The nsttutonal page has been renovated three tmes wthn the past few years as technology has advanced. t wll be ntroduced n early March, and t wll replace the exstng ste at www.rrarst.edu; whch has drawn crtcsm lately. Tm Masse, chef college relatons offcer, sad he s pleased wth the new ste. "The frst ste was not graphcally appealng," he sad. "Now, on ths second ste, there s too much nformaton. On the new. one there are only sx broad categores that make t easer to use and navgate." Accordng to Barbara McMullen, actng drector of academc computng, havng a more user-frendly ste s only one of the advantages. "One mportant aspect of the new ste s that t caters to a broader audence," she sad. 'The nsttutonal page has to play to slower modems because we want those folks to come n and see what we have to offer." Academc Computng put the fnal touches on the ste, but was not nvolved wth the ntal development. Accordng to Ann Wnfeld, drector of enrollment communcaton, she frst approached an ndependent desgner to create the ste n order to meet tme constrants. The desgner created the frst and second pages of the ste, whch were rejected because of a sudden change n focus. Wnfeld sad she then approached academc computng to fnsh the ste, after realzng t would be too expensve to contnue wth the desgner. Wnfeld sad she s pleased wth the product. "[The ste] s modern, clean, sophstcated, and represents Marst n a much more postve way," she sad. "Vsually, the pctures represent Marst of today. They show our students and our faculty nteractng." Masse sad updatng the ste was mportant because many people use ts resources. He sad he receves between 30 and 50 electronc malngs per week as a result of the ste.. "Most of them,"-he sad, "are from prospectve; students, alumn, reporters, and communty people nterested n Marst events." He sad the changes wll hopefully entce more people to look at Marst.. "To be a compettve ste you don't want people to get bored wth t," Masse sad. "We want people to say, 'Wow, ths s really new, let me explore wth t a lttle bt."' The awards are granted to.10 full-tme students n ther junor year, based on mert after presentng a portfolo and a completed applcaton. Last year's amount of each scholarshp was $3,000. Molnar to speak at 51 st commencement by DARVL RCHARD. -. Crcle Correspondant U.S. Rep. Susan Molnar has agreed to gve ths year's commencement address, puttng an unusually early end to the search for a graduaton speaker. Whle most pursuts for a speaker carry on untl early sprng, Molnar, a Republcan congresswoman from New York's 13th Dstrct, accepted the nvtaton late last semester. Tm Masse, Marst's chef college relatons offcer, sad many people have ther eyes on Molnar as she rapdly clmbs to the top of the poltcal ladder. "She's arsng star, both n the Republcan Party and n Congress," Masse sad. "She s part of one of Washngton's power couples," he added, alludng to her marrage to Rep. Bll Paxon (R-NY). Student Government Presdent Pat Mara sad ths year's early decson was largely the result of student collaboraton.: Mara sad the dea of pursung Molnar frst ht hm last August whle he was watchng the Republcan Natonal Conventon. Bob Dole chose Molnar to gve the keynote speech durng the conventon. Whle researchng the possblty of brngng the congresswoman to Marst, Mara dscovered that one senor had a personal connecton. The student's father s edtor of the Staten sland Advance, Molnar's hometown newspaper, and knows Molnar. Mara then proposed the dea to the senor class offcers and Presdent Denns Murray to get ther feedback. Chrs Kadus, senor class presdent, sad he dd not mmedately recognze Molnar Vname, but then realzed who she was after Mara mentoned the Republcan Conventon. "All four [class] offcers lke the dea," Kadus sad. "She's a natonal fgure wth a lot of credbltyrghtnow.". Mara sad one of the frst thngs that grabbed hm about Molnar was he lked the dea of havng a woman speaker. "We haven't had a woman speaker for some tme," Mara sad. Masse sad Molnar s also a good choce because the college has not had a poltcal speaker n many years. Sen. Alfonse D'Amato was one of the last poltcal leaders to send off the senor class, back n the late 1980s. A RSNG STAR Speakng at the Republcan Conventon may have launched Molnar to the forefront of the poltcal arena, but she was far from beng a poltcal unknown before that. Last December, Glamourmagazne named the 38-year-old congresswoman "Woman of the Year," and n 1994,77mecalledher one of the 40 most nfluental people under 40. For the last two years, Molnar has been the hghest-rankng woman n the House leadershp and was reelected to a fourth term last fall wth 61 percent of the vote. Her rsng stature has gven ths mother of a 1-year-old daughter a chance to tackle some hghprofle ssues. Please see MOLNAR, page 4.

