Wahroonga FC Tiger Rag May 2009 Wahroonga Players selected for the Football NSW Scholarship Program Congratulations to these players from the Wahroonga U8 Red team - Connor Slater, Ethan Flint, Joel van Herten participated in the Football NSW Sydney North Grassroots Development squad over the Summer, and have just been selected in a FNSW Scholarship Program. This program is a new initiative of the FNSW High Performance unit aimed at developing the next generation of elite representative boys and girls. A group of approximately 18 boys & girls will participate in special training for 2 nights a week, from April to October. Their progress will be filmed and documented in order to facilitate the development of future coaching programs. Good Luck boys! Sshh Day 16th & 17th May Sshh Day will be held this weekend for U6, U7 & U8 teams on Saturday and GU8, GU9 & GU10 teams on Sunday. The aim of the day is to raise money for the Shepherd Centre and to try a keep spectators and parents quiet on the sidelines. Coaches are encouaged to keep instructions to a minimum and spectators are asked not to speak or yell out during the game. A gold coin fine is donated each time a spectator speaks to player or official. Participation is voluntary but strongly encouraged. We raised lots of money last year for the Shepherd Centre and it is great to watch the teams play their own games without interference. U6, U7 & U8 teams will be given Sshh Day packs at their SSG centres on Saturday. Girls SSG teams need to collect their packs from Karuah on Saturday for their Sunday Games. Enjoy the day and try to keep quiet!! 1
President s Report Tony Batten Hi everyone and welcome to the 2009 season if you re a new player, thank you for joining us at Wahroonga, and if you re returning it s great to have you back again this season. After a stop-start beginning in April everything is well underway now in season 2009, and we hope that things are going well for your team. Wahroonga FC is back big and strong again this year, with 870+ players across 75 teams in all age groups from Under 6 to Over 45. We ve continued our strong growth in girls and womens football, and we now have more girls playing Junior & Youth football (U10- U18) than we do boys! We re very pleased to see such strong interest continuing in this area well done girls. We re very hopeful that our All-Age squad will do well this year following their promotion to Division 2. For many years, Wahroonga has been relatively uncompetitive in the higher divisions of All-Age, but new coach Warwick Kirby has invested a lot of time and energy readying the guys for a big challenge, and we are all behind the squad as they attempt to consolidate in the higher division. Please give them your support, and get along to a game if you possible can I m sure the boys will appreciate it. Small-sided games continues its expansion, with teams up to U11 now playing this format of the game. SSG is on display each week at Karuah Park, and I encourage all players and families to make the most of this new format. It s all about making sure that every player gets plenty of touches of the ball and develops their skills, so make the most of it everyone. Last year we launched the very successful SSHH Day at Karuah, assisting the Shepherd Foundation by ensuring that EVERYBODY on the sidelines had nothing but constructive, supportive comments to make during games. This coming weekend SSHH Day returns, so please do your bit to support the players by being supportive or keeping quiet. You ll be asked to pay a fine if you don t! The effort involved in getting a club of this size organised and prepared for a season is huge, and I d like to thank all of those Mums & Dads who ve helped us at Registration, at Grading days, or who have put their hands up to be a Coach, Manager or Referee. We can t get the job done without your assistance folks, so thanks very much for your time and energy. A very special thanks to our Wahroonga FC Management Committee members, who have worked tirelessly for the past few months to get the show on the road. These folks are all volunteers, and the work they put in on our behalf is amazing given that there are relatively few members. Well done Committee you are terrific! Wonderful as our Committee are folks, the job of running Wahroonga FC is complex and diverse, and we need more active participants on the Committee to help us keep things running smoothly. I ve listed some of the key areas where we need help elsewhere in this newsletter, and I d really like to talk to you if you can help us in any of these areas. That s all for this time. Enjoy this edition of the Tiger Rag, and I look forward to seeing you at a football field soon! Cheers Tony Batten 2
Can You Help Us? As I mentioned earlier, Wahroonga FC is a large club run by volunteers through it Management Committee. These good folks are responsible for every aspect of forming & supporting teams throughout the year, and they do a fantastic job. However, as the club grows, we need more participants on our Committee to ensure that things keep going smoothly if we leave too much to too few, the quality of everyone s football experience suffers. Right now, Wahroonga FC needs some additional help from our members. Some of the key roles we need to fill are: Junior Coordinator this person looks after Ages U10-U14 in the Mixed competitons. Their role is to support the Age Managers in registering & grading teams, placing them in the correct divisions, and resolving any issues which arise during the season. This is a Management Committee position. Kit & Gear Manager this person ensures that we have enough shirts, shorts, socks, footballs, medical kits etc to meet the needs of our 70+ teams each season. They manage our stock of all items, reordering as necessary through our suppliers. This is a Management Committee position. Ground Dressers Wahroonga FC is responsible for dressing 5 main ovals each week dressing nmeans putting up and taking down nets and corner flags. The club is fined by KDSA if we don t do this, and referees can refuse to allow games to proceed if the ground is not adequately dressed. We need some people to dress Turramurra Oval and Ku-Ring-Gai High School each week, and we are happy to pay (moderately) in order to get this done. If you live near these grounds and can spare 45 mins or so each weekend, please help us with this. Tender Management every few years we tender for the replacement of our playing shirts, and we are just about to embark on such an exercise now. If you have expertise in this area we d be very grateful for your help. General there s always a lot to do at a football club, so if the roles above are not you but you d like to help out and become involved, please give me a call and we can discuss how you can make a contribution for your family and everyone else s. If you can help with any of these roles, please contact me on 0410 718 726 or at pres09@wahroongafc.com.au Team and Individual Photos This year our Team and Individual Photos will be taken by Advanced Life Photography. Photos will be scheduled on Saturday 30th May, Sunday 31st May and Saturday June 13th. Photo packs for all teams will be available for collection by Team Managers from Karuah from Saturday May 16th. Please distribute the order envelopes to all team members. Please check the club website www.wahroongafc.com.au for the photo schedule. As the draw is not yet available for SSG U6-U11 teams for these dates, times have not yet been allocated. As soon as the draw is available we will allocate each team a time for their photos. If you have any questions, please contact Nicki at sec09@wahroongafc.com.au 3
