June 2018 Editor: Tom Raschke tomraschke50@gmail.com Club Web Site: http://www.yaharafishingclub.org Trolling for Panfish by Pat Westberg Pat uses bullet bobbers for trolling. They are a directional bobber with a hole in front and in back to set direction. Can also use them as a slip bobber. They are just like a mini planer board. They drift off to the side of the boat and allow you to cover a much broader area. Come in 2 sizes, small and large. Check them out at BulletBobbers.com. Can use with just about any bait, i.e. tubes, jigs, live bait, etc. Can use 2" Gulp instead of crappie minnow. Stays on hook a lot better. Notes by John Kanvik Pat trolls at.8 to 1.2 mph. Often, when he slows down or stops and thus the bait is falling, that is when the fish will hit. Works best in calmer water. The larger size is better when there are a few waves. Uses for fishing white bass on Mendota. Uses chartreuse shad body, Mr. Twister, etc. Trolls at 4 mph. He said he has tried Off Shore Boards and Yellow Bird planer boards but they required some modifications. Pat mostly fishes the Madison lakes. He also uses a Charlie Brewer slider rig for fishing brush piles. Designed to fall between the branches without getting snagged. See YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u79vogw0pba When he finished answering questions, he switched topics and demonstrated how he creates a "quick set rig". Next Club Meeting June 13th, 2018, Time: 6:00 pm, On the Water Meeting Meet at Warner Park boat launch on Lake Mendota 1017 Woodward Dr, Madison, WI 53704 Pizza will be served by the club a $5.00 donation is requested, BYOB. Members are encouraged to bring their boats to accommodate those who will need a ride. Jack Hurst will go over information at the meeting of spots to find white bass if you want to fish for them. If we are going to cancel the on the water meeting for Wednesday Gard will make the decision by noon on Tuesday and it will be sent out via the YFC web page and/or an email. If our On the Water meeting is canceled due to weather we will hold it on Thursday. If by any chance that we have two bad days in a row we will then cancel the meeting altogether until the next meeting. 1 Bullet Bobbers In this issue: Kids Fishing Day Page 2. Big Bay De Noc Page 3. Kids Fishing Day 2018 From Facebook: Hi everyone. I would like to thank all those members that showed up yesterday for the kids fishing day. Without all the members who showed up we would not be able to do this event each and every year. We ended up giving away 262 rods and reels and all of the tackle boxes. For members who couldn't make it this time, try to make it to the kids ice fishing day in January. For those that were there yesterday who took pictures please post them to our Facebook site so we can use them for promoting the kids fishing day in the future, or send them to Tom Raschke. Those members who ordered hats, tee shirts, and sweatshirts and were not at the kids day, please contact me so we can make arrangements to get your orders to you. I will have them at the on-the-water meeting on Wednesday, June 13 at Warner Park. And one last thing for all that do volunteer, don't forget the date Sunday, September 23 for YFC 2nd annual club appreciation picnic at Lake Mendota County Park. Big Bay De Noc, 2018 Yahara Fishing Club Our 5 th year on this fantastic outing really paid off during Memorial Day weekend! The weather was absolutely perfect escaping the heat in Madison to upper 60 s, sunny with light wind in the UP. The fishing was also spectacular with 177 fish total in my boat this year with plenty over 20 and one fish at 21. First timers Greg Belanger and his family caught 111 fish and other club members caught more and less than this but everyone had a great time! Jim Pankratz I went up with Dave Dockus and John Pribek. Although fishing was slower than the Tue-Ths after Memorial Day, we caught fish every day and once boated 30 fish in two hours. Club members know of a lot of specific locations and recommended tackle. For those thinking about the trip for next year, it is a pretty good deal. John and I shared a room with two twin beds for $62.00 a night. The Nahma in provides a cold breakfast, sandwiches and snacks for lunch, and has great draft beer This year we had the bonus of paranormal investigators filming and recording the halls one of the nights. 2018 YFC Outings Yahara Fishing Club Big Green Lake: June 16. Time: 7-8 AM start. Fish as long as you want to. Launch: Governor Dodge Memorial Park on the southwest side of BGL on Cty K. An alternative launch is Sunset Park on the east end of BGL on Cty A. BGL is the deepest natural lake in Wisconsin with a maximum depth of 237 feet. It is both a cold water and a warm water fishery. Species of fish such as lake trout, brown trout, cisco, musky, LM bass, SMbass, walleye, bluegill, crappie, and perch can be found. The following are some locations, methods and presentations by which to fish BGL: We can fish for trout, ciscoes, musky, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleyes and panfish. We have a lot of specific information to give you for each species if you sign-up for this outing. Local outing June 23 on either Lake Waubesa, Monona or Mendota: We send out the lake and location to you through email after our club meeting next week. Lake MI charter fishing outing in Port Washington July/August: Currently we have 12 members signed up for 2 coho charters in June. Looking to chase down the mighty king salmon? We have members wanting to go and you can go with them in July or August. This is a well guided charter with club member and charter Captain John Iverson. We need to book a trip fast as spots are filling up. Trips are available during the week and weekends. Let me know if you re interested. Up to 6 people on each trip are possible with many hour options. Check out www.iversonsportfishing.com for more information. Eagle Lake Onatario Canada: We have 3 great resorts to choose from at great rates! All kinds of trips are available including a bus trip. After speaking to owner Jeff Moreau of Temple Bay Lodge and the Expo we could do the ultimate club trip with our own boats for as little as $250 a person for a group of 6 or the ridiculously low rate of $167 per person for a group of 9. A week in Canada at these prices is pure awesome so what are you waiting for?! Help create YOUR outings for our club! Let me know what you want to fish for and where and I will try to set an outing up. Better yet you can volunteer to lead an outing. Below is a calendar of likely and suggested outings for 2018. Survival of Released Walleye in Summer Months In-Fisherman recently reviewed two studies done on walleye release, with survival measured five days after release. Here is a summary of the findings: 1)Walleyes held in aerated live wells for 8 hours then handled to simulate tournament conditions: 54 water 85% survival 64 water 72% survival 75 water 0% survival 2) Walleyes released immediately after capture: 54 water high survival 64 water high survival 75 water 30% survival At 64 lake temperature survival was improved by cooling the live well water and significantly decreased by warming the live well water, by 7 up or down. But at 75 lake temperature cooling the live well did not help and still had 0% survival. Obviously for those who fish walleye in our summer months, fish to be released should be handled as little and as gently as possible, and perhaps unhooked while still in the water. It also calls into question the effectiveness of slot limits where most fish are released. Phil James Ken Terrill below the trestle on Lake Wisconsin this May. This stretch of railroad track goes from Waunakee, crosses the river at Merrimack, and continues along the shore of Devil s lake on the way to Baraboo. 5
