Enroll in 4-H Today! Many of you have already enrolled in 4-H for the 2017-2018 4-H year. If you have not, please go to ia.4honline.com and log in with your 4-H family e-mail and password. It is okay to select the I forgot my password option if you do not remember your password. There are many great help sheets at: www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4honline-information-families-and-leaders for you to use when re-enrolling. Our goal is to have all re-enrolling members enrolled by November 1. To encourage re-enrollment this year, we have a fun incentive! All Clover Kids enrolled (re-enrollment or new members) by November 1 will be entered into a drawing for $50 in AtlanticCash. All 4-H members enrolled (re-enrollment or new members) by November 1, will be entered into a drawing for a wifi capable tablet. We will also be rewarding the Clover Kids Club and 4-H Club that gets the highest percentage of members re-enrolled by November 1 st with their choice of a pizza or ice cream party served by Extension staff! All enrollments received online or on paper forms by 4:30 PM on Wednesday November 1 will qualify for both of these incentives, so get re-enrolled today! We also encourage you to invite your friends and family to join the 4-H fun! 4-Her s are our best advertisers. If you are having fun, spread the word! Project Selection Enrollment is in full swing and to begin your new 4-H year, start looking at the many project areas that 4-H has to offer. You may choose one or more projects from 30 different areas. There is a 4-H project for everyone! Think about: An interest you d like to explore, a hobby you d like to learn more about, a topic of interest shared by you and your family or something that is fun for you! Remember to select projects that you can get help from your parents/guardian, grandparents, friends or other 4-H members. Work with your parents/guardian and leader to select your 4-H projects. Let s say you want to learn how to take a photograph, feed a pet, build a doghouse, or plant a garden. When you learn those skills, you also learn life skills such as how to make decisions, how to get organized, how to keep records and how to work with others. All these skills can help you as you go through school and beyond. For many 4-H ers, an interest they have in certain 4-H project areas will lead to future careers. Not sure where to start? Visit www.extension.iastate.edu/4h and click on the 4-H projects tab to explore the many different project areas in 4-H. County Fair Premiums 4-H Clubs & FFA Chapters should have received a check to be distributed to the club members in mid- September for County Fair Premiums. County Fair premium is money that is distributed to 4-H and FFA members from the Cass County Fairboard for participation at the County Fair. Premium dollars are different than the livestock sale payment. 4-H and FFA members who exhibited any animal project and/or static exhibits will receive premium dollars for their work they did on the project. Premium amounts are determined by the ribbon placing you received in each of the different shows and events. If you have any questions about how premiums are calculated, please contact the Extension Office. WANT TO KNOW MORE? FIND US AT: EXTENSION.IASTATE.EDU/CASS/4H

Opportunities for Senior Level 4-Her s YAC Youth Representatives Needed Are you a senior level 4-Her that likes to see change and improve the organization you are involved in? Do you enjoy developing and sharing your leadership skills and experiences? Youth Action Committee is just what you need to be involved in! Youth Action Committee (commonly known as YAC) is the program development committee that works on programming and policies related to our county 4-H program. Even more familiar, they plan the volleyball tournament, Mardi Gras and County Convention. We are looking for Senior Level 4-H members to serve a one year term on YAC. If you have any questions about YAC, what it takes to be a YAC member and are interested in serving on YAC, contact the Extension Office! Don t pass up this great opportunity to serve on this important 4-H Committee! SOFA Planning Committee 2017 marked the 23rd anniversary of SOFA. In 2018 we will continue our third decade of guiding youth toward agricultural careers and helping them find their voice to advocate for agriculture. Would you like to be a part of the Speak Out For Agriculture (SOFA) planning committee? We are seeking interested high school students to help plan the trip and contact donors. This is an excellent opportunity to build your leadership and communication skills. Applications are due October 4 to the Extension office. Applications are available on the Cass County Extension website or at the Extension office. 2017-2018 Youth Council Looking for a fun way to get involved, meet other 4-H members from around the county and develop leadership skills? Youth Council is just what you are looking for! Youth Council is an important part of our 4-H program in Cass County that 4-H members in grades 10-12 can get involved in. Youth Council helps plan and conduct events for 4-H members on a county-wide basis, give feedback on the direction of the 4-H program in Cass County, and have fun while developing leadership skills and learning from one another. Sound like fun? Applications are available at the Extension Office or online at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/cass/. Please return the application to the Extension Office by October 4. Thank-A-Thon Cass County is hosting a 4-H Thank-a-Thon this year sponsored by the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The Thank-a-thon will be on Sunday, October 1 to kick off National 4-H Week. We are asking senior age (9-12th grade) 4-H members to come and share their communication skills while giving back to the Southwest Iowa 4-H community. The Iowa 4-H Foundation will provide a list of Southwest Iowa donors and 4-H members will call to thank them for their support and ask them about their favorite 4-H experience. Our 4-H members will have a chance to share how 4-H has helped them grow. We will not be asking for any monetary donations. This is an opportunity to have 4-H members personally thank donors, network with other 4-H ers and build their communication skill set! The event will be at the Cass County Extension office right after Fall Fest, from 6:00-8:00 PM. Pizza will be provided. We will do get-acquainted activities and help 4-H members develop a short personal story to share how 4- H has helped them, a favorite 4-H experience, etc. 4-Hers will share these stories in addition to the phone script provided by the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Please RSVP to the office if you can attend so we order enough pizza! 4-H PLEDGE I PLEDGE MY HEAD TO CLEARER THINKING, MY HEART TO GREATER LOYALTY, MY HANDS TO LARGER SERVICE, AND MY HEALTH TO BETTER LIVING, FOR MY CLUB, MY COMMUNITY, MY COUNTRY, AND MY WORLD.

