ADJUDICATOR PROFILES 3 JAZZ AND HIP HOP ADJUDICATOR VIRGINIA FERRIS Virginia Ferris is a successful versatile artistic director, choreographer, event manager, specialised tutor and adjudicator and has created hundreds of events and shows in Australia and internationally. After studying as a classical dancer she went on to perform with the Tasmanian Ballet and Company in Flight Dance Company (San Francisco, USA). She performed in The Peter Allen Australian National Show, David Atkins Dancin' Man, USA productions of Hello Dolly. She has choreographed and performed with Frank Sinatra, Marcia Hines, Kylie Minogue, Jimmy Somerville, Marilyn Jones, and Kath and Kim to name a few. In 2015 she was the Performance Director for Sydney Chinese New Year Lunar Festival (City of Sydney Council) and Artistic Director of the Dance Fusion Project (Red Earth Arts Festival in Karratha, WA). Virginia has been the Artistic Director for The Australian Dance Awards, Streets of Dance Company, Director of Choreography for Sydney 2002 Gay Games Opening and Closing Ceremony, Choreographer for Sydney Olympic Games Live Sites, and worked as Choreographer's Assistant for David Atkins Enterprises for many years. She has an extensive list of teaching credits, currently teaching at Australian College of Physical Education, Australian Institute of Music, and the Academy of Film, Theatre and Television in Sydney Australia. She is returning Adjudicator for Jazz, Ballet and Contemporary sections for both Sydney Eisteddfod June/July 2016, Gold Coast Eisteddfod August 2016. TAP ADJUDICATOR -- FIONA SCOTT Fiona has danced for over 35 years and has run her dance studio for 24 years. She has her Full Teaching Diplomas in CSTD Tap & Theatrical. She trained in Classical Ballet (CSTD, RAD, BBO) Tap & Modern Jazz. She specializes in Tap dance having trained with the likes of Tarik Winston, Chris Horsey, Christine Denny, Sean Robinson to name a few. Fiona worked at the Civic Theatre Restaurant in Perth for 4 years and was a backup dancer for International Elvis Impersonator Max Pelicano. Fiona has also choreographed and performed in many Perth Productions such as 42 nd St, Chicago, Cabaret, Cats & Annie. She also performed onstage in 2012 with Chris Horsey for the International Tap Festival in Melbourne, in a piece called The Orchestra and in a Perth produced tap show called Sole Mates in 2015 at the Perth Fringe Festival. Fiona has also performed in LA. Fiona won the 2012 Perth State Championship Choreography award for her tap routine Sevenation Army. Fiona teaches all forms of dance as well as still travelling interstate and overseas to take workshops. She has just returned from LA & New York where she trained at Broadway Dance Centre and The Edge Performing Arts Centre. She would like to wish all the performers a fabulous time at the competitions and is looking forward to her first trip to New Zealand. BALLET ADJUDICATOR JAYNE SMEULDERS Born in Dampier, Western Australia, Jayne began her ballet training at Jody Marshall Dance Company and continued on to study at the Graduate College of Dance. Jayne trained in the RAD, CSTD and Vaganova methods competing in many competitions with outstanding results. She was winner of the overall Dancer of the Festival for 10 consecutive years in the CSTD State Festival. In 1993 Jayne received a scholarship to finish her studies in Germany at Hamburg Staatsope GmbG Ballettschule. Before joining West Australian Ballet in 1999, Jayne performed for four years with Nederlands Dans Theater II. She accompanied NDT on tours to most major theatres all over the world. During the past 16 years with West Australian Ballet Jayne has danced many lead roles and worked with choreographers such as Ted Bransen, Natalie Weir, Adrian Burnett, Chrissie Parrott, Simon Dow, Matjash Mrozewski, Askhat Galiamov, PetrZuska, Kim McCarthy, Ashley