Marst and Beyond Jury awards^ $25 mllon n puntve, >-J»!* "»-.»-.- damages to Brown and Goldman famles- THE CRCLE February 13,1997 Both partes contnue to dspute Smpson's worth SANTA MONCA, CAlforna (CNN) Thejury n the OJ. Smpson cvl tral reached a verdct Monday concernng puntve damages aganst the former football star, decdng that he must pay $25 mllon to the famles of Ncole Brown Smpson and Ron Goldman, $12.5 mllon each. The jury's decson on puntve damages, whch are ntended to punsh the defendant for malcous wrongdong, came after about fve hours of delberatons. Last Tuesday ths same jury ordered Smpson to pay the Goldman famly $8.5 mllon n compensatory damages. However, ther verdct Monday s far from fnal. "Excessve damages are grounds for appeal and a reversal n many states," CNN legal analyst Roger Cossack told audence members on CNN's TalkBack Lve Monday. "f they came out wth somethng that was clearly out of scope, sometmes the judge wll change t hmself. Or the partes can get together and agree" on a lower payment, he sad. Cvl attorney Howard Prce agreed. "Hstorcally, t's qute common for the tral court, f not the appellate court, to cut down puntve damages because puntve damages qute often are exorbtant, or at lest they're vewed that way by the courts," he sad. f Smpson does seek an appeal he stll wll have to pay a prce. n order to hold off credtors durng the appeal process, the defendant must show the ablty to pay hs blls. Usually, a defendant must put up a bond equal to 150 percent of the jury award. Smpson must have collateral to back up such a bond. Fndng so much collateral could be dffcult, snce he stll owes legal fees from hs cvl, crmnal and chld custody trals, not to menton the $8.5 mllon compensatory damages already leved n me cvl tral. Smpson's lawyers are lkely to argue that the puntve damages are unreasonable. n court, durng the puntve damages phase of the cvl' tral, Smpson attorney Robert Baker sad Smpson s "n effect, wthout assets. Hence, puntve damages are totally napproprate n ths case." The prosecuton argued the opposte. "Mr. Smpson has a lot of money, n the neghborhood of many mllons of dok lars," sad Danel Petrocell, the attorney for the famly of Ron Goldman. The plantffs say Smpson's assets are worth $15.7 mllon. They nclude hs future earnngs n that estmate a plantffs' celebrty marketng expert testfed that Smpson would be worth $24.5 mllon, f pad out today. Accordng to the defense, Smpson sn't worth less than nothng. Consderng the compensatory damage award aganst Smpson, they sad last week thatrhe was $9.3 mllon n debt. Hs attorneys also dened that hs future earnngs would be worth anywhere near plantff estmates, argung aganst estmates that hs autograph s worth $60. Nether estmate ncludes hs retrement and penson funds, whch cannot be sezed by the court. Smpson's defense lsts the retrement funds at just over $4 mllon. A CNN-Tme Magazne nvestgaton found Smpson's net worth to be about $2.5 mllon, most of t n penson and retrement funds. The CNN-Tme nvestgaton also found that snce 1993, Smpson has sold most of hs property; wth the.excepton of hs house and a San Francsco condomnum where hs elderly mother lves. Prce also sounded skeptcsm towards the plantffs' hgh estmate of Smpson's worth. "For the plantffs to say mat ms man has the possblty of makng $25 mllon n the future seems problematcal. don't see where he's gong to do any endorsements except possbly for knves," Prce sad. Valentne's Day s approachng, and the thought of the holday s makng many students thnk about that certan someone. But what s love? s there such a thng as love at frst sght? What about soul mates? s there a specal person out there only for you? What about relatonshps at college? These