September 2014 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE FORDS UNLIMITED CAR CLUB P.O. BOX 240201 BALLWIN, MO 63024 A s I start on this newsletter, it s early August. It s hard to believe that I am working on the September issue already. Wow, how the time flies. It s been kind of a crazy year. It seemed that most of our late spring and early summer events always had either a chance of rain or actual rain. It threatened rainy weather most of the week before our show but it stayed dry and not too hot for a late July date. In general, it wasn t nearly as hot at the most of the shows that we participated in this year. Although our show attendance was down somewhat this year, it really wasn t that far off from our average. If you count the rain show and the show held in the year of excessive heat, we averaged about 227 entries, so 214 wasn t really that bad. Without those two dates, we averaged over 240 entries. It just seemed like a let down after last years 282 attendance. The show was truly a great success in so many ways. We increased our classes to 49, yet still sold every class sponsorship, along with the Sinclair sponsorship. The contributions of EPC and Northern Tool added to our success. It s always so neat to see all of our members jump right into work the morning of the show. The 2014 Board of Directors Syl Biermann 636-394-5003 Paula Goodrich 636-625-1064 Jack Greiwe-636-300-1221 Dan Kelly-314-276-2288 Rich Sutorius 636-634-0379 Secretary-Cindy Ahrens Editor Bob Layton 636-397-4487 or e-mail mickie6t6@hotmail.com Publisher-Bill & Barb Giese Web Master-Scott Lewis Keirsten McDaniel www.fordsunlimited.com journeymen (and women) know what to do and so many of our newest members are willing to help in anyway. Even though we eliminated stuffing goody bags, we still had a great turnout at our Saturday pre-show BBQ with over 45 of our members and families in attendance. The vast majority of our participants appreciated our new split voting. It really cut down on the walking and sped up getting the ballots turned in. Lets be honest, we show our cars to be seen by other owners and spectators. For some, trophies are an afterthought. If you were too busy to notice, we have so many spectators, parking is sometimes a problem. We still have plenty to do to finish up this year. We have many events planned this month including the start up of our Toy Drive. We have our very popular Fall Color Tour in October, nominations for new officers along with other events still in the planning. We will finish our year with our toy donations to Toys for Tots and with our Awards Banquet that will be held in January. Stay tuned. N ormally our Fall Color Tour includes a BBQ but this year we are changing things up. On October 19th, we will take the scenic route to Cuba Missouri for the annual Cuba Fest and finish the day with a trip to Bob s Gasoline Alley. After touring the facility, we will be dinning there also. The cost is $11 per person and the food is all homemade. We will post meeting location and time in the October newsletter.

T he Show Me Mustang Club held their all Ford show at Pundmann Ford in St. Charles on August 2nd. As always, nice weather brings out lots of cars and that day was no exception. Our club brought 26 cars and trucks and won club participation which we donated back to their charity. The awards were listed as gold, silver and bronze. Eighteen of our members did manage to take home a plaque. Members in attendance include Reg Stockwell (bronze), John Bonness, Dave Sgroi (bronze), Dan Tanner, Paula Goodrich (bronze), Vern Anderson (gold), Dan Kelly (silver), Matt Simms (silver), John Sullivan (bronze), Jerry Grimmer (silver), Mark Plackemeier (bronze), Ken Farrar (gold), Mark Carey (bronze), Jake Turnipseed (bronze), Syl Biermann (bronze), Jim Biermann (gold), Bill Bauer (silver), Jack Greiwe, Josh Johnson (silver), Steve Dennis, Brian Burger (gold), Duck and Brigitte Steavenson (silver), Willy and Mary Cole (silver), Burt Pennington (gold), Bart McNail (bronze), and Bob Layton (photo not shown).

