Records for both speed and competition have been established at Talladega, including the fastest-ever 500 -mile race, won by Mark Martin on May 10, 1997, at an average speed of 188.354 mph. The world stock car record was also established at Talladega in 1987 by Bill Elliott when he posted a speed of 212.809 in qualifying for the Aarons 499. Built at a cost of more than four million dollars, the track first opened as Alabama International Motor Speedway in September 1969. With plenty of room to expand, Talladega has done just that. It now boasts a seating capacity of 143,231. The track offers van tours to visitors daily during working hours except on days of racing, testing and special events. Located near Talladega Superspeedway there are several Motorsports attractions including the Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum and the Talladega- Texaco Walk of Fame. The Motorsports Hall of Fame, a Museum, is located at Talladega Superspeedway. The Talladega-Texaco Walk of Fame is located at Davey Allison Memorial Park in downtown Talladega. The park is a tribute to the late Davey Allison. Checklist of Useful Items Scanner Radio Earplugs Seat Cushion Sunglasses Cap or Hat Clear Tote Bag Lawn Chair Tailgate items Sun Screen Rain Gear Cooler NASCAR has announced a new championship format for 2014 that will put a greater emphasis on winning races all season long, and expand the current Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field to 16 drivers. Details are below: A victory in one of the first 26 races likely will guarantee a driver a berth in the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The Chase field is expanded from 12 to 16 drivers, with those drivers advancing to what now will be known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase Grid. The number of championship drivers in contention for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship will decrease after every three Chase races, from 16 to start in the Chase Grid; 12 after Chase race No. 3; eight after Chase race No. 6; and four after Chase race No. 9. The first three races of the Chase (27-29) will be known as the Challenger Round; races 30-32 will be known as the Contender Round; races 33-35 will be the Eliminator Round and race No. 36 will be the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. A win by a championship-eligible driver in any Chase race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next Chase round. Four drivers will enter the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship with a chance for the Cup, with the highest finisher among those four capturing the prestigious NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title. 13 14

Talladega/Atlanta Local Points of Interest Talladega s name and origin can be traced back to the 1800 s when American Indians occupied the territory. By the early 1800 s settlers had arrived and established a pioneer fort. In November of 1813, the settlement was attacked by Indians. General Andrew Jackson and his men came to the fort s aid, defeating the Creek Indians at the Battle of Talladega. The city of Talladega was incorporated in 1834 in the Appalachian foothills, thus making the community one of Alabama s oldest inland towns. Antebellum and early 20th century homes located throughout the community are testimony to Talladega s proud history. Today Talladega is home to one of the fastest and most competitive motorsports facilities in the world...the Talladega Superspeedway. And as if the speedway itself wasn t enough of a draw, the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum is located in the city of Talladega as well. Key displays include cars driven by NASCAR motorsports legends Richard Petty, Fireball Roberts, Bobby Allison, Marty Robbins and Bobby Isaac. The April 2006 issue of Southern Living Magazine featured Talladega Superspeedway as one of the 40 Best Southern Experiences. The article was titled 40 Things Every Southerner Ought To Do. Editors cast a wide geographical net for this article and Talladega Superspeedway was the only track to make the list. In downtown Talladega, a track-shaped walk of fame is the centerpiece of a park where some of Alabama s greatest are honored.
