JOHNNY JONES Head Coach 5th Year at LSU (17th Year as Head Coach) The burning desire and passion, combined with the love of his alma mater, has made Johnny Jones and LSU a strong fit together as he enters his fifth year as head coach. Jones has proven his recruiting ability with multiple top five ranked classes and 80 wins in four years at LSU, the most four-year win total by any head coach in school history. In fact, his first three wins in the 2016-17 season will push him past both C. C. Stroud and Press Maravich into fourth on the LSU Coaches win list behind only the three longest tenured coaches in school history who combined to handle the head coaching position for a period of 65 years. More notably, all four years he has posted non-losing seasons in the difficult Southeastern Conference and his 40 league wins is the second best start among present league coaches who have been on the job at least four years. But there are numbers that have to be taken into account when it comes to Jones first-four years at LSU: 13 Number of graduates in four years Every basketball player that has reached their senior season with the program under Jones has graduated from LSU, including three who returned to school during his tenure. 1 No. 1 NBA Draft selection (Ben Simmons, 2016) Simmons became just the second LSU player to be picked No. 1 in the draft, joining Shaquille O Neal (who Coach Jones was on the bench for as an assistant at LSU). 4 NBA Draft selections last three years. -- Johnny O Bryant III (2014, Milwaukee); Jarell Martin (1st rd, Memphis, 2015)) and Jordan Mickey (Boston, 2015); and, Ben Simmons (No. 1, Philadelphia) in 2016. 80 Wins (three shy of moving into fourth all-time at LSU) 2 Post-season appearances 9 All-SEC selections 3 -- Ranking in college basketball in 2016 in increase in average attendance from 8,897 in 2015 to 11,383 this past season. $200,000 Money raised for Baton Rouge area flood relief by the Shaquille O Neal-Coach Johnny Jones Golf Tournament. For Jones, just the fifth LSU alum to hold the top position in the men s basketball program and the third to have played and serve as head coach, his beliefs about reaching out to fans and giving them an exciting style of basketball to watch in the Maravich Center has been a strong selling point to fans and recruits alike. Jones, in his coaching career, has aimed to put teams on the floor that will play hard from start to finish and play a style of basketball that makes players want to come to LSU to showcase their talent in a team concept. His teams have averaged well over 70 points a game the last four years and has shown the ability to rally when necessary, including 10 times when down by five or more at the half. Jones has a job that he has been preparing for years to accept and that call to be the head coach at LSU came on April 13, 2012. He returned to a place he had spent many years playing and coaching. It was the dream job scenario and what he did after leaving LSU the first time prepared him to make this return successful. Jones believes in one of the long-time philosophies of LSU basketball HIT Hard. Intelligent. Together. It s a philosophy that LSU players learn very quickly that if they play hard, play with intelligence and play together, a lot of good things can happen. Throw in Family and you have the mantra of LSU Basketball under Johnny Jones. It s a family that has worked together at such times as flood relief, unloading a giant 18-wheeler of supplies from Shaq for a local area, or making an annual visit to the local hospital children s wing to sing Christmas carols to patients. It s reading in school to kids or visiting and learning from children at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired. It has been that way since day one for Coach Jones as he has gone out of its way to embrace all aspects of this community. This is Jones third career head coaching position as he served as the interim head coach at the University of Memphis during the 1999-2000 season and began his run as the head coach at the University of North Texas prior to the 2001-02 season. The Mean Green advanced to four of the last six Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship games, which included each of the final three seasons Jones was the head coach there (2010, 2011, 2012). Under Jones, the Mean Green averaged 21 wins per year over his last six seasons which included a school record 24 wins in 2010 and a pair of SBC titles and NCAA Tournament trips. When Johnny Jones suited up for his first game as an LSU Tiger against Colgate