V omen 2006 Mountain est Tournament Notes March 7-11 Denver Page 2 Head Coach Regina Miller Regina Miller has accomplished what she was brought to Las Vegas to do in 1998 to resurrect and build the Lady Rebels back into one of the nation s premier programs. She has also led to the postseason for a school record five straight seasons. Despite an injury-filled season in 2004-05, Miller was able to guide the Lady Rebels to a 16-15 record and a trip to the NIT. That followed the 2003-04 team, that had one of the most successful campaigns in school history, as finished with a 26-8 record and advanced to its first-ever appearance in the NIT championship game. also set a new school record with 10 MC wins. Miller guided the 2002-03 Lady Rebel squad to a 17-12 mark and an appearance in the NIT finally broke back into the national scene after the Lady Rebels outstanding season in 2001-02, in which they earned their first NCAA Tournament berth since the 1994 season and their eighth all-time appearance. That year s squad posted a remarkable 23-8 overall record, one of the best seasons in school history, which also included a MC tournament runner-up finish. In 1999-2000, the North Carolina native also guided her team to an impressive 19-10 overall record and an appearance in the NIT. The previous two years, Miller led to back-to-back 17-win seasons after inheriting a squad that had only won four games in each of the previous three years. She turned her 1998-99 squad into the most improved team in Division I women s college basketball in just her first year at. On Dec. 9, 2000, she reached a personal milestone by collecting her 100th career victory against Eastern ashington. A victory over South Florida 74-61 on Dec. 21, 2003, marked her 100th win at. She currently holds the fourth best winning percentage among women s basketball coaches all-time with a 135-76 (.640) overall record. Miller came to after spending six seasons (1992-98) as the head coach at estern Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. hile at IU, she led the esterwinds to the 1995 Mid-Continent Conference regular season and tournament titles as well as an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For her efforts, she was honored as the 1995 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association s Coach of the Year. Coaching Career Conference Overall estern Illinois (6 yrs) 43-59 60-100 (8 yrs) 65-49 152-86 Total 108-108 212-186 in the Mountain est Championships The Lady Rebels enter the 2006 MC Tournament as the sixth seed for the first time in the seven-year history of the tournament. It will also be the second time has played in the 3-6 game, the last was as the third seed in a win over #6 BYU in the 2004 Tournament. This is the second straight year, and third overall has been the lower seed in its quarterfinal matchup, and won both of the first two contests. This is the third and final year the MC Tournament will be played in Denver, as the first four years it was held in s Thomas & Mack Center, and it will return there starting in 2007. actually has a better record playing in Denver though (2-2,.500) as compared to Las Vegas (3-4,.429). In the 2004 tournament, fifth-seeded took care of #4 yoming 64-59, helped by a 17-0 first half run, and a 16-point, 14-rebound double-double performance from RanDee Henry. In the semifinal game against third-seed New Mexico, the Lobos ended the game on a 13-4 run, and Sheena Moore s three-pointer at the buzzer was just off the mark in a 70-67 loss. In last year s tournament, #3 held off #6 BYU 60-57 in the quarterfinals behind a careerhigh 17 points from Kameca Simmons, and sealed the game when Henry caught an airball and laid it back in with 20-seconds to play. The Lady Rebels then held a 30-24 halftime lead over Utah, but the second-seeded Utes rallied for a 59-55 victory. and BYU met in the quarterfinals of the 2003 tournament, and despite a 24-point, 12- rebound performance from Sherry McCracklin (which earned her a spot on the all-tournament team), BYU s Erin Thorn hit a three-pointer with just four-tenths of a second to give the fifthseeded Cougars a 66-64 victory in overtime over fourth-seed. In the 2002 tournament, the fourth-seed Lady Rebels handed #5 Utah a 57-38 loss, and upset top-seeded Colorado State 72-58 in the semifinals, before falling to third-seed BYU 61-46 in the final. Both Linda Frohlich and Constance Jinks were named all-tournament. was the fifth-seed in the 2001 championships, and fell to #4 BYU 62-52 in the quarterfinals. In the first year of the MC Tournament, #5 held off #4 New Mexico 52-50 before falling to top-seeded Utah 67-65. Frohlich was an all-tournament selection in the 2000 championships. Players To atch It was expected that the combination of senior guard Sheena Moore, senior forward Sherry McCracklin and sophomore guard Sequoia Holmes would be the players to lead this season. However, two more players who have made their impact known this season as well are senior forward Nikki Hitchens and junior forward Kisha Lee. One of the most explosive scorers on the est Coast, Moore is in her second year at the point guard role but still leads in scoring with 13.3 ppg, seventh-best in the MC. Moore is also eighth in the league with 3.26 apg. McCracklin, the MC Defensive Player of the Year in 2003-04, missed last season with an Achilies injury but has returned for her final