DECEMBER 2008 THE TIGER TIMES POST ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THE NUTCRACKER 2008 By Maya Sousa 3rd Grade On Saturday, September 6 th, I went to an audition for the Nutcracker Ballet. The audition was at Purchase College. At the audition they showed us a lot of dances. I did not get a call on Sunday, so I was in the show. Rehearsals started October 1. We practice on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:45 pm to 5:15 pm. I was really tired after the dancing. My favorite part of the rehearsals was dancing with the Purchase Dancers. They are the rats. We practice a lot before the show. I love to be on stage for the Nutcracker. I got to be on stage 5 times! My favorite performance was when my school came to the show. All of the first graders came. It was a great experience! MY SANTA By Petar Janicijevic, 3rd Grade On Friday, December 12th, I went to my mom s Christmas Party. My sister, my friend and I made Gingerbread men and watched Shrek the Halls and Kung Fu Panda. There were coconut, chocolate chip, gummy candies, and M&M s. After, we went to a coloring room to color Disney movie stars pages and we ate pizza and drank HI-C. We ate candies. Then Santa came. All of us could sit on his lap. I got the longest time on his lap because I told him what I want: I want a puppy! He told me a story that he knew a guy and he had a puppy that grew up too much. So, he said, I may want to think it over, if I really want a puppy. At the end, he gave me the present!!! I got a Game System. Elli and Kristina got story makers. It was awesome. MY REPORT CARD By Sofia Puff, 3rd Grade POPOVER RECIPE by Theo Vicioso, 5th Grade You should try this recipe because it is so good. My mom makes strawberry butter that you can add, but you can try the popovers with plain butter, maple syrup or jelly. We make them with either white flour or whole wheat flour. I love making popovers with friends. It is fast and easy. Popovers Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brush insides of 12 muffin cups with melted butter. Break 2 eggs into mixing bowl. Add 1 cup milk and beat well. Add 1 cup flour and 1/4 teaspoon of salt and whisk until blended. Pour batter into muffin cups until about half full. Bake 30 minutes without opening the oven. Remove muffins from pan and prick with fork to let steam escape. Strawberry Butter Melt one stick butter with 6-8 large fresh or frozen strawberries. Add sugar to taste (approximately 2 tablespoons). Mash and mix! Butter is good both hot or cold! My report card is coming soon and I get good grades. My goal is to get three fours or more. I am going to try my best and work hard to improve what I can do. I hope I can improve my goal to prove to my sister and brothers what I can do. And I know I can!
Page 3 THE WINTER SOLSTICE By Jacob Brady, 4 th grade The solstice is the time each year when the sun is the farthest from being directly over the equator at noon. When the earth rotates, it is tilted on its rotational axis, and it doesn t stay straight. This is what produces the seasons. There are two solstices, the Winter solstice and the Summer solstice. The Winter solstice is on either the 21 st or the 22 nd of December. The Winter solstice marks the first day of winter so if you know when the first day of winter is, then you know when the Winter solstice is! The shortest day and the longest night of the year occur at the time of the Winter solstice. The Winter solstice was celebrated in ancient times. In Ancient Egypt, the solstice was the day of the death of Osiris, the god of the dead. In Brazil, the people had astronomical observatories to observe the solstices. The Winter solstice was also the time of the last feast of the year for Europeans. Almost all the farm animals would be slaughtered so they wouldn t have to be fed during the winter, and they were eaten at the feast. Also, at this time the beer and the wine had fully fermented, and they drank this at their celebration. In almost all cultures, the Winter solstice celebrated the death and the rebirth of the culture s Sun God. People all over the world still celebrate forms of the Winter solstice. Christmas occurs on the date of what used to be the Winter solstice in the Julian calendar. Some of the holidays at this time have specific traditions involving light, like Chanukah. Every day of Chanukah we light another candle to illuminate the increasing darkness as the moon wanes. People celebrate in many other ways. How does your family celebrate it?
