Next Up: A victory for the Broncos would send them into Sunday s second round at the KFC Yum! Center. THE LATEST Boise State will be making its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and third in four seasons, when it takes on Louisville this Friday at the KFC Yum! Center. Senior forward Shalen Shaw will become the first player in Boise State history to play in three NCAA Tournaments (2015, 2017-18) when the ball is tipped Friday. Boise State won the Mountain West double this season, capturing both the conference s regular season and tournament titles. The Mountain West Tournament crown was the program s third in four seasons, and second in a row. The Broncos are became the first repeat tournament champs since Fresno State won the 2013 and 2014 events. Boise State also became just the seventh No. 1 seed to capture the Mountain West Tournament title since the first event in 2000. Sophomore guard Riley Lupfer was named the Mountain West Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Lupfer averaged 16.7 points and hit 12 3-pointers over the three games, and scored a game-high 19 points in the title-game win over Nevada. Just like last year, Boise State enters the NCAA Tournament on a 10-game winning streak. 2017-18 SCHEDULE 23-9 (14-4 MW) H: 11-5 A: 9-2 N: 3-2 Date Opponent Time/Result 11/10 NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN W, 83-51 at Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic 11/17 vs. San Diego L, 52-72 11/19 vs. Northern Arizona L, 60-62 11/26 CORBAN W, 94-50 11/30 SAINT MARY S L, 72-74 12/3 at Eastern Washington W, 61-57 12/7 WASHINGTON W, 85-62 12/10 at Portland W, 73-47 12/18 WASHINGTON STATE L, 53-61 12/20 CSU BAKERSFIELD L, 59-65 12/21 ST. A Shanti Coleman scored Boise State s final four points of the contest, capped by an offensive rebound and putback that just beat the buzzer to seal the win. Boise State came back from down eight with 8:05 to go, outscoring Nevada 19-9 the rest of the way. Riley Lupfer scored a game-high 19 points, hitting five 3-pointers, while Braydey Hodgins capped an outstanding tournament with 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. WHO S NEXT Boise State will travel to The Bluegrass State to face No. 1 seed Louisville (32-2) Friday at 10 a.m. MT at the KFC Yum! Center. The contest, which is the first meeting between the programs, will be part of the tournament s opening set of games Friday. Louisville finished tied for first in the ACC standings with Notre Dame, and went on to defeat the Irish in the ACC title game. The Cardinals, winners of seven-straight entering Friday s first-round contest, are led by the play of junior guard and ACC Player of the Year Asia Durr (18.8 ppg, 102 3-pointers, 42.3 3-pt FG pct.), along with senior forward Myisha Hines-Allen (13.9 ppg, 9.8 rpg). Louisville reached the Sweet 16 last season, after making a second-round exit from the tournament in 2016. The Cardinals reached the national championship game in 2009 and 2013, falling to Connecticut each time. BOISE STATE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT Friday s contest will mark Boise State s fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos, 0-4 at the event all-time, made previous appearances in 1994, 2007, 2015, and 2017. The Broncos were a 9-seed in 1994, falling 89-61 at Washington in the first round. In 2007, the Broncos got a 12 seed, and were defeated 76-67 by George Washington in Los Angeles. Over the last four years, the Broncos received a 15 seed in 2015 and took Tennessee to the limit before falling 72-61 in Knoxville, and last season, as a 13 seed, Boise State was defeated at UCLA, 83-56. LET S MARK THE 20-YEAR ANNIVERSARY The Broncos unexpectedly received a 16 seed in this year s draw, but something else involving a 16 seed happened somewhat unexpectedly 20 years ago. For the first, and to date, only time in men s or women s NCAA Tournament history, a 16-seed defeated a 1-seed as Harvard upset Stanford 71-67 at Maples Pavilion. Over the past 24 years, since the women s tournament expanded to 64 teams, 16 seeds are 1-95 in first-round games. HEADIN EAST Friday s contest will be only Boise State s fifth trip east of the Mississippi since the 2002-03 season. That year, the Broncos traveled to James Madison, dropping a 73-35decision to the Dukes. The remaining trips east were an 87-48 loss at Syracuse on Dec. 30, 2012, 2015 s NCAA Tournament First Round game at Tennessee, and a 1-1 split in Puerto Rico over Thanksgiving 2015 in which the Broncos lost to Auburn but defeated Stetson. PROGRAM HISTORY FOR SHAW When she steps on the court Friday, and the ball is tipped, Boise State forward Shalen Shaw will become the only player in program history to play in three NCAA Tournaments (2015, 2017-18). Shaw, a freshman on the first Boise Starte Mountain West Women s Basketball www.themw.com

