The Washington Figure Skating Club Entries Entries must be U.S. postmarked no later than January 2, 2009. Late entries will be accepted at the discretion of the Competition Committee. Refunds will be granted if the Committee eliminates an event. Except as stated herein, the competition will be conducted according to the rules set forth in the 2009 Official USFS Rulebook. Registration Desk The registration desk will open Saturday morning 15 minutes before the first practice and during the scheduled events. The posting on the official bulletin board at Ashburn Ice House and on the WFSC web site, WFSC.net, of notices, changes or announcements shall be considered sufficient notice to competitors. Announces The Eighth Annual New Year s Invitational An All-Adult Non-Qualifying Competition February 7 & 8, 2009 At Ashburn Ice House Ashburn, Virginia Sanctioned by United States Figure Skating I. General Information Eligibility All competitors must be members in good standing of a club having membership in USFS. A competitor may also enter as an individual member of USFS or as a member of a probationary club provided that entry is accompanied by a signed certification by the skater that he or she is properly qualified to participate in the event(s) entered. Skaters may compete in as many disciplines as qualified by test level and age but may compete in only one event per discipline. To clarify, Don t Go it Alone, Centennial Dance, Solo Dance and Dance events are considered separate disciplines. January 2, 2009 (close of entries) will determine age and test classification. Schedule An updated Schedule will be posted on WFSC.net as available. To receive a tentative schedule of events by U.S. Mail include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your application. Age Groups (new for 2009) Group I Group II Group III Group IV Group V 21 to 30 years 31 to 40 years 41 to 50 years 51 to 60 years 61 years & over Groups I through V may be combined and apply to all events except Dance team events. Proof of age is required for all entrants. A copy of birth certificate, passport, driver s license or similar proof of age is considered acceptable; however, the Competition Committee reserves the right to require additional documentation. Music must be on CDs labeled with name, club, event, and running time if possible include music title have backup music available and quickly accessible Turn in music at least one hour prior to your event. Music may be picked up at the registration desk after each event. Rink Events will be held at Ashburn Ice House in Ashburn, Virginia. The rink is 200 by 85 (NHL) with rounded corners and a hockey barrier. I

II. Composition of Events FREE SKATING EVENTS All level definitions are as stated in the 2009 Official USFS Rulebook. Adult Masters FS Must meet the qualifications for Championship Masters or Adult Gold Free Skating. Music not to exceed 3:40 Adult Gold FS Must meet the qualifications for Adult Gold or Adult Silver Free Skating. Music not to exceed 2:40 Adult Silver FS Must meet the qualifications for Adult Silver or Adult Bronze Free Skating. No double jumps Music not to exceed 2:10 Adult Bronze FS Must not qualify for higher than Adult Bronze Free Skating and may qualify by passing the Adult Pre Bronze FS Test or Preliminary FS Test. No Axels, no double jumps Music not to exceed 1:50 Adult Pre Bronze FS Must not qualify for the Adult Bronze FS or higher level. No test or Pre Bronze FS test or Pre Preliminary FS test is permitted. No Axels, no double jumps. Music not to exceed 1:50 Interpretive Criteria Interpretive programs shall consist of a variety of skating moves and elements selected for their value in enhancing the skater s interpretation of the music. Judges may consider costumes reflective of character and theme. The judges will award marks for Skating Technique and for Presentation. In marking Skating Technique, these aspects will be considered: the ease, flow, glide, sureness, power and depth of edges; the ability to vary the speed and direction; innovative moves; the utilization of space and ice coverage; and style. In marking Presentation, these aspects will be considered: the interpretation of the music and rhythm; the skater s musical timing and understanding of the phrasing of music; the use of the entire body to develop musical expression; creativity; choreography; variations in tempo, tension, emotion, and movements; the entertainment value to the audience. NO PROPS allowed on the ice. PAIRS EVENTS Level definitions are as stated in the 2009 Official USFS Rulebook. We will reserve the option of combining adjacent levels with the consent of the entrants. INTERPRETIVE EVENTS Vocal music permitted. Music not to exceed 1:40 Adult Masters Interpretive Must meet the requirements of the Adult Masters FS event in this announcement or must have passed at least one Pre Gold Dance Test. Adult Interpretive Must meet the requirements of the Adult Bronze FS or Adult Silver FS events in this announcement, and may have passed no higher than the Silver Dance test. DON T GO IT ALONE The Interpretive event for two or three skaters, no Axel/no double jumps/no overhead lifts, minimum requirements of the Pre Bronze Freestyle event. MOVES IN THE FIELD EVENTS Any dance test requirements or restrictions refer to the Standard or Adult level completed. Adult Masters MIF Must meet the requirement for Masters FS in this announcement, or have passed Intermediate MIF or Pre Gold Dance Test. Moves: JRM #3b F & B Inside Rockers JM #3 Back Power 3 Turns Adult Gold MIF Must meet the requirement for Gold FS in this announcement, or have passed Gold MIF or Juvenile MIF or Silver Dance Test; may not have passed Novice MIF. Moves: AGM # 6 Brackets AGM # 5 Inside Slide Chassé Pattern II

