Introduction: It is planned to meet at Calshot on Friday evening 13 th April 2018. We want to share our enthusiasm with you in sailing Wayfarers on the sea. We are keen to exchange ideas and experiences. There will be some very experienced Wayfarer sailors and Senior Instructors on hand to deliver training and share some TOP tips with you. The training will be divided between 'on the water' and some classroom sessions ashore. We plan to run a rally on the Sunday to put into practice all that we have learned. The event is open to beginners, families and the more experienced sailors who can share their skills with the group. We will also be celebrating the 60th birthday of the UKWA. Programme: Friday: On arrival, please prepare boats and leave near slipway. 2100 Meet in Calshot Bar Social drinks. Saturday: 0900 Welcome brief in Keymar House - meet 'the team'. 0920-1030 GPS/good radio practices and procedures/small boat navigation. 1030-1045 Electronics (Navionics for small boats). 1045-1100 Tea and biscuits. 1100-1130 Essential kit for day sailing/reefing afloat drills (outside Keymar). 1130-1230 * Capsize recovery demo (in the Creek). 1230-1330 Lunch (bring packed lunch, or book meal with Calshot). 1330-1400 The use of conventional and asymmetric spinnakers demo. 1400-1430 Launch boats on slipway. Radio checks when launched. 1430-1700 Tacking and gybing, hove-to, boat control. Reefing afloat drills. Pick up a mooring. 1700 Recover all boats and equipment. 1900 Dinner in Calshot Spinnakers bar. 2000 Informal presentation in Keymar House. 'Wayfarers to Ostend' and 'Dover to Calais' (beer and nibbles available). * Participants will not be asked to capsize or take part in any capsize demo or enter the sea. Sunday: Rally to Hill Head S.C. 0900 Safety brief in Keymar house. 0930 Launch on slipway. Radio checks when clear of slipway. 1000 1030 Sailing up and down Southampton Water. Lead boat, Now or Never 1130 ETA Hill Head Sailing Club. (bring a packed lunch). 1300 Depart Hill Head Sailing Club. 1500 ETA Calshot Recover all boats. - 2 -
SUNDAY RALLY: We hope that all participants will join the rally. There will be a safety brief in Keymar house at 0900, we hope to launch soon after. VHF communications on Ch08 will be tested with the lead boat. We will sail in Southampton water before making our way to Hill Head S.C. This is a short distance from Calshot. All boats will be berthed in the small harbour at Hill Head S.C. Bring your own packed lunch. Hot and cold drinks will be available from the sailing club. Toilet facilities are also available. After a stay of approximately 1.5 hours, we will return to Calshot, ETA 1500. If you are attending without a boat, we hope to slot you into other participants boats. We are confident that all who attend will get a sail. Kit Required for the Rally: Personal buoyancy Anchor and rope in a bucket Bucket doubles as a bailer Paddles/oars Spare shackles and rope. Whistle for attracting attention Chart don t buy one, we will have route hand-outs. Compass, hand-bearing or fixed VHF radio and/or flares There are other items you might wish to bring - masthead flotation, outboard motor, VHF radio, flares, first aid kit, etc but not essential for this trip. Communications: The Lead Boat, 'Now or Never' will control communications on CH08. Berthing instructions will be given on approach to Hill Head Sailing Club. PARKING AT CALSHOT: Calshot have now installed an Automatic Number Plate Recognition system (ANPR). When making your accommodation booking, please give Calshot reception your vehicle details, registration etc. Failure to do so will prevent you leaving the site. Day visitors must pay at machines provided. If you are a resident (ie, staying at Calshot), your B+B price automatically includes parking. If you are a day visitor, parking is charged at 4 per day.
