Lakewood took it s opening drive and marched down the field 64 yards in eleven plays before settling for a 42 yard field goal by Randy Anaya to take a 3-0 lead. That score stood until early in the second quarter when Lakewood s defense forced a turnover on a strip and score play to take a 10-0 lead. Later in the second quarter, the Cougars scored their final touchdown on a 17 yard pass completion from Blake Watts to Eric Murray. Lakewood took that 17 point cushion into the locker room at the half. The Knight s, although behind, were not finished however. After being out scored and out gained in the first half, the big plays in the second half belonged to King s. In all purpose yards, King s outgained Lakewood 2 to 1 and they outscored the home team 14-0. Nick Severson got the fireworks started when he took the kickoff that began the third quarter down the sideline in front of the Knight s bench 94 yards before being forced out of bounds at the Lakewood 1 yard line. On King s first offensive play, Koa Wilkins got the Knight s on the scoreboard on a lead play up the middle. Lucas Swanson added the conversion to cut Lakewood s lead to 10 points. The two teams played what could best be described as a field position chess match with Lakewood having the better field position. At the end of the third period however, Lakewood gave up that advantage. Leading by 10 points and facing 4th and 5 at midfield, the Cougars gambled by running Anaya on a fake punt. Knights stopped the punter The three yards short of the first down. In the 4th quarter, King s scored again on a Wilkins 14 yard run with two minutes remaining. The Knights got the ball one more time with less than a minute remaining and no timeouts but the comeback effort fell short as Wilkins was sacked on the final play of the game. With the loss the Knight s record fell to 7-2. King s will open up Tri-District play this Friday at Woolsey Stadium against Eatonville of the Nisqually League in a winner to state game. Kick-off will be at 7 p.m.

The plan had been to win the field position game, to force more turnovers than Lakewood and have a lead. In those three departments, King s had gone 0 and 3. They had played most of the game in their own end of the field, they had turned the ball over and they were down 17-0. The average team when faced with these circumstances folds, packs up their tents and lives to fight another day. The King s Knights aren t average though, they re something different and the other night, Defensive Coordinator Kyle Wilkins helped them find out just what that was. After Coach Shapiro had covered the offensive adjust- ments he turned over the team to Wilkins. Wilkins reminded them that one of the things they had talked about all week was that this was going to be a game that would last all four quarters and that there would be adversity. There are two kinds of people in this world, he said. There are sheep and there are wolves. Sheep take what the world gives them and give in to it. Wolves though, take adversity and stay the course. He looked at several of the seniors, I know you guys are wolves. Well, it s time to rally the pack! He proceeded to talk about attitude adjustments and then the Knight s took the field. In the second half they played like wolves. Nick Severson returned the opening kickoff 94 yards to set up a touchdown. The defense shut out the Cougar s offense and limited their effectiveness. They stopped the Cougars on a 4th and 5 situation when the Cougars ran a fake punt. Offensively, the Knights just kept battling making the most of what they were given. With just over two minutes remaining in the game, they scored again, cutting the lead to just three points. In the end, although the Knight s comeback effort fell short they did prove two things. They proved that they were wolves and could play like wolves. They also proved something else though. They proved they were a playoff caliber team. Playoff caliber teams are wolves and on paper they don t look much different than average teams. They are different though, especially when they are behind by lots of points. Unlike normal teams, they don t believe it when the scoreboard tells them that they can t come back, that they're too far behind. They keep battling and they find ways to get back in the game and win. That was King s the other night. Even before the coaching staff talked to them about attitude, they believed they were still in that game. All that Shapiro and Wilkins did was remind them of it. And in the final minute, they believed that they were going to be able to come back and score to either force overtime or win. It makes sense though. They re wolves.

The EMAK Report: Down on the Farm: J.V. Knights finish 8-1 with big win at home By Sam Roach At Woolsey Stadium last Monday, the J.V. Knights defeated Lakewood 9-8 to finish first place among the junior varsity teams in the Cascade Conference. In a game that mirrored the varsity game played just three days earlier, the two teams were evenly matched and the game morphed into a defensive battle. Lakewood scored their only touchdown midway through the second quarter and converted the extra point using a reverse pitch pass to take an 8-0 lead into the intermission. Throughout the game, the King s coaching staff felt they had an advantage in the passing game with their wide receivers matched up against the Cougars secondary. For most of the game however Lakewood s defensive backs were up to the task until the final play of the third quarter when Alex Thiel corralled a tipped pass from Corey Kispert and ran into the end zone to cut the Cougar s lead 8-6. Early in the 4th quarter, King s recovered a Cougar fumble on the Lakewood 8. After running Jackson Whitaker twice into the center of the line and surrendering a sack on Kispert, King s took the lead for good on a Jack Van Dyke field goal that split the uprights. With the win, the J.V. Knights finished their season with an 8-1 record and won the undisputed championship of the Cascade Conference.