Shaw, who scored 10 points in last Friday s title-game win over Nevada, has been a vital piece of Boise State s success over the past four seasons. She is the only player in Bronco history with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, and 200 assists, and, in the program record books, currently ranks 11th in scoring (1,179 points), 10th in field goals made (468), third in rebounds (883), seventh in blocks (82), and 11th in assists (272). It should be noted that Shaw is not the only Bronco to be part of three NCAA Tournament teams, as redshirt junior center Marijke Vanderschaaf has also been part of the 2015, 2017 and 2018 tournament squads, but was injured in 2015 and 2018. YET ANOTHER HONOR FOR LUPFER Sophomore guard Riley Lupfer was named the Mountain West Tournament Most Outstanding Player last Friday, adding yet another honor to her career year. Lupfer averaged 16.7 points per game and hit 12 3-pointers over Boise State s 3-0 run, capping it with a game-high 19 points and five treys in the title-game win over Nevada. Lupfer, selected to her first All-Mountain West Team this season, has posted a recordbreaking season in 2017-18. The Spokane, Wash., native set both the Boise State and Mountain West single-season records for 3-pointers made, currently at 120. She eclipsed Abby Vaughan s Boise State mark of 81 (set in 2002-03) back on Feb. 3 at UNLV, and passed the old conference mark of 110 set by Utah s Iwalani Rodrigues in 2010-11 in March 6 s quarterfinal matchup against Air Force. Lupfer also set the Mountain West record for 3-pointers made in conference play with 79, far outpacing the old record of 57. This season she was named Mountain West Player of the Week a conference-best three times (Jan. 2, Jan. 15, Feb. 19), and was recognized nationally with inclusion on the NCAA.com Starting Five for the week of Jan. 8-14. Additionally, Lupfer posted eight 20-point games during conference play, and failed to score in double digits just once out of 21 contests (18 regular season, three tournament). Four times she hit seven 3-pointers in a single game. For all games, Lupfer ranks eighth in the country in 3-pointers made with 108, and fifth in 3-point field-goal percentage (45.8). Lupfer leads the Broncos with 16.4 points per game, shooting 47.1 percent from the field and 94.3 from the line. HERMIDA NAMED All-MOUNTAIN WEST Junior guard and Spain international Marta Hermida has enjoyed her finest season in a Boise State uniform in 2017-18, averaging career bests in scoring (10.8 ppg), rebounding (5.5 rpg), and assists (4.78 apg). Over the 18-game conference season, Hermida ranked third in the Mountain West with 4.61 assists per game, and 18th in scoring at 10.6 points per game. Coming off of a summer in which she earned a FIBA U20 Women s European Championship gold medal for Spain, Hermida took on a vital leadership role for the Broncos this season, handling point-guard duties for the first month of the season while Braydey Hodgins recovered from a preseason injury. She continued to play in the point-guard role parttime after Hodgins return, crossing over from her usual role as a second shooting guard, alongside Lupfer. Her versatility was a boon to the Boise State offense, as Hermida scored in double figures nine times in conference play, and dished out at least five assists on seven occasions, highlighted by a a program singlegame record 14 on Jan. 24 at San Jose State. Hermida was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Feb. 12, after she averaged 23.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 57.7 percent over wins against New Mexico (Feb. 7) and Utah State (Feb. 10). Her performance that week set up the wins that opened Boise State s current seven-game winning streak. At the Mountain West Tournament, Hermida averaged 12.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while shooting 43.6 percent from the field. BIG GAME BRAYDEY Sophomore guard Braydey Hodgins has become Big Game Braydey for the Broncos over the last few weeks, being on quite a run over the last six games. Over the six-game stretch beginning Feb. 21 against Colorado State, Hodgins has led the Broncos with 16.4 points per game, while also averaging 5.8 rebounds and 3.83 assists per game. She has posted a pair of 20-point performances in two key contests, as well. With the Mountain West regular season title on the line March 3 at Wyoming, Hodgins scored a then-career-best 24 points with seven rebounds in Boise State s 67-63 victory. Four days later, in the conference tournament semifinals against Colorado State, Hodgins bested herself, going for 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting with five assists in the 76-51 win that sent the Broncos to the tournament title game. Finally, Hodgins scored 14 points with seven rebounds and six assists in the title game against Nevada. Hodgins was named to the All-Tournament Team, averaging 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds Boise State Women s Basketball www.broncosports.com

and 5.00 assists while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 81.3 percent from the line over Boise State s 3-0 performance. COLEMAN COMES THROUGH Redshirt sophomore A Shanti Coleman did something every basketball player dreams off when she beat the buzzer with a putback last Friday to win the Mountain West title for Boise State. As Marta Hermida s jumper with seconds to go rattled out, Coleman grabbed the tipped rebound and put it back, just beating the clock and giving Boise State a 62-60 win over Nevada. Coleman has been one of Boise State s top producers off the bench this season, and on Feb. 7, against New Mexico, she entered the starting lineup for the first time. Over the seven games in which Coleman has started since, she has improved her production even more, averaging 8.7 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 48.7 percent from the field. Four times in this span, Coleman has scored in double figures, highlighted by her career highs of 16 points and nine rebounds, going 7-for-10 from the field, in Feb. 17 s 58-47 win at Air Force. She has also grabbed at least eight rebounds in four of the seven games in which she s started. DEFENSE