The Soaring Eagle OSS Newspaper Edition 1 January 2018 Peter Pan by: Morgan Wiehe and Sophie Elber In March some of the fourth and fifth graders will put on a show called Peter Pan. Auditions were in November and many people tried out. Only four or five people will be crew members and not all who tried out will be in the cast. Mrs. Rymer teaches the songs and Mrs. Smith teaches the dances. Everyone will see it in school once on March 13th and will have the chance to see it at night on March 15th, March 16th, and March 17th. If you are in kindergarten to third grade, in a few years you will have the opportunity to be a part of the school play, too.. Will Peter Pan Fly? The Newspaper Club is looking for 5th graders to help with the School Newspaper! Interview with Max Kern Our School President by: Paige Greenstein and Sophie Logan How do you like your job? I think it s fun because people recognize me as prez of the school. What will you do for the school? I am going to make everyone happy, and I am gonna go with the flow. What was going through your mind when you went up to deliver your speech? Don t show being nervous. Read clearly. Who influenced you? My parents. What advice would you give to other kids? Do what you like, no matter who tells you what. What made you want to become President of the school? It would be cool. What s your favorite part of the school? The last day of school, because you will have a lot of fun. Were you surprised when you won? A little bit, but not really, because I knew people were voting for me. Looking For a Book to Read? by: Ryan Ireland I just finished reading this book called Wonder by R.J Palacio. I thought it was one of the best books I have ever read, but I would definitely recommend this for older kids (third grade through fifth grade). The book is about a kid named August Pullman, who has a deformed face. To make matters worse there is an incredibly mean bully, at school, named Julian. He calls Auggie terrible names like: freak, monster and orc. Over the course of this book you learn the story from different people s perspectives. That includes: August, Via, Justin, Miranda and Jack Will. Don t worry if you don t know these characters, you will meet them in the book. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I hope you do too! When you get a chance, you should read this book!

Soaring Sports by: Max Kern and James Kapitanyan It was a huge year in sports. Including upsets, dramatic finishes and crazy outcomes. Speaking of crazy outcomes, the Houston Astros won the World Series in a game 7 win. The Astros were away, and still pulled a win. Basketball was also amazing. Lonzo Ball was the youngest basketball player to get a triple-double EVER!. The big question in football, Do the cowboys need Dak Prescott more than Ezekiel Elliott? If you think you know the answer, talk to the president or write your answer on a piece of paper and hand it to Sophie Elber, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper. In college football Baker Mayfield wins the Heisman Award. Did he deserve it or do you think that someone else deserved it? Another big thing in college football is the rankings. #1 is Clemson. #2 is Oklahoma. #3 is Georgia. #4 is Alabama. If you have different rankings, then come to your president or Sophie Elber the editor-inchief of the Soaring Eagle. In college basketball Unranked Boston College upsets number one, Duke! It was crazy! BC hasn t beat Duke since 2009! Everybody exploded with surprise. Finally, the news you have been waiting for! Geno Smith starts as Giants QB instead of Eli Manning in a football game! Now remember that Geno Smith was traded and always was throwing pick sixes, Also Eli broke his streak of 210 consecutive games. The coach of the Giants, Ben McAdoo was horrible for benching Eli. I am very glad the the Giant fired him because, in my opinion, he was the worst coach ever. Georgia vs Alabama, for the College National championship. Who did you want to win? Alabama Wins! Long Day? By: Johnny Kaiser and Kaleb Huang

A special thanks to everyone who participated in the Soaring Eagle s first issue! These brownies taste great with ice cream! Fudge Brownies by: Sophie Logan and Paige Greenstein Ingredients 1 ¼ cups sugar 3 large eggs 1 cup flour ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup cocoa 4 tablespoons unsalted butter ¼ cup heavy cream 8 oz bittersweet chocolate Directions You might want to do this with a parent s help. 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a big bowl, whisk together sugar and eggs. In a another bowl, whisk together flour, salt and cocoa. 2. In a medium ovenproof non stick skillet bring butter and cream to a simmer on medium. Add chocolate and reduce to medium low. Cook, stirring constantly, until chocolate has melted for about 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. 3. Add chocolate mixture to sugar mixture and whisk until blended, fold in flour mixture and add into skillet. 4.Bake for 40 minutes. Stick a toothpick through the center, if toothpick comes out clean, brownies are done. If not stick it back in the oven for about 5-10 minutes. ENJOY!! Sky Zone By: Ella Arnold, adapted by: Ryan Ireland and Peter Baek I had gone to a trampoline park called Sky Zone recently, and I personally thought it was really fun. I enjoyed it a lot. I have many reasons why I love this trampoline park, but I ll keep it to just 2 reasons. The first reason why I love this place so much, is because of the easy check in. You can self check in, and it s so easy! All you have to do is get your socks from the desk, and then head to the self-check in machines. Then you need to enter your name, and your children s name(s), and a bit of other information, and boom! You re finished! The machine prints out your wristbands, and you can go play! My parents had no trouble with this machine, and it was very easy to get our tickets and socks. (The socks are important because they have a material on the bottom that makes it harder to slip!) My second reason is the activities. There is trampoline basketball, trampoline dodgeball, free jump areas and, there s a foam pit, even there is volleyball pit. The dodge ball is awesome because there is a whole area devoted to the game! You get split up into teams and they give you foam balls to throw. The foam pit is also fun because you can do a black flip and a front flip into the pit. When you are tired there is a snack store. So, eat up and go up to Sky Zone! Sky Zone is the place to be for fun!