Page, Stephen Page, Gary Stewart and Ivan Cavallari. Jayne was nominated for a Helpmann Award in 2003, awarded a WA Dance Award for most outstanding female dancer in 2008, and promoted to Leading Artist in February 2008. Jayne has danced the roles of Kate in John Cranko s The Taming of the Shrew with Stuttgart Ballet s principal artist Filip Barankiewicz, Clara in Ivan Cavallari s The Nutcracker and the title role in Giselle with guest Principal Artist Ivan Gil-Ortega. Also in 2009, she was awarded the West Australian Citizen of the Year for her services to arts, culture and entertainment. In 2010 Jayne took a short break for the birth of her youngest child Cooper and returned for the company s May season to dance the role of Kitri in Lucette Aldous Don Quixote and the Lilac Fairy in Marcia Haydées The Sleeping Beauty. Since returning to Perth, Jayne has choreographed a number of ballets to much acclaim including Sway for Ballet Under the Stars 2001 and multiple pieces for Ballet at the Quarry including When Strangers Meet (2004), Black Attitude (2006) and Tango Etudes (2008). In 2011, Jayne choreographed her first full-length show for West Australian Ballet Cinderella. Inspired by Balanchine, Jayne created a Grande Tarantella that premiered in West Australian Ballet s Embraceable You season 2015. Jayne has also created many pieces for the company to perform at Balls and corporate events. Her latest project is a full length Nutcracker for West Australian Ballet in December this year. Jayne also spends many hours a week working with students, choreographing and coaching, sharing her love of music and dance at the dance school she grew up at, Jody Marshall Dance Company. 4 COMPETITION RULES 1. STATUS This competition is for amateurs only and is not open to professionals. 2. COMPETITORS Competitors who have been taught or coached by the adjudicator during the past two years are not eligible to compete. 3. The Adjudicator s decision is final. Communication with the Adjudicator by competitors or teachers during or prior to the competition is strictly prohibited. This does not apply to officers of the Society going about their normal duties. 4. Competitors dance at their own risk. ACDS will not be liable for any accident or injury of any description. 5. Competitors may compete once only in each class, unless otherwise specified. 6. AGE LIMIT Competitor s age is taken as at 1 September 2016. Evidence of date of birth must be produced on request. Entrants must be of the age stated in the class. For Duos and Trios only, a member may be of a younger age, provided that the eldest is of the stated age. For Group classes, all competitors in the group must be within the stated age. 7. ENTRIES The Committee may combine or divide classes if entries so warrant. 8. CDs The music for each dance must be on a separate CD. 9. TROPHIES Please make sure that these are engraved, cleaned and returned by 1 August 2016. Anyone with trophies not returned by the close of entries will forfeit their right to dance, with no refund of entry fees. Trophies must be returned to the relevant trophy stewards.

ORDER OF PERFORMANCE All competitors must dance in the order set out in the programme. Those not present when called, shall, at the discretion of the Committee, forfeit their right to compete. 11. BACK STAGE No one other than officials or competitors will be allowed back stage unless premission is granted by the Stage Manager. 12. VIDEOING Videoing and taking photographs of competitors on stage may only take place with prior consent from the Secretary. You may only film your child and both the teacher and the competitor must have no objection to their item being filmed. 13. DISTURBANCES The Society reserves the right to remove any person/s from the premises for any inappropriate behaviour. 14. TAP SHOES No tap shoes may be worn in the theatre or corridors. Spraying of shoes or props is not permitted in the theatre or grounds. 15. SMOKING Smoking is not permitted on the premises or in the grounds of the theatre or school. 16. PASSES Passes are for the use of the purchaser only and will be confiscated should anyone else use them. 17. PROTESTS Persons wishing to enter a protest must lodge this in writing, citing the grounds on which it is based and a lodgement fee of $100 within 12 hours of the Adjudicator s award. Upon investigation, if the protest is considered frivolous or unfounded, the deposit will be forfeited. 18. UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN Children must not be left at the Theatre unsupervised. 19. ACDS CODE OF CONDUCT The Society encourages fair play to all. Please adhere to our Code of Conduct at all times. No moving around the theatre while someone is dancing Refrain from applause or vocal support until the end of each item Please remember that everyone working at the competition is a volunteer and doing their best in all circumstances. 5

SCHOLARSHIPS This is an optional entry at a cost of $10 per section and must be indicated on entry form at time of entry. Points awarded as follows 5 (1 st ), 3 (2 nd ), 1 (3 rd ). In the event of a tie, actual marks will be counted for each relevant dance. Competitors must dance in all classes specified to qualify. The winner of this Award will not be eligible to compete in future Ora Burnett Jazz Awards. A minimum of 10 entries is required to hold the Award. ENTRY FEE $50 DATE Sunday evening, 25 September 2016 DANCES Competitors must dance in their age group Modern Jazz class to be eligible for the Ora Burnett Jazz Award. Competitors will be required to perform three dances as follows; Modern Jazz (dance not to be repeated in age group Modern Jazz) max 4 mins Contemporary max 4 minutes Impromptu (no set costume requirement) Music set by adjudicator. The winner is required to dance in the ACDS Final Concert on Sunday 2 October where their prize money will be presented and a photo taken for ACDS social media. 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd placegetters are required to submit a letter of ackowledgement to the Burnett Trust regarding their future plans. 1 st $5,000, 2 nd $1,500, 3 rd $1,000 NOEL BURNETT TAP AWARD AGE Open to competitors 15 & under 21 years as at 1 September 2016. The winner of this Award will not be eligible to compete in future Noel Burnett Tap Awards. A minimum of 10 entries is required to hold the Award. ENTRY FEE $50 DATE Wednesday 28 September 2016 DANCES Competitors must dance in at least one open class in the Tap section to be eligible for the Noel Burnett Tap Award. Competitors will be required to perform three dances as follows; 3 Speed Championship Tap (one chorus slow, one chorus medium and one chorus fast in any sequence.
