Contact Us Committee @southside.com.au Secretary Wayne Egan Even though I am a bit biased I think it s a pretty strong crew you have this year but it still needs you guys and gals to help make it work A couple of changes that you should make note of firstly the 2018 Committee will be meeting on the first Thursday at 7.30 Pm at Sharkies after the Monthly comp and everyone is welcome, a quick meeting is a good meeting and the agenda is programmed for approximately one hour. Should the weather or lack of surf prevent a scheduled Comp we will still have the scheduled Committee meeting as per the Southside Malibu Comp Event Calendar which is on the website and at the end of the newsletter. These meetings will ensure we keep the Club on track to deliver for our members. Secondly the 2018 Committee changed the Comp timetable for late autumn /winter months to 7.00am (April to August) so that we are not wandering around in the dark. Please be on time for all comps as it still takes a bit of organising for the Contest Director to get organised for the day and meanwhile we can all help set up the tents and equipment. The 2018 Committee welcomes your photos and any stories that you may wish to submit especially on any surf trips past present or planning for not meeting before sunrise. Each month post the Comp we will be publishing a newsletter to keep you update to date with what is happening. We look forward to our past members and new members joining us for the February Comp we are planning a big year for everyone to be a part of in 2018. See you on the Beach Wayne Egan Secretary
Presidents address 2018 Well here we go again, welcome to 2018 I d like to start by introducing myself, and giving a brief history. I joined the club in Oct 1984.Dave Ryan had started it about 5 months. Prior, as longboard riding was just at the cusp of a new resurgence, we had about 20 members in the club at the time, not a lot, but all very keen and competitive, every one surfed. At the start of 86, Dave decided to move to McMasters beach, and to leave the club. Luke Streater, Paul Van Dam, Paul Lawson, Jim Sourry, Tim Vanderlaan and I convened a hasty meeting at the old Caringbah hotel to decide what to do. We decided to keep it going, with Luke as President, and myself as Vice president, with the other guys as committee men, and away we went. And, as they say in the classics, the rest is history. That year we had the first Spring Classic which in those days was over 2 days. I served for a further 2 years as Vice President, then for 2yrs As President, followed by a further 3years as a committee man. We are now into our 34 th year. We are a strong club, and at times have been the largest surfboard riding club in the whole of Australia. We are down a little on membership at the moment, but plans are afoot to build the club through the year to its past glory. Thanks go to Rebecca Neil and her committee from last year. Rebecca has been our first female President, and did a great job under trying conditions. Surf wise last year was probably the worst year that I can remember. Hopefully Huey will be kinder to us this year. We intend to hold a meeting on the first Thursday following the monthly comp.at Sharkies at 7.30pm.All are welcome if you wish, remember it s your club, so don t be afraid to speak up, we need your input. We also intend to email a newsletter every month, so will be looking for input. Any contributions i.e. stories, photos experiences etc. will be welcome.
Well for now that s about it. Remember we are all surfing kin, brought together with the common love of surfboard riding, and the culture that goes with it. So be good to each other and above all have fun. See you all at 6am. Bright and early on Sunday 4 th February. Cheers Rod Menzies (El Presidente) 2017 Club Championship There were four Club members last year who you could always count on them being there; In fact they were at every event: Paul and Jackson Detmold, Rod Harty and Lindsay Sharp. Special mention also to Roy Streeter, Rod Dale and Peter Toby who helped out with the tallying of results. Most improved Competitors 1. Rod Menzies 2. Lindsay Sharp 3. Rod Dale 4. Jackson Detmould 5. Cheers Ross Newling Head Contest Director Twenty years ago.. 1997 was a big year for Southside. A quick look back through the records showed that the club had 84 competitors throughout the year. In those days we had a Scratch competition combined with a Handicap competition. The Scratch competition determined the Club Champion. The Handicap competition was based on improvement & consistency. It was pretty hard to do well in both comps. The Club Champion for 1997 was Brad Whittaker with Tim Vanderlaan second whilst the Handicap was taken out by the very consistent Luke Streater with the ever-improving Junior of the day Ryan Barclay second. Interestingly third place was Jason Blanch. Jason has recently re-joined the club after a lengthy lay-off.
Tim doing what he does best. In September of 1997, as usual Southside held the annual Spring Classic which ran in conjunction with The Cronulla Surfer s Reunion, celebrating thirty years since the end of the original longboard era. The reunion brought Cronulla surfers as far away as Western Australia, North Queensland and New Zealand back for the weekend. The Reunion started with a golf day on the Friday and ended up with a Barbie at North Cronulla surf Club pool after the completion of the Classic on Sunday afternoon. Many of the guys back for the reunion also competed in the Classic. Saturday night was a traditional STOMP AT North Cronulla Surf Club where many surf stories were told, and old friendships rekindled. The night finished in the wee hours, many thanks should go to Ray Wilkinson for organising the whole event. Meanwhile the Classic which had always been an 84 man 8 & over Open one-day event changed format for the first time to a multi-division two-day event with about 130 competitors. Everything ran smoothly for both the Classic & the reunion much to the relief of the organisers. I was President of the Club that year with Rod Menzies Vice President and I was also the Contest Director, so I was happy when the weekend was over. This year I have agreed to fill the role of Club Historian and will rely heavily on assistance from a couple of the long-term members. Our aim will be to supply historical information about the club, its members and of course surfing in general. Looking forward to 2018 Larry Beaver Club Historian