Adult Silver MIF Must meet requirement for Silver FS in this announcement, or have passed Silver MIF or Pre Silver Dance Test; may not have passed Intermediate MIF nor Gold MIF nor Pre Gold Dance Test. Moves: ASM #4 FI-BO 3 Turns in the Field ASM #6 F & B Power Change of Edge Pulls Adult Bronze MIF May not have passed Silver MIF nor Pre Juvenile MIF nor Silver Dance test. Moves: APBM #3 F & B Crossovers ABM #5 Five Step Mohawk Sequence Adult Pre Bronze MIF May have passed no higher than Pre Bronze MIF nor Pre Preliminary MIF nor Pre Bronze Dance Test. Moves: APBM # 3(a) Forward Crossovers APBM #2 Basic Consecutive Edges (F & B) DANCE EVENTS All level definitions are as stated in the 2009 Official USFS Rulebook. Teams may skate up one level. All events are final round. Adult Gold Dance Viennese Waltz, Silver Samba Adult Pre-Gold Dance Tango, Blues Adult Silver Dance Tango, 14 Step, European Waltz * Adult Pre-Silver 10 Fox, European Waltz, 14 Step* Adult Bronze Dance Fiesta Tango, Willow Waltz, Swing Dance* Adult Preliminary Dance Canasta Tango, Rhythm Blues* Adult Centennial Dance May be entered as a 2nd Dance Event or with different partner. American Waltz, Rocker Foxtrot, Tango* *May be skated in flights of 2, 3, or 4. Open Free Dance Each partner must qualify for either the Adult Pre Gold or Adult Gold Dance events in this announcement. See 2009 Official USFS Rulebook for Adult FD description. SOLO DANCE EVENTS Competitors in the Solo Dance events may compete at the Dance Test level, Standard or Adult, that he or she has partially passed, completed, or at one level higher than completed. No test requirements for Pre Bronze Solo. Pre Gold-Gold Solo: Blues & Viennese Silver Solo 14 Step, Tango Pre Silver Solo 10 Fox, European Waltz* Bronze Solo Fiesta Tango, Willow Waltz* Pre Bronze Solo Cha Cha, Dutch Waltz* *May be skated in flights of 2, 3 or 4 Ties In Compulsory Dance events, ties will be broken by Total Ordinals; if still tied, the last dance will break the tie. COMPULSORY MOVES EVENTS Compulsory Moves will be skated on half ice surface without music. Levels correspond to FS events as defined in this announcement. Elements may be skated in any order. Adult Masters CM An Axel double jump combination, a double Salchow, a layback or back scratch spin, circular step sequence. Time not to exceed 1:20 Adult Gold CM An Axel, a three jump sequence containing a Lutz and half or single jumps, a camel spin, a circular step sequence. Time not to exceed 1:20 Adult Silver CM A loop-loop combination, BO spiral to a Lutz jump, a sit spin, any F edge spiral, straight-line step sequence. Time not to exceed 1:20 Adult Bronze CM A half Lutz-FI 3 turn-toe loop sequence, a loop jump, a camel spin, waltz 8 (1full pattern), a sustained glide (any spiral or hydro blade move). Time not to exceed 1:00 Adult Pre-Bronze CM A waltz jump-mazurka-waltz jump sequence, a toe loop, forward scratch spin, FI Mohawk on each foot, any spiral. Time not to exceed 1:00 III

SPIN EVENTS Spins, just spins. This event will be conducted in a manner similar to Compulsory Figures events of olde. The three spins skated by each entrant will be warmed up and performed separately. Judges will reward speed, duration and quality of position. The Open combination spin is truly open with creativity encouraged and variations optional. Levels are the same as the corresponding FS events as defined in this announcement. Adult Masters Spins 1) Flying camel spin, variations optional 2) Sit spin, variations optional 3) Open combination spin Adult Gold Spins 1) Layback(Ladies), upright(men), variations optional 2) Any flying spin, no variations 3) Open combination spin Adult Silver Spins 1) Camel Spin, variations optional 2) Layback(Ladies), F scratch(men), no variations 3) Open combination spin Adult Bronze Spins 1) Scratch to back scratch spin 2) Broken leg or sit spin, no variations 3) Combination Spin with 2 positions, change of foot and variations optional Team Event (New This Year) The team of 3 to 5 skaters will field a member to perform the following elements: 1) Split Jump 2) Camel Spin (variations optional) 3) Spiral on any edge held at least 5 seconds 4) Straight line step sequence 5) Axel jump No team member may perform more than 2 elements. For every team member at Masters level there must be a member at Bronze level or below. III. Entries and Registration Entries must be postmarked on or before January 2, 2009. For dance teams please mail entries in the same envelope. Entry Fees $80 for first singles, interpretive, or solo event; $45 for second such event; $45 for each partner of pair or dance team; $60.00 for Don t Go It Alone, Team Event.