are some of the questons that students wll be thnkng about ths Feb. 14. Senor Chrstna Papadopoulos sad she beleves the word "love" deals wth uncondtonal trust. " am n love when can trust my lfe wth someone," she sad. Melane Berros, junor, sad love s about learnng about a part of yourself you dd not know before. "Love s a werd knowng. You just know ths person makes you feel ncredbly dfferent," she sad. "You feel safe, needed, and sexy." Laurence Sullvan, assstant professor of phlosophy and relgous studes, sad the defnton of love deals more wth the souls of two people. "Love s the qualty of one's soul that reaches out and allows oneself to share t wth eaeh other," he sad. For several students, the word love has a deeper meanng than people talk about. Many people wll tell someone they love them, hut do they really mean t? Papadopoulos sad that the term love s used too loosely. 'The word love s abused. People say t THECRCLE February 13,1997 and they don't thnk of the real meanng behnd t," she sad. Kathy Gazzllo, a sophomore hstory major, also sad the word s used too much. " defntely thnk that the word love s thrown around a lot on campus;" she sad. Berros sad that sayng the word "love" to each other takes many more than communcaton. " couldn't say f the word s used too loosely because haven't been n love here," she sad. "From past relatonshps, 've learned that the bg three takes tme and respect. Wthout that, the word love s worthless." Junor Ronald Lyp sad he beleves the word s used to further the stuaton. "A lot of people use the word "love" to further the relatonshp. People use the word to make thngs better durng the break-up perod," he sad. "People mstake lust for love." Lyp sad people n college can beleve n love, but many are not n love. " beleve n love, but don't beleve people beng n love, especally college students," he sad. "Most of the students have only been datng for 2-3 years. They don't know everythng there s to know about one another." Sullvan sad he agrees wth ths. "[Love] means somethng dfferent for everyone," he sad. "As the relatonshp develops, understandng for love develops." Sullvan also sad people must dare each other to defne love for themselves. "You have to challenge each other and be conscous of ther defnton of love," Please see ROMANCE, page 6. Casual sex prompted by college lfe by STEPHANE MERCURO,. News Edtor, Atttudes towards sex have become casual at Marst College. Alcohol, new-found freedom, and a loss of nhbtons are all contrbutng to the rse of casual sex. Students, such as sophomore Joseph Scotto, sad they agree that many students are havng sex wth people they have jurr met. "People are lookng for a common ground to buld a relatonshp on, as well as a way to grow up too fast," Scotto sad. " don't really thnk t's somethng to rush nto." Melssa Ruot, a junor and resdent assstant of Leo, sad there s a slght pressure to have sex wth an acquantance. "Thete s a pressure for people to be accepted as an ndvdual person," she sad. "Sex s a way to gan that acceptance." Ruot :,ad alcohol plays a large part of casual sexual encounters., "People come n so drunk and under the nfluence, they don't know what they are dong," she sad. "New students, especally freshmen, are explorng ther newfound freedom, whch they don't always know how to handle." Junor Ryan Soucy sad he agrees wth Ruot. " thnk people may have feelngs for someone, but the alcohol wll make them go home wth someone they wouldn't normally go home wth," he sad. Scotto, however, sad he dsagrees. "Alcohol does not play a part n a sexual encounter because no matter how drunk you arc, you stll know what you are dong," he sad. "You stll have the power to stop t." Soucy sad there are not many people who care f there s love nvolved n the relatonshp "n college, not as many people care about love n a sexual relatonshp," he sad. Junor Ronald Lyp sad sex can happen wthout love, as well as wthout a relatonshp. ' 'There doesn't have to be love nvolved to be havng sex wth someone," he sad. "A lot of my frends are havng one nght stands wthout beng n love." Junor Donna Nastas sad love s an essental part of a sexual relatonshp. " thnk there needs to be a strong foundaton of love before sex s ntroduced n a relatonshp," she sad. "A lot of people don't take sex as serously, though, and don't really care f there s love or not." Scotto sad love may play a part for some people.