S hown to the left is Ron Schodroski presenting plaque to Dave Sinclair III, thanking Dave Sinclair Ford for their years of support as the major sponsor of our car show. Also shown is board of directors member, Dan Kelly to the left and Terry Koch on the right. The Sinclair sponsorship is vital to the success of our show. T his is you first notice on dues. Dues are $20 per year and $10 for a second member with the same address and $5 for a third with only one newsletter per household. Please make your check out to Fords Unlimited and mail to Fords Unlimited, P.O. Box 240201, Ballwin, Missouri 63024. S andy Carey has been crafting this car show shirt quilt. We will be raffling it off until the end of the year and the proceeds will go to a charity that has not yet be determined. We will be selling chances at our meetings or we can handle by mail if necessary. We will have more details next month. Listed below are the points standings as of our August membership meeting. 1st. Article and photo by Syl Biermann T his garage fire was the result of a power outage in a residential block in Ballwin. Having experience outages frequently, this young couple purchased a generator to run the TV and a refrigerator in their detached garage. Unfortunately, they had the generator in the garage to dampen the sound. When it malfunctioned, they did not know that there was a fire. By that time that they did, it was too late. The contents of the garage included two 1966 Mustangs. The convertible was owned since his high school days. The owner intends to remove the light bar in the grill of the convertible, clean it up and make it a memorial to the memory of his beloved convertible. The coupe had a built up 289 with a 4-speed and a 9-inch rear end. Fortunately, the house was undamaged and there were no injuries. There were also two 1931 Ford trucks undergoing restoration. The cars were insured for a stated value so the owner was confident that his loss wouldn t be a monetary one, at least not on the vehicles. However all of his tools, auto memorabilia, old signs, car and truck parts and an extensive license plate collection were all a total loss. Only one of the Ford pickups will be salvageable. This very worthwhile organization also received a check from Sinclair Ford from the monies collected at their display held at their dealership in June.

A lthough most think that the Ford Mustang was named after the horse, the designers at Ford were really thinking about the WWII P51 Mustang fighter, the best fighter during the war. Most Ford Mustang owners would relish the chance to have a photo of their ride taken next to this classic warbird. Thanks to Dan Kelly, several of our members got a last minute chance to have our Mustangs photographed with a P51 at the Creve Coeur Airport. This plane was somewhat unusual as it was a two-seater used for reconnaissance and training near the end of the war. The P51 and the bombers at the airport were owned by Collings Foundation. Thanks Dan!

W hile at the Mid America Nationals in Tulsa, club member Jack Anderson was instrumental in the raising of funds for the JDRF. He received this nice thank you letter. Note who the letter is from. We will hold a car show meeting on Wednesday, September 24th at the Dorsett Sybergs. If you would like to see the workings of our car show, this would be a great start. All are welcome. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm. Jerry Grimmer gave a nice presentation at our August meeting of the retractable car show that was held a couple of months ago. These rare and sometimes difficult cars were built from 1957-59. Board member, Dan Kelly, took all of the show photo s. Great job guys. We have been asked to be judges for the EPC car show that will be held on October 11th in St. Charles. This is a great opportunity to learn how to judge. No experience is necessary. Please contact Syl Biermann if you are interested. We need at least fifteen members to be available for this. Club member Merle Bone s family has been going through some tough times. His wife recently had back surgery and his daughter suffered a ruptured colon and is going though multiple surgeries. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bone family. There is no coverage of the Purina Farms car show as the weather kept your editor and most of our members away. We will try again next year. The 50-50 winner at our August meeting was Jerry Grimmer. Jerry went home with an additional $37. C lub member, Don Branson, is recovering from the serious burns that he had received many months ago. Unfortunately, other health problems have slowed down his recovery, but his spirits are high. He has noted that he really appreciates the thoughts and cards. Get well soon Don. I t s hard to believe, but it s time to start our toy drive. Starting this month, we will donate the club s half of the 50-50 drawings at our membership meetings to our Christmas Toy Drive campaign to benefit Toys for Tots. We will continue this through December. We will also be collecting toys and cash donations at our membership meetings through December. Since we get a discount on the toy purchases, it may be easier to donate the cash but either will be appreciated. Toys must be new and unwrapped. I t s that time of the year again. We will be taking nominations for new officers for the upcoming year. Current members, Syl Biermann, Jack Greiwe and Dan Kelly will finish their term on December 31st. Members Paula Goodrich and Rich Sutorius will serve another year. The new board members will serve a two year term. We would like to have at least four members run for the three openings. This is not a difficult job and you won t be asked to do anything that you are not comfortable with. All nominations must be in by October with the election held in November. Give it some thought. We were saddened to learn of the passing of Elva McNail, the mother of Bart McNail. Elva passed away on July 30th. Our condolences go out to Bart, his father. Ralph and family. This month we welcome nine new members: Don and Jackie Audrain. The Audrain s reside in Florissant. Don drives 1964 Falcon and was sponsored by Dan Kelly. Jack Scott.
