Durham Region Cycling Coalition DRCC Promoting Safe Cycling Throughout Durham Region

Who Are We? Founded in 2015, as a voice for the Region s 5 largest cycling clubs (1,500 + active members) Oshawa Cycling Club Durham Mountain Bike Association Durham Cycling Club Clarington Cycling Club Uxbridge Cycling Club Endorsed by the Region s 5 bike shops Impala, Northern, Bicycle Plus, Cycle Life, Bay Cycle We supports all levels & types of cyclists Including the thousands of local non-club cyclists

Our Goals Achieve a network of safe cycling routes throughout Durham Region; Work with all levels of government to promote cycling: as an active means of transportation (schools, colleges, local bus and GO Train); as a tourist venue for cyclists from outside the Region; for the health benefits; as environmentally friendly zero pollution; as family recreation; for economic advantages: savings to health care system $millions per annum; less wear and tear on infrastructure; revenue growth for local businesses from sales and tourism

Specific to Pickering Lack of safe bike routes to schools and GO station; Lack of designated bicycle lanes; Lack of paved shoulders; Many safe (light traffic) cycling routes are gravel roads or have deteriorated asphalt; Few safe routes to adjoining municipalities; No Active Transportation Advisory committee; Durham/Toronto/York Area transportation study 2009 - no provision for active transportation.

Pickering Transportation Master Plan Last version of the Pickering TMP was 1996 Considerations when updating the PTMP: Establish an Active Transportation Committee made up of local residents to provide input; Develop a cycling specific plan (Pickering Bikeways & Trails Study). Ajax, Oshawa and Whitby have them. DRCC is willing to provide support; Consider the guidelines included with the Ministry of Transportation s Bikeways Design Manual and the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 18; Bike lanes; Paved shoulders; Recessed catch basins; Signage.

Pickering Transportation Master Plan Consider safe commuter routes to key areas (GO Transit, malls, schools etc); Improve and maintain road surfaces on key cycling routes; Pave gravel roads on key cycling routes (currently limited access to the north); Ensure the Seaton development includes safe cycling infrastructure; Connect to adjacent municipal, provincial (Waterfront Trail/Green Belt Route) and national (Trans Canada Trail)bike routes.

Strava Heat Map North Pickering Void

Suggested Priority Work Provide bike lanes or multi use paths to connect residential areas to GO Transit; Modify sidewalk of Waterfront Trail along Bayly St to a multiuse path; Connect Water Front Trail to Green Belt Route by: Paving Church St from Taunton to Conc. 5 2.1 km; Resurfacing Greenwood Rd from Conc. 5 to Conc. 6 2.1 km; (Padock Rd!!!!) Paving Sideline 12 from Conc. 7 to Regional Rd. 5 (connection to Claremount) 8.7 km; Paving Sideline 12 from Regional Rd. 5 to Uxbridge Pickering Town Line (Green Belt Route) 5.7 km. Resurface Conc. 7, Westney Rd. to Salem Rd 1.6 km (connects to Columbus Rd a major E-W route through Durham) Repave Whitevale Rd. from Altona Rd. to Brock Rd. and Conc. 5 from Church St. to Greenwood Rd. 1.1 km This is a relatively quiet E-W bike route; Add sharrows/share the Road signs on two lane roads without shoulders that are significant bike routes.

We are all in this together An updated Active Transportation Master Plan is key; The health, safety and enjoyment of all citizens is a shared responsibility; Seaton development an opportunity; Airport lands can be worked around; We do understand it can NOT all be done tomorrow but certain bike/pedestrian safety enhancements can be tasked earlier; Thank you for allowing DRCC to speak to you; Do you have any questions?