in the Great Alaskan Shootout on Nov. 28, 1980, it would mark the first of 121 games that he would play for LSU. Then the player would turn assistant coach and be on the bench with Coach Brown for another 407 contests. Jones is the only person in LSU history to both play (1981) and coach (1986, assistant) in an NCAA Final Four. After his Tigers went to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, he became the first person to play for the Tigers in an NCAA Tournament, serve as an assistant coach for LSU in the NCAA Tournament and to be LSU head coach in an NCAA Tournament game. After Coach Brown s retirement following the 1996-97 season, Jones moved to Memphis to serve as Associated Head Coach in 1998 and 1999. Jones was named the interim head coach at Memphis just prior to the 1999-00 season and then spent a year as an assistant coach in the SEC with Alabama (2001). He was named the head coach at North Texas on April 16, 2001, where he stayed until the LSU job became his in April 2012. LSU set the tone for the second half as Skylar Mays stole the inbounds pass to start the half and then on the next possession, Antonio Blakeney stole the ball away from Mizzou and went the length of the court for a layup and the LSU deficit was just one. The Tigers continued to take control of the half offensively while Missouri s first-half shooting did not continue. LSU shot 55.3 percent in the second half (21-of-38) and 4-of-8 at the arc. RALLY FROM HALFTIME DEFICIT For the second time this season, the Tigers were able to rally from a five-point or more halftime margin and score the win. LSU was down seven against North Carolina Central, 43-36, and rallied to win, 70-66. LSU was down five at Mizzou, 40-35, and won the game 88-77. It marked the 12th game in the Johnny Jones era that the Tigers have come from a five-or-more point margin down at the half to score the win. Three times in that span, the Tigers have won after having a double-digit deficit. The Mizzou game was the sixth of those wins that came on an opponent s court. SEC WINS ON THE ROAD Well, road teams are off to a strong start with nine wins in the first 12 SEC games played. Vandy came in and took down LSU in the opener on Dec. 29 and then the Tigers turned things around by winning at Missouri. For Coach Jones, it was his 20th true road win at LSU and his 15th in league play. BLAKENEY THREE STRAIGHT OVER 20 Sophomore Antonio Blakeney made it three straight games scoring over 20 points, hitting for 24 points against Mizzou after scoring 24 versus Vanderbilt (12/29) and 21 at Wake Forest (12/22). It marked the second time in his career he has had a run of three consecutive games of 20 points or greater. Ironically his three-game run as a freshman also had two road games 20 at Tennessee, 22 at Arkansas and 32 versus Florida. Blakeney now has 15 games of 20 or more points and since the start of the 2010-11 seasons, Blakeney is second among LSU players in total games of 20 points or more: Ben Simmons (2015-16) 18 Antonio Blakeney (2015-17) 15 Johnny O Bryant III (2011-14) 14 Jarell Martin (2013-2015) 12 Jordan Mickey (2013-15) 12 CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLES ANTONIO BLAKENEY (1) Game Date Pts Reb.. 2015-16 (1) McNeese 11/13/15 22 10 AARON EPPS (1) Game Date Pts Reb.. 2015-16 (1) Gardner-Webb 12/16/15 10 11 DUOP REATH (2) Game Date Pts Reb. 2016-17 (2) Wofford 11/12/16 23 14 Old Dominion 11/24/16 16 10 Breaking it down to those that have scored 24 points or more for LSU in the same time period, according to College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com, the numbers show: Jarell Martin (2013-15) 7 Antonio Blakeney (2015-17) 6 Jordan Mickey (2013-15) 6 Keith Hornsby (2014-16) 5 Johnny O Bryant (2012-14) 5 Blakeney is averaging a league high 33.2 minutes per game. VANDY (12/29) At the end of the distance shooting contest at the Maravich Center by LSU and Vandy on Dec. 29, LSU would set a record for most LSU three-pointers at the Maravich Center and tie the record for most three pointers in any game. The previous marks actually came in back-to-back games in 2003. On Feb. 26, 2003, at the Maravich Center as the Tigers made 16 threes against Auburn. The very next game, March 1, 2003, at Tennessee, the Tigers made the mark that was tied in the Vandy game of 17 made threes. The top five three-point games in the Johnny Jones era at LSU: 1. 17 vs. Vanderbilt, 12/29/16 2. 12 -- at Missouri, 3/2/13 2. 12 -- vs. Mississippi State, 2/16/13 4. 11 -- vs. Oklahoma, 1/30/16 4. 11 -- vs. NC State, 11/24/15 4. 11 -- vs. Georgia, 1/10/15 4. 