* 'There sn't necessarly an absence of love n these relatonshps. People just have dfferent defntons of what love s," he sad. Lyp sad other people's sex lves are farly well known around campus. ' "You hear about t everywhere, from everyone," he'sad. "People have those 'nghtly talks' "wth ther frends, and you can fnd put from there." Scotto sad the topc of sex s a huge form of gossp. " " hear about sex n every possble way; through gossp, rumors and even overhearng^ njhe hallway," he sad. "You can hear who's havng sex wth who n every possbleway." Soucy 4sad he, feels one can fnd out about anyone's sex lfe. "You hear a lot of conversaton. A lot of people gossp about sex," he sad. Nastas sad she hears about sex on campus from her group of frends. " never realzed how many people are havng one nght stands and casual sex untl pad attenton to what was beng sad when we talked," she sad. "So many people are havng casual sex on campus." Lyp sad he feels that although many people are havng ntercourse, many are engagng n oral sex, nstead. " thnk that so many more people are havng oral sex, rather than sex," he sad. "t seems lke t s not as bg of a deal as sex s, so more people don't feel as bad about dong t on a one nght stand." m Roorv\ y V6H A/oto 0J KUOUJ.6q#y Lo\sS 15 SUN'fc!' Atttudes towards sex altered durng college years for many students by MCHAEL GOOT Managng Edtor Although sex plays an mportant part n the lves of many college students, t s often not treated as a serous subject. Laura Agnello, a junor communcatons major, sad college students do not have a serous atttude about sex. "f they dd, they wouldn't go out and get wasted and hop nto bed wth the frst person they kss," she sad. Many tmes, young people change ther sexual practces when they come to college. Ther atttudes about sex are often ^nfluenced by meda and peers. The freer socal envronment of college also mpacts sexual behavor.. Ncole Ornek, a freshman, sad college students treat sex too casually and many see nothng wrong wth ther behavor^ " thnk they thnk t's part of college the nght scene and gong put,".she sad. ; Ornek also sad casual relatonshps have escalated among college students. "t's not just kssng anymore," she sad. "t's bascally sex." Sophomore Chrstopher Henry also sad college students do not take sex very serously. "t should be treated as a very serous subject, but from what 've seen, t doesn't seem to be as serous," he sad. Stephen Lapolla, a freshman hstory major, sad people do not treat sex very serously. "For. the most part, thnk t's more of a casual atttude that people have," he sad. The freedom of college seems to allow some expermentaton wth sex. Sean O'Relly, resdent drector of upper Champagnat, sad students are probably gong to be curous about sex and mght be wllng to experment at college. " thnk they're probably lkely to have questons about t when they frst come to college and when you add n the W^ wth \rour S Cft W lower nhbtons of alcohol," he sad. Accordng to O'Relly, relatonshps are mportant for many college students: 'They see a relatonshp wth another person as a very mportant part of the college experence," he sad. "Some seek to fnd love, some seek to fnd compasson, some seek a sense of belongng n another person." Chrs Oertel, resdent drector of Leo Hall, sad college allows students the opportunty to nteract wth a whole new group of people, and ths changes ther atttudes. "There's a whole new socal atmosphere that they have to adjust to, and that atmosphere presents them wth opportuntes that may not have been avalable," he sad. Accordng tq Laurence SuUvan, asssvvtant^professof of relgous studes, some students are more lkely to experment wth sex than others' 'Those that are from very restrctve backgrounds where they felt there was no freedom, perhaps they are more lkely to be the ones tryng thngs out," he sad. Many of you probably know me from Rugby, the HuMarsts, or as the kd who: got fred from hs R.A. poston. But, rght now am here to tell you about the Mghty Mghty Bosstones show ths past weekend at the Chance. All have to say s, many of you mssed an ncredble show for the low prce of $15. am