.
Born April 21, 1931 in Duluth MN, Bob served with the US Army 101 st Paratroopers. From my earliest memories, Bob always carried his silver jump wings a cherished award and remembrance of a special time in his life. We grew up on stories of night jumps with heavy gear-bags and chutes that barely slowed your decent. It was Bob s version of walking five miles to school in the dead of winter and, by the way, it was uphill both ways. He loved the 101 st and they kept in touch over the years but Bob was saddened to see so many of his friends precede him. Bob hunted all across the Western United States Elk, Deer, Moose, Antelope, Bear and birds of every make and model. Hunting trips were the highlight of his year and he was blessed with great hunting companions. Hunting and the Gun Club(s) were his passion he loved his shooting and loved the people he did it with.
Bob BJ Johnson was a member of Portland Gun Club, for many years, and served on the Board of Directors. BJ was always one to help organize shooting events and volunteer with club work parties. His favorite Clubs were Portland Gun Club, Vancouver, Camas Lake, and Canby. Bob shot some ATA/PITA events, but his passion was game shoots such as, Annie s, Backers, and his favorite the Draw backer. He liked Draw backers the best, it encourages shooters to shoot with other shooters and get to know each other better. BJ was always willing to jump in and help new shooters that weren t sure of what to do. He would give them shells, teach safety, and help them to make sure they were learning how to break targets. One of my most vivid memories is that he was a friend with everyone and liked by all. Mike Riggs and The Portland Gun Club Family
Bob Johnson was a dear friend to my husband Jerry and our family. He and Jerry shared a common interest in shooting, fishing and hunting, They deer hunted together and bird hunted far and wide. One-time Jerry and Bob were hunting pheasant in California with their dogs when our son Casey who was only eight or ten years old at the time, asked me "how did I know they were hunting? They could be down there with a couple of flemsies". We all got a good laugh on that. They bought a school bus together and parked it in Dorris, California to shoot ground squirrels in. They would take their friends and an armory of shells and have a great time in that silly school bus. On one of those trips Casey got to witness Bob's largest trophy. Bob laid his gun across the truck took aim and pulled the trigger. To everyone's amazement he had bagged Jerry s 2500 lb SUBURBAN CHEVROLET.SHOOTING THE HOOD DEAD CENTER. We met Bob during our tenure on the Board of Directors for the PGC in the 1980's and 1990's. It was a great time for a good group of people to come together to support the interest of the club. All of us recognized the heritage we were entrusted with and took pride in preserving the Grand Dame. Bob's love of the club guided all of his decisions and his knowledge was valued. Bob was more than a friend. My daughter baked him pineapple upside down cakes for his birthdays and Christmas. Casey and all the granddaughters hunted with Jerry and Bob, and after Jerry passed Bob was still looking out for my family. A friend was never truer. My sympathies to his children of whom he was so proud. As were we all. Thank you Bob. Bonnie Lane