11 -- vs. Alabama, 3/13/14 In the first two SEC games, the Tigers are 24-of-46 from the arc (52.2 percent), while opponents are 23-of-59 (39.0 percent) For the season, LSU has made 87-of-237 (36.7 percent), while opponents have made 13 more total (100-of-290 or 34.5 percent). THE GAME THIS AFTERNOON VERSUS MISSISSIPPI STATE (2:30 PM CT, SEC NETWORK) The Tigers make their first of two straight Saturday afternoon home games against Mississippi State, who comes in off a 68-58 loss to Alabama Tuesday night at the Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville. Alabama was able to jump out 32-20 at the intermission in the game as the Bulldogs shot 36.5 percent for the game (19-of-52) and just 4-of-21 from the arc. Alabama out rebounded Mississippi State, 43-26. State did force 17 turnovers and that resulted in 19 MSU points. Mario Kegler led State with 12 points while Tyson Carter had 10. Ben Howland is in his second season as the State coach as part of his long and distinguished career. He has won 424 games in four different stints as a head coach -- Northern Arizona, Pittsburgh, UCLA and Mississippi State. He led UCLA to three-consecutive Final Fours. JONES FOURTH WINNINGEST LSU HEAD COACH With the win against North Florida (11/18), Johnny Jones moved into fourth on the all-time coaching win list at LSU (and after the Charleston game now) with 87 wins. The Tigers improved in December, going 67-of-97 or 69.1 percent. The November stats included a 17-of-21 performance in the opener, but four games of 56 percent or less. In December, LSU made 14-of-17 against Texas Southern and 14-of-18 versus Charleston, but dropped off to 34-of- 51 (66.7%) in the final two games of the month. LSU was 11-of-16 at Mizzou Wednesday. Skylar Mays leads the starters at 75 percent (15-of-20), while Brandon Sampson is at 71.1 percent (27-of-38), Antonio Blakeney is 70.2 percent (33-of-47). 50 PERCENT FROM THE FIELD LSU shot 50 percent or better for the sixth time in a game this year, hitting 31-of-54 shots against Vandy (12/29), but for the first time this season, the Tigers were not the winners dropping them to 5-1 in games in which the Tigers final field goal percentage was 50 percent or better. In the 12 games, LSU has shot 50 percent or better in 12 different halves The Tigers have had two halves shooting 60 percent or better 60.8 percent against ODU (11/24) and 62.1 percent against Vandy (12/29). The loss for LSU was only the third in 39 games in the Johnny Jones era that LSU has shot 50 percent or better in a game (36-3). DUOP REATH LSU s first-year junior-college transfer forward has been in double figures in 10 games, but he has struggled with some foul problems in the two SEC games and scored just a combined 14 points. Against Vandy (12/29) he struggled to get shots off and was just 3-of-9 against Mizzou (1/4). He has made no fewer than four field goals in any of his 10 double digit games. He is averaging 13.8 points per game and 5.7 rebounds along with 2.0 blocks a game (7th in the league). Reath is shooting 55.6 percent for the season (74-of-133) and that is second in the league. The big man from Perth made it a good debut on Nov. 12 as he became the sixth LSU player in the Johnny Jones era to post a game of 20 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday s 91-69 win over Wofford Reath posted 23 points on 9-of-13 2016-17 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

POINT GUARDS GOOD ASSIST-TO-TURNOVER NUMBERS IN SEC GAMES In the midst of everything that happened in the Vandy game, the three players playing the point guard position on the night Skylar Mays, Jalyn Patterson and in his season debut, Branden Jenkins, combined in their 63 minutes (which included time when both Mays and Patterson and Patterson and Jenkins were on the floor together) combined for 12 assists and no turnovers. Mays had four assists in 18 minutes (11 points); Jalyn Patterson had six assists in 26 minutes (11 points); and, Jenkins had two assists in 19 minutes (5 points). Against Mizzou, both Mays and Patterson had no turnovers with each having three assists in the game. Those two are tied at the top of the league conference game standings with a perfect assist-to-turnover ratio after the first two games. For the season, Mays is seventh on the league with a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio with 51 assists and 23 turnovers. Patterson is ninth at 1.9 (42 assists, 22 turnovers). JENKINS FINALLY SEES THE FLOOR After dressing for three games, junior college transfer Branden Jenkins was finally able to get on the floor in the Vandy game (12/29). He played 19 minutes and hit 2-of-6 field goals including a trey in scoring five points. He received the 0+ minutes in the Mizzou game after coming on the floor in the first half and quickly picking up two fouls. Jenkins was discovered to have an issue in his leg during his preseason physical that needed surgery and so he was unable to play in the first 11 games. Jenkins, who hails from the Chicago suburb of Maywood, Illinois, averaged 15.