an avd Bosstones fan, and coughed up the money and got a show worth three tmes more. The openng band, the Rack of Tears (or, f you say t fast, Racketeers) was a 50's style sound complete wth greaser looks rght out of the move "Grease." was not terrbly thrlled wth them, but the dfferent sounds and styles were enough to peak my nterest. Also, t s always good to hear somethng new and dfferent, and let me tell you, they were dfferent. They sounded as f ther songs were pumpngrghtout of Marty McFly'sdeloranonNov.5,1955. Wth a funky beat from a stand- up bass, t made me want to go back to last summer and do the twst. The next band to play was one of my favorte ska bands, the Petasters. Don't let the name confuse you. These guys crank out songs at a break-neck pace that wll leave you at the end of the set wonderng what happened. They played favortes, such as Magge May, Freak Show and Grl Take t Easy. 12 THE CRCLE, February 13,1997 Some Valentne's love tps from the Vdeo Guy by Jm Dzezynsk Valentne's Day s upon us. Love s n the ar, and the season for datng s rght around the corner. That s why, for the second week n a row, shall transcend my role as vdeo guy to gve advce for the sophstcated dateready college student of the 90s. College s a tme for love, love, love, so where better to get the "low-down" on all the secrets of the datng scene than from your most trusted Crcle columnst-me! The feast of Valentne's day orgnated n Rome, where the ancent Romans celebrated the fertlty rtes of certan brds. Ths celebraton was called "Lupercla" (translated: Luper: the feast of, cala: brdy nooke.) The legend of Valentne also ncorporated the myth of Cupd, the chubby cherub who, when n range of two young people on the cusp of romance, shoots one of them wth an arrow n the butt. Ths supposedly caused the two young people to fall n love, but n realty caused the person not ht to pull an arrow out of the butt of hs/her lover. f that sn't true love, don't know what s! Nowadays, Valentne's day s the holday where you let that "specal someone" know how much you really lke hm or her. Then, you can have the "gddy" feelng of havng the person not only tell you that you should have spent the money on her flowers on acne cream for yourself, but also that she would rather date a monkey wth odor problems. f you are lucky, her boyfrend wll not punch all your teeth out, whch brngs up a certan problem: Let's say, ntentonally or otherwse, you look at a grl datng a fellow whose name can be nothng other than Thor. Thor comes up to you and says, "Are you lookng at my grlfrend?!" Do you answer: A)No sr, 'm not, to whch he wll respond "What, you thnk she's ugly?" and promptly beat you up. B)Yes sr, was, to whch he wll respond by sayng "Grrrrr" and beatng you up. QMumble a few random sounds hopng t wll translate nto hs natve tongue and prevent you from gettng beat up. D)Tell the man you thnk he bears a strkng resemblance to Guy de Maupassant and hope that "short-crcuts" hs bran cell long enough to make a run for t. Remember, you can always gve your Valentne to one of the fun-lovng nmates at your local county jal. They love to get mal! For those of you lucky enough to have secured a mate for the season of love, here are some datng deas for young couples n the Poughkeepse area. 1)-Sknny dppng n the cy Hudson, a super slppery cavalcade of fun! Just lke Doughboy! 2)-Guys, te your date to the tran tracks and rescue her from the speedng locomotve at the last mnute, just lke n those old slent moves. Carry whatever parts of her are left back to banks of the Hudson for a lttle "ntmate" moment where you try tofndher mssng lmbs. 3)-"'m wth StupdT-Shrts!" for sale at varous locatons. _4)-Go for a romantc mdnght walk through downtown Poughkeepse, where the soft glow of polce lghts and soothng sound of gunshots n the nght wll provde the perfect atmosphere to fall n love! 5)-Fm volunteerng my servces as a van-drver to take you to all of the romantc sghts n the Md- Hudson valley. Do not let the fact my van does not have any wndows dscourage you from enjoyng the trp. You can stll make use of the couch! Some of you wth last week's paper on hand may have notced Jerome Pckett, featured n the spotlght secton, descrbed hmself as beng "very sngle." Lades, need say more? What