MAKING A DIFFERENCE Boise State s defense has been a major part of the team s current 10-game winning streak. Over this span, Bronco opponents are shooting just 35.7 percent from the field, including just 26.9 percent from 3-point range. Opponents are averaging just 56.9 points per game, while the Broncos own a scoring margin of plus-9.5 and a rebound margin of plus-4.3. Nevada, which shot 44.1 percent in the Mountain West title game, snapped a sixgame streak in which Boise State opponents had failed to crack 40 percent from the field. FOURTH-QUARTER DEFENSE IS NAILS Boise State s current nine-game winning streak has come about mainly due to the Broncos excellent fourth-quarter defensive work. Over the fourth quarters of the last 10 games, Bronco opponents are shooting just 32.2 percent (49-for-152) from the field, and 17.5 percent (7-for-40) from 3-point range. In fact, Bronco opponents missed 21-straight fourth-quarter 3-point attempts, from Utah State s final try back on Feb. 10 until Air Force hit its first fourth-quarter attempt from deep in the quarterfinals on March 6. Even then, the Falcons, and Colorado State on March 7, each only hit one 3-pointer apiece in the final frames of their respective contests. DEFENDING THE CROWN Boise State won its second-straight Mountain West Tournament title, and third in four seasons, with Friday s 62-60 championship game victory over Nevada. The Broncos will also became just the third Mountain West program to win consecutive tournaments, joining Fresno State (2013-14) and New Mexico (2003-05, 2007-08). ROAD WARRIORS Boise State will aim to bring its strong play on the road to Friday s firstr-round game, as key to the team s performance in Mountain West play this season was its 7-2 mark away from home. Boise State s nine true away wins this season (seven in conference, in addition to a 2-0 mark in non-conference), is the program s highest since winning 10 true road games in 2006-07. Boise State s 7-2 road record in Mountain West play this season was the conference s best, and the seven away wins matched the program record for most in conference play (1991-92, Big Sky). 3-POINT PARTY Boise State s 3-point shooting has improved since Mountain West season got underway, as the team is shooting a combined 39.6 percent over the last 21 games compared to the 28.6-percent figure they posted over 11 non-conference games. The Broncos have posted three games this conference season with 12 3-pointers made, and Jan. 24 at San Jose State hit a seasonhigh 14 treys, as they shot 63.6 percent (14- for-22) from behind the arc. HERMIDA MAKES HISTORY Junior guard Marta Hermida made Boise State history Nov. 26 against Corban, recording just the second triple-double in Bronco basketball history with her 22-point, 11-rebound, 10-assist performance. It was just the second triple-double in Boise State history (men s or women s), and came over 37 years after Karla Meier s 14-point, 15-rebound, 10-steal performance against Montana on Feb. 9, 1980. FAMILY BRAGGING RIGHTS Sophomore guard Braydey Hodgins faced off against older sister Delaney, a guard for Eastern Washington, for the second year in a row as the Broncos visited the Eagles on Dec. 3. Braydey improved to 2-0 head-to-head in the family rivalry as the Broncos beat the Eagles, 61-57. Most impressive in the contest was the fact that each Hodgins sister led her respective team in scoring, with Braydey pacing the Broncos with 14, and Delaney leading all players with a game-high 26. He brought with him 18 years of head coaching experience and a long record of success. Presnell currently ranks first in Bronco history for victories by a coach with a record of 243-166 (.594) overall. The 2017-18 season is his 31st as a collegiate head coach, and he owns a career record of 639-293 (.686). On Dec. 18, 2017, Presnell recorded his 600th career win as Boise State defeated Portland, 74-60, at Taco Bell Arena. With 616 career wins entering the 2017-18 campaign, Presnell ranks 55th among all NCAA women s basketball coaches and 30th among active coaches. Presnell s Bronco teams have reached the NCAA Tournament on four occasions (2007, 2015, 2017, 2018) while making six postseason appearances. Under his watch, Boise State has also won three regular-season titles (2007-08, 2018) and four conference tournament titles (2007, 2015, 2017, 2018). In 2016-17, Presnell guided the Broncos to a programrecord 25 wins as the team captured the Mountain West Tournament title and reached the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Since Boise State joined the Mountain West in 2011-12, the Broncos, under Presnell, are one of just two teams in the conference, along with Fresno State, to reach at least two NCAA Tournaments. The Broncos have recorded nine winning seasons over Presnell s 13-year tenure. After going 15-15 in his first season (2005-06), the Broncos recorded four-consecutive winning seasons, including a then-school-record 24 wins in both the 2006-07 (24-9) and 2007-08 (24-8) campaigns. Boise State currently has an active streak of five-straight winning seasons with four national postseason appearances over that stretch. Presnell s teams have gone 120-93 (.563) in conference games and an impressive 143-55 (.722) at home in Boise, including a perfect 14-0 mark in 2007-08. Over the course of his tenure Presnell s Broncos have pushed the tempo of the game. His teams are routinely ranked among the top scoring and rebounding teams in the conference and have set numerous school records along the way.