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists at Lee College in 2015-16. TIGERS HAVE LOCAL CONNECTION STRONG AGAIN The Tigers have a Baton Rouge connection working again this season with scholarship players sophomore Brandon Sampson and freshmen Skylar Mays and Wayde Sims joined by senior Brandon Bridgewater and walk-on Reed Vial hailing from Baton Rouge. Another walk-on, Marshall Graves, prepped in Baton Rouge (at U-High) but is from Ponchatoula, Louisiana. In all, the 14-player LSU roster has eight players from the state of Louisiana. SKYLAR MAYS Baton Rouge s Skylar Mays made the most of his first start at point guard for the Tigers in the Wofford game (11/12), scoring 10 points with six assists and no turnovers. Mays was 5-of-9 from the field and played 23 minutes with two steals. He did not score against Southern Miss (11/15), but for the second straight game he had six assists in 20 minutes of play. Mays started the first four games of the season, but played 42 combined minutes in the ODU and VCU games (11/24, 11/25) scoring 20 points, including 14 on 5-of-7 shooting in the VCU contest. Mays did the job for the Tigers off the bench against UH (11/29) and while he admitted he would have rather been 1-for rather than not making a field goal attempt (0-4). But he did have 11 assists in the game and just one turnover in 23 minutes. Mays 11 assists in the win over Houston was the most by an LSU player in the Johnny Jones era as head coach and he became the fifth play in that time span to record 10 or more assists joining Ben Simmons, Tim Quarterman, Josh Grady and Charles Carmouche. For the season with 10 total starts, Mays is averaging 5.6 points and 3.9 assists per game, ninth in SEC stats. His 11 points against Vandy was his third double figure scoring game of the season. Mays played at University High in Baton Rouge before transferring to Findlay Prep for his senior season. JALYN PATTERSON ALSO CONTRIBUTING AT THE POINT Junior Jalyn Patterson, who has been featured primarily at the off-guard position during his first two years and who will continue to be featured at the position this season, moved into the starting lineup for three games. Patterson scored just one point against UNF (11/18) after back-to-back 7-point games, but Patterson had a career high eight assists in the game. Patterson had seven assists in the VCU game, but has also shown a guard s rebounding mentality with nine boards against Wichita State (11/23) and seven in the ODU win (11/24). He has had two consecutive double figure scoring games of 11 each versus Vanderbilt (12/29) and at Mizzou (1/4). Patterson is now averaging 5.8 points per game, 3.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists. His 1.5 steals per game average is ninth best in the league. But it never quite transferred to the last regular season as little nagging injuries slowed him at times and the Madison Prep (Baton Rouge) star averaged just 4.0 points in 13.2 minutes per game. But this year, Sampson is averaging 28.9 minutes per game, 11.9 points and 3.5 rebounds. He is 55-of-108 from the field (50.9%) after shooting just 32.1 percent as a freshman. In fact there are some categories in 13 games that are already past all of last year s numbers: FR. 27 gms/so. 13 gms FGM 35/55 3FGM 18/18 FT 19/27 REB 32/45 PTS 107/155 Sampson has nine games in double figures this year, but his most impressive by far was the 30 minutes in the Old Dominion (11/24) win when he hit 7-of-10 field goals with a trey and helped seal the game as part of his 9-of-9 effort at the free throw line. It all added up to a career high of 24 points, topping the 18 he had a year ago twice with one of those coming in a neutral site tournament in Brooklyn. Against Charleston (12/19), he posted his second 20-point game, hitting 8-of-12 field goal attempts. REATH, HAYWARD GETTING NOTICED IN HOME COUNTRY With both Duop Reath and Kieran Hayward coming from Australia, basketball twitter sites in that country have been keeping an eye on these two and giving both of them some notice down there. Again