The Rays are one of three teams in baseball with 40 wins, along with St. Louis (45) and Houston (41). The Rays are 28-5 (.848) when they score first, best in the majors, compared to 11-26 when their opponent scores first. The Rays have allowed 2 runs or fewer 36 times in their first 71 games, most by an AL team in the DH era (since 1973) last time an AL team did this was 1972, when the O s (43), A s (37) and Tigers (36) all did it. The Rays lead the AL with a 3.28 ERA and rank 2nd in fielding pct. (.987) behind Detroit the staff has a major-league-low.234 opp avg. and ranks 2nd in the AL with 598 SO, behind Cleveland (633). The Rays next 6 games are within the AL East yesterday the Rays finished a stretch of 20 straight games outside the division, going 14-6. ODD WAY TO END IT Yesterday was only the second 1-0 loss on a sac fly in Rays history (also Sep 7, 2008 at TOR, Rod Barajas in the 2nd inning) it was the seventh loss in club history on a walk-off sac fly, first since July 30, 2012 at OAK (Jemile Weeks in the 15th inning, lost 4-3) it was the first time an AL team won 1-0 on a walk-off sac fly since July 23, 1992 at Cleveland Stadium, on a 14th-inning sac fly by Carlos Baerga who was at Progressive Field yesterday for the 1995 Indians Celebration Weekend. PITCHING AN ENIGMA The Rays allowed only 6 runs in the 5-game road trip, good for a 1.21 ERA (44.2-IP, 6-ER), after allowing 16 runs in the last game of the homestand Tues vs. WAS this was their fewest runs allowed in any 5-game stretch since April 20-24, 2013 (also 6) they achieved this even though the bullpen threw the same number of innings as the starters (22.1) the bullpen yielded 2 ER (0.81 ERA) and the starters allowed 4 ER (1.61 ERA). The Rays allowed exactly 1 run in all 3 games at Cleveland the first time in club history they allowed 1 run or fewer in each game of a series (min. 3 games). The trip s only loss came in a game in which their starter (Alex Colome yesterday) tossed 7 scoreless innings; in the 4 wins their starters totaled just 15.1 IP, an average of less than 4 IP per start. The Rays won matchups of Steve Geltz vs. WAS Jordan Zimmermann as well as Erasmo Ramirez vs. CLE Corey Kluber on the trip despite getting only 2 IP and 3 IP from the starters, respectively they won those games 5-0 and 4-1. ALEX COLOME Yesterday retired his first 16 batters faced (5.1 perfect), before yielding an infield single to Michael Bourn with one out in the 6th according to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the 2nd-longest perfect game bid in Rays history, behind Matt Garza (April 30, 2009 vs. BOS), whose perfect game bid was also spoiled on an infield single, by Jacoby Ellsbury leading off the 7th inning (6.0 perfect) it was the longest by any major league rookie since TEX Yu Darvish on Sep 3, 2012 at KC (5.2 perfect). RAYS vs. BLUE JAYS The Rays are 6-1 vs. Toronto this season (3-0 at home, 3-1 on road) and have won 4 straight the last meeting was April 24-26, when the Rays outscored them 21-6 and completed their first sweep of Toronto at home since Sep 21-23, 2012 the Rays 161 wins are their most against any opponent their 161-141 (.533) record is their 2nd best vs. an AL opponent (16-10 vs. HOU) the Rays were 8-11 last year, ending a streak of six straight winning seasons vs. the Jays, during which time they were 72-37. JUNE RISING IN THE EAST The Rays are 14-6 in the month of June, 2nd in the majors to Toronto (see chart) with a win tonight, they d clinch a winning month of June for the first time since 2011 (16-11) the Rays have a 3.07 ERA this month, but that mark would be 2.44 if not for their 16-4 setback on Tues vs. WAS. STILL ON TOP The Rays remain alone BEST RECORD, MLB, JUNE in first place thanks to yesterday s loss by Toronto 14-5 (.737) New York the Rays have held sole possession of first place for 7 straight days, and a share of first for 9 straight days overall this season, they ve had a share of first place 19 days, including 12 days alone Tampa Bay Pittsburgh New York-AL Baltimore 14-6 (.700) 13-6 (.684) 12-6 (.667) 13-7 (.650) on top the last time they had sole possession of first place this late in the season was end of play July 30, 2013. The top 4 teams in the AL East are separated by only 3.0 games, and they have 4 of the majors 5 best records in the month of June (see chart) since divisional play began in 1969, it s only the second time the AL East has had its top 4 teams this close together on this date in 1973, the Yankees were being chased by the Orioles (-1.5), Brewers (-1.5) and Tigers (-3.0) Baltimore went on to win it by 8 games. OBSTACLE COURSE The Rays stand alone in first place at 40-31 despite: using a major-league-most 44 players (tied with ATL), 26 pitchers, 21 relief pitchers and 16 rookies according to Stats LLC: 44 players used is a club record before the All-Star break (43 in 2003) 26 pitchers used is a club record (25 in 2006) the Rays are one of only 10 teams in major league history to use 26 pitchers before the All-Star break, and only three teams have used more pitchers before the break: the 2013 Blue Jays (29), 2014 Angels (28) and 2014 Rangers (28) the Rays have a chance to become the first team since divisional play began in 1969 to lead the majors in pitchers used and win their division. 21 relievers used is 2 shy of the club record (2004). sending 17 players to the disabled list for a total of 19 stints, one shy of Texas (20 stints) for most in the majors that includes seven DL stints by six starting pitchers the DL peaked at a club-record 13 players on April 23 and stands at 11 players currently. Over the past 25 games (starting May 26), Steven Souza Jr. and Joey Butler have either scored or driven in 44 of the Rays 91 runs (48 pct.) Rays rookies have accounted for 34 pct. of the home runs hit by AL rookies (29 of 85), led by Souza (14) and Butler (6). PEN ON HISTORIC PACE The Rays have a save in all but 8 of their 40 wins they re on pace for 73 saves this season, which would break the 1990 White Sox s major league record of 68 the club record is 52 (2008) their 32 saves are T-3rd most (with the 1990 White Sox) in major league history through 70 games, after the 2001 Mariners and 1997 Orioles (both 34) Brad Boxberger, with 18 saves, has a chance to become the 10th different Rays save leader in the last 11 years. The Rays bullpen leads the majors with 240.1 IP their 229 relief apps trail only Joe Maddon s Cubs (230) in the majors and put them on pace for a club-record 523 (510 in 2009).