National 4-H Week October 1-7 Celebrate National 4-H Week with other 4-Hers around the nation from October 1-7. This is a great time to invite friends and classmates to join in the fun of 4-H. What is your club doing to promote 4-H and let everyone know you are involved in an organization with over 6 million other youth? Community service projects, recognition activities, or even simply wearing your 4-H shirt are great ways to show your 4-H pride during National 4-H Week! Invite others to join 4-H and learn what the fun is all about! 4-H Fall Fest October 1 @ 4-6 PM Join us on the Cass County Fairgrounds for the 4-H Fall Fest on October 1 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Kick off National 4-H Week by participating in games & activities, get excited for the Ag Obstacle Course and celebrate 4-H at the 4-H Fall Fest. A potluck dinner will start at 4:30 PM. Bring a side dish or dessert to share and enjoy the main dish provided by the Cass County Fairboard and Atlantic Hy-Vee. All 4-H families, volunteers, and prospective 4-Hers are invited to attend this fun event! Bring a Friend! County Convention November 12 @ 2 PM County Convention is a great time to celebrate the previous year s accomplishments, recognize award winners and close out the year with an enjoyable time with your club and other 4-H members in the county. At this year s County Convention in November, recognition will be given to project award winners and leaders. The new Youth Council will be installed and special club awards will be presented. Winners from our enrollment incentive will also be announced! This is an event you won t want to miss! Mark your calendars for November 12 at 2 PM to celebrate with other 4-Hers in the county at the 2017 County Convention! County Convention Slideshow Do you have some great photos from the past 4-H year that you want to see on the County Convention Slideshow? If you have group photos of some of the 4-H events from the past year, please share them for the County Convention Slideshow! Email photos to Shelby at shelbyrw@iastate.edu to show the awesome things you did in 4-H this past year! Plan to attend County Convention on November 12 at 2 PM to see your photos on the slideshow! Record Book Judging Night October 16 & 18 @ 5:30 PM Mark your calendars on October 16 & 18 at 5:30 PM for Record Book Judging Night. The Youth Action Committee asks all clubs to have at least two adult representatives help judge the senior record books for project awards. If you cannot be there at 5:30 PM, that is OK! Please come when you can to help judge the senior record books. Plan to be at the Cass County Community Center on October 16 & 18 to evaluate the outstanding work our Senior 4-Hers have done during the 2016-2017 4-H year!

CyDay Friday October 27 Join the Cass County Extension Staff for the annual 2017 CyDay Friday Open House October 27 from 11-1 PM. Enjoy lunch, check out Extension resources, get your photo taken with Cy at the Cyclone photo booth and register for door prizes. Mark your calendars for the CyDay Friday Open House on October 27! Club Officer Training Club Officer Training is scheduled for October 19 and October 30 at 6:30 PM at the Community Center in Atlantic. This will be a great opportunity for all club officers and leaders in Cass County to gather, share ideas, develop leadership skills and learn about being an officer. This year we will focus on duties as a club officer and skills to effectively run a meeting. If you are a club leader or officer, plan to attend one of the training dates for important resources and to learn from other officers in the county. Please RSVP to the Extension Office by 4:30 PM on October 16 to attend either Officer Training date! New Member Night All new or second year 4-H members are invited to attend the New Members Night on November 14 at 6:30 PM. Bring your parents and learn about the opportunities in 4-H, possible project ideas, the why and how of record keeping, meet new friends, and much more! A separate learning session will be held for parents, so make sure they stay for the evening. Please contact the Extension Office if you plan to attend this fun, informative event! New Volunteer Training Are you a new club volunteer? All new volunteers are required to attend New Volunteer Training within the first year. This year we are hosting a New Volunteer Training session here at the Cass County Community Center, on November 29 from 6-9 PM. If you cannot attend on this date, please contact our office ASAP and we will help you find another location to attend this year. Be on the look out for more information in the upcoming weeks. Out of Office As many of you know, I am getting married and I will be out of the office September 27 through October 3. If you have any questions regarding the Cass County 4-H program please contact the extension office at 712-243-1132 or email Kate Olson at keolson@iastate.edu. If you would like to RSVP for an event during this time frame please also either call the office or email Kate. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!