this year, several LSU games are aired (with the time change) as mid-day affairs on the ESPN Australia/New Zealand network. Reath hails from Perth, moving there as a youngster from South Sudan, an area his family was forced to leave to avoid the civil war in that country. Hayward is a freshman from Sydney who had some of the three-point shooting range and lack of fear when shooting of a guy who was very successful for a couple of years here from the arc, Keith Hornsby. HAYWARD GETTING MORE PLAYING TIME All though he did not play against Vandy (12/29), freshman Kieran Hayward has been able in some games to find his mark. He played a season tying high of 17 minutes against Texas Southern (12/17), scoring 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting that included two treys with three rebounds. He poured in a trey to close out a long scoring run for LSU in the Mizzou win. Hayward is averaging 10.9 minutes a game and 1.8 points. For Sims it was his season high of 14 points, his third double figure game off the Tiger bench. Dad and former LSU player Wayne Sims has to be happy with how his son has played, averaging 5.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 16.8 minutes a game in the first 13 contests. More success came in the Mizzou game as Sims hit 5-of-7 shots for 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists. In the last two games, Sims is 10-of-15 from the field, 4-of-7 from the arc with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Sims also was a multi-time state title holder at University High in Baton Rouge. Dad Wayne played for LSU from 1987-91 under Coach Dale Brown and an assistant coach named Johnny Jones. Wayne Sims is No. 33 on the school scoring list with 1,107 points, topped by a 13.3 scoring average his sophomore year (1988-89). He is also 26th on the school rebound list with 603 boards. The elder Sims is one of 22 players to have 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. The Sims join such family combos as Geert and Shane Hammink, Pete and Josh Maravich, Collis Jr. and Collis III and Garrett Temple, and, Rick and Paul Wolfert to name some. He posted his fourth double figure game of the season at Mizzou (1/4) with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Epps started the season with 17 against Wofford (11/12), 14 versus North Florida (11/18) and 11 against Houston (11/19) and is averaging 16.4 minutes per game, 6.4 points and 4.3 rebounds. Bridgewater scored two points at WF (12/22) and four points against Vandy (12/29). He is averaging 0.9 points per game and has appeared in seven games. 2016-17 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

JUNIOR ELBERT ROBINSON III Elbert Robinson has played in 12 of the games this season and is available to give the Tigers help inside if necessary and he may be called on more with the dismissal of Craig Victor II. Robinson has a high of five against North Florida and has scored in eight games this year. SO HOW YOUTHFUL IS THIS ROSTER? Last year, Kenpom.com had LSU s level experience as the 320th of the 351 Division I teams. Kenpom.com ranks LSU s experience at 1.08 or No. 328 in experience on the chart. Four other SEC teams have lower experience rankings than LSU. FAST PACE, POSSESSIONS The Tigers have been known under Coach Jones as a fast-paced offensive squad and have averaged over 70 possessions a game throughout the first four years, including 74-plus a season ago. Through 13 games, the Tigers are averaging 74.7, at this moment equaling LSU s season number last year. RECORD YEAR FOR TIGERS IN NBA The Tigers opened the 2016-17 NBA season with a record eight players on NBA rosters: BRANDON BASS -- Los Angeles Clippers (12th year); MARCUS THORNTON -- Washington Wizards (8th year); GARRETT TEMPLE -- Sacramento Kings (7th year); JUSTIN HAMILTON -- Brooklyn Nets (3rd year); JORDAN MICKEY -- Boston Celtics (2nd year); JARELL MARTIN -- Memphis Grizzlies (2nd year); BEN SIMMONS -- Philadelphia 76ers (1st year); TIM QUARTERMAN -- Portland Trail Blazers (1st year). LUNCHEON MONDAY; TIGERS ON ROAD WEDNESDAY; BACK HOME NEXT SATURDAY The week starts Monday as Coach Jones will host his Tipoff Luncheon presented by Hub International at L Auberge Hotel and Casino s Bon Temps Buffet at Noon. LSU will travel to College Station to face Texas A&M on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Tigers are back at home on Saturday, Jan. 14, against Alabama and that will be another 2:30 p.m. start time. Both games will be on the LSU Sports Radio Network and televised by the SEC Network.
