Cupa
We are honored to introduce you to the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup - Buşteni 2010, the finals of the most important and spectacular world competition of this kind. As a result of our successful history as World Cup organizers we have been entrusted with the staging, for the 3 rd time in four years, of the Cup s Finals; and of the first ever European Championship of Ice Climbing, difficulty and speed. Every year we have come up with a novelty. In 2009 a refrigeration unit was been installed allowing the competition to take place on high-qualityice at temperatures of up to +10C. This is a world-first, designed and built in Canada specially for Buşteni. Its uniqueness will boost the international image of the Buşteni events as it represents a new proof of the seriousness and passion with which the organizers, the Romanian Alpine Club and the Municipality of Buşteni are constantly preoccupied with the improving the image of these events.
For 2010, we are preparing a a new climbing facility designed on the concept of an opera stage: nothing is fixed, routes will be changed and redesigned within hours, providing unlimited options. With this new concpt we hope to set a standard and an example. We have also set the goal to cover at least 60% of the climbing routes with ice. Hence, large surfaces of artificially refrigerated climbing features have been incorporated; and a refrigeration container will keep smaller elements, panels and modules below freezing point and ready for installation prior to the competition. We will have a new Tag Heuer timing system with large panels and real-time scoring of both the on-going event and of the overall World Cup.
Ice climbing has been a necessity for those who wanted to climb in winter mountaineering routes with extreme technical difficulties. It later developed into an independent sport, thus implying the need for it to take place on artificial structures that increase the difficulty and allow spectators to enjoy spectacular performances in competition conditions.
In 2010 the stages of the Ice Climbing World Cup will be: Jan January, 7-9, 2010 January, 16 18, 2010 January, 22-23, 2010 Kirov, Russia The 1st Stage, Difficulty and Speed Val Daone, Italy The 2nd Stage, Difficulty and Speed Saas Fee, Switzerland The 3rd Stage, Difficulty and Speed February, 4-7, 2010 Buşteni, Romania The World Cup Finals The European Open Championship (in both Difficulty and Speed)
There will be athletes from France, Italy, the USA, Austria, Spain, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Norway, Romania,. just as last year and more. The number of competitors is estimated at about 80. Statements in the previous competitions: Buşteni, top of the World would you have ever thought that the best World Cup is a Romanian one? Buşteni...organizes the best stage of the World Cup on a structure that eclipses the famous one in Val Daone, Italy... Pareti Climbing Magazine I am happy that in the final I climbed the route and that I won. Those who designed the climbing structure really did an extraordinary job. The spectators were great. I appreciated the organisers constant care during the whole competition. Ines PAPERT, World Cup Winner (Germany) It is the best competition. It was marvellous. The climbing structure is the most difficult in the world. The audience encouraged us. It was a real contest, but we cannot say that there is only a winner. We are all winners. Evgeny KRYVOSHEYTSEV, Busteni Stage Winner (Ukraine) I was very happy that I managed to get to the end of the route. I am extremely happy because I am leading the World Championship. The structure and the routes in Buşteni are very good. I am glad that you show enthusiasm. I felt that a lot of people endeavoured to bring the top quality to the contest. Organisers : The Romanian Alpine Club - CAR The Romanian Alpine Club was createt up in 1936, at present counting over 600 members and 20 branches throughout the country; it has been the only Romanian organisation member with full rights in the UIAA ever since 1937. Since 1936, CAR has become involved in the vanguard of a number of mountain activities such as: the trail maintenance, the building of the Costila Refuge in 1938, the CAR Mountain Centre in Busteni in 1939, the printing of the Alpine Bulletin and the setting up of the first school of modern technical mountain climbing. Continuing this tradition, the CAR organized the Ice Climbing World Cup in Romania for the first time in February 2006. As a result of the excellent outcome, the UIAA awarded CAR in 2007 the right to hold the World Cup Finals, in 2008 an intermediate stage and for the first time in the world the World Speed Climbing Record competition; in 2009, for the second time the World Cup Finals and the Speed Record competition.