season, and is 11th in the conference in scoring (12.2 ppg) and seventh in rebounding (6.6 rpg). She is also fourth in the conference in blocks with 1.20 bpg. Perhaps the most athletic player in the MC, Holmes is an outstanding all-around player for the Lady Rebels. She is averaging 9.1 points (25th in the MC), 4.3 rebounds, 2.89 assists (12th), 2.22 steals (3rd) and 0.56 blocks for. A three-year starter for the Lady Rebels, Hitchens has really come on strong in the second half of the conference season. Over the past eight games, she has averaged 8.5 points and six rebounds, and posted her first double-double of the year. For the season, she is averaging 5.8 points and 4.3 rebounds, and is fifth on the team with 28 steals. Lee entered the year with a 3.0 career scoring average, but has posted double-figures in eight games and is fourth on the team in scoring at 7.1 ppg. She also averages 3.8 rpg, fifth-best on the squad, and is leads the league with a 55.1 field goal percentage. Seven MC Tournament Games To Be Televised The final three rounds of the 2006 Mountain est Conference omen s Basketball Championship will appear on television for the seventh straight year. CSTV will show the quarterfinals and semifinals, while ESPN2 will broadcast the championship game. The CSTV broadcasts will also be available live on the internet at both the conference (www.themwc.com) and s official website (Rebels.com). Conference Standards s overtime loss to TCU on March 4 sent the Lady Rebels to a sixth place finish in the regular season, breaking their streak of six-straight top-five finishes in the league. ith Colorado State posting an eighth place finish, New Mexico and Utah are now the only schools to finish in the

The biggest proof of that is that it took 17 games for a Lady Rebel to post a double-double, despite the team being near the top of the league in both scoring and rebounding. Faye Muller finished with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to post the first double-double of her career at Air Force on Jan. 25. Sherry McCracklin posted the second of the year for with 21 points and 16 rebounds against TCU on Feb. 2, while Nikki Hitchens recorded just the third double-double of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds at Utah on Feb. 22. Sheena Moore just missed a triple-double, and posted her second career doubledouble with 20 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds at TCU on March 4. Home Sweet Home The Lady Rebels are 46-12 all-time in the four-year-old Cox Pavilion and 93-27 in Las Vegas under eighth-year head coach Regina Miller. They are also 9-0 in the Thomas & Mack over the past two seasons. set a new Cox Pavilion attendance record this year with 1,690 in the game against BYU on Feb. 11, which is also the 14th-highest home crowd in history. Miller, Lady Rebels Earn Milestone ins s 74-57 victory over Colorado State on Feb. 18, 2006 in Las Vegas gave both the Lady Rebels and head coach Regina Miller milestone victories. ith the victory, became the 39th team in NCAA history to reach 600 games in its women s basketball program. The Lady Rebels own a 602-310 record over their 31 seasons of women s college basketball, and entering the 2005-06 season they were ranked 40th in the nation in all-time wins and 36th in winning percentage at.661. Miller also became the third coach in school history to reach 150 wins at, and accounts for 25% of the Lady Rebels all-time wins. She is now 152-86 over her eight years in Las Vegas. Blum Reaches 1,000 Long-time Lady Rebel play-by-play announcer Bob Blum recently hit a milestone of his own, as s game at yoming on Feb. 4 marked the 1,000th game he has broadcast. The Voice of the Lady Rebels for the past 19 seasons, Blum also counts among his 1,000 games several Runnin Rebels, football, baseball and even softball games. Impressive Defense In the win over TCU on Feb. 2, the Lady Rebels held the Lady Frogs to just 29.6% shooting, the second-straight game s opponent was held under 30% from the floor as New Mexico was just 28.3% from the floor on Jan. 28. That marked just the second time ever in its MC history held two straight conference opponents to under 30%, the last coming in the 2000-01 season (23.9% by Air Force on Jan. 20, and 29.2% by San Diego State on Jan. 27). Scoring Troubles In The Pit For the first time in 237 games, the Lady Rebels did not have a single player score in double figures in their 60-47 loss at #18 New Mexico on Jan. 28. Two players both scored nine points each for, Sequoia Holmes and Kameca Simmons. The last time did not have a player finish in double figures for points was during the 1997-98 season, a year before Regina Miller took over as head coach. It happened twice during the Lady Rebels 4-23 mark that year, the final time coming in a 75-49 loss at Utah on Jan. 24, 1998. Breaking The Streak The Lady Rebels achieved both their first conference win on the road this year in their 67-62 win at Colorado State (1/18), and their first win in Fort Collins in six years. Tournament Play played in its fourth-straight tournament championship game this season on Dec. 18, against Texas A&M in the Scarlet title game of the Duel In The Desert, where the Lady Rebels fell 73-48. The Lady Rebels have three second place finishes (Contra Costa Times Classic, DePaul Invitational), and one championship (Lady Rebel Shootout) in their four title games.