you may also not know s that there are other people n the newspaper who are also wthout a Valentne date, such as myself. That s probably why have to wrte a column on vdeo games! n fact, the last date had was wth Prncess Toadstool. Ha-ha; just kddng! Get t? Prncess Toadstool from Super Maro Brothers! guess am just "choosy," rght?"that's t! f only they put my pcture n, Jerome and could have double dated some "foxy" Marst beautes... Anywse, whoever you spent your Valentne's Day wth, you can thank me later for the great tps. For those of you who have not had a date n a whle, do not be dscouraged, t could be worse. Plus, hey, who meets any grls at college? Come on, get real! n other very mportant news, today s the brthday of Henry Rollns, a pretty romantc fellow n hs ownrght!o.k. lovebrds, go to t! THE CRCLE, February 13,1997 14 Swm team to Women look for revenge at MAAC hostmaacs McCann Center may determne Marst'sfate Despte the fantastc seasons by both men's and women's swmmng and dvng teams last year, there was stll a sen.se of unfnshed busness. The men's and women's swmmng and dvng teams both had outstandng Sports Wth Smtty years last season, but somethng was stll mssng. Unlke last year at ths tme, the The men topped off a great season by wnnng the Metropol buzz down at McCann s not about the men's basketball team. Ths tan Assocaton Athletc Conference champonshp. The women, year, everyone s nterested wth the men's and women's swmmng and who also had a great season, fell dvng (earns. short of the ttle by a measly oneand-a-half ponts. There s nothng new ths year n terms of wnnng. The teams are stll "At me end-of-the-year banquet ddn't want de female ath swmmng and dvng well and stll wnnng but there s a new twst to letes to feel bad, or the men athletes to feel too good," Head the scenaro. The men's team s lookng to wn the Metro Atlantc Athletc Conference champonshp agan told everybody that f the Coach Larry VanWagner sad. " and the women look toredeemthemselves but ths tme look to capture the ttle at home. Wth Marst hostng the MAAC champonshps, startng today and concludng Sunday, much attenton has been brought to the swmmng and dvng teams. The questons to ask are: 1) Can the men handle the attenton and pressure of the exctement at ther home and.2) Can the women step up to the level to actually capture the ttle ths year. f the men wn agan ths year, they wll be only the second team..at Marst n any sport to capture three consecutve conference ttles. (Only basketball can boast the "same feat. They wll have at least a few more years to worry about dong that agan!) f the women wn, they wll redeem themselves after losng to Loyola by 1.5 ponts last year at the MAACs. The team has a lot on the lne ths year at the MAAC champonshps. Snce the meet s beng held at Marst, t means so much more. The Red Foxes can feel comfortable n ther normal surroundngs whle at the same tme feelng the pressure to wn on ther home turf. Besdes the swmmers and dvers knowng the pool, the lghtng, the temperature of the water and the ar, and the dvng boards, the fact that they wll have ther home fans wll gve them a great advantage. Even though the regulars wll be there, the Red Foxes wll get support from the student body. am confdent that the Marst students wll show support manly because t s the champonshp. Ths s the meet that means everythng and personally wsh the swmmers, the dvers, and the coaches good luck. From what have seen n terms of preparng the faclty n the past few weeks, the overall operaton of the meet locks to be a success. Although we have one of the best facltes n the MAAC due to a separate dvng well, stll have one queston; Where are all the people gong to go? There wll be over 300 people on the pool deck at any one tme and f you haven't notced, there's not much room. Also, there s a very lmted bleacher and spectator area so f you want good seats, get there early and settle n for the day. Chrs Smth s the Crcle's Sports Edtor Marty Snacola women's team lost a champonshp, we all lost, and f the men wn a champonshp, we all wn." Nobody cannot argue, however, that the Marst swmmng program as a whole was stll one of the best programs around. "Marst had the best swmmng and dvng program n the conference last year," VanWagner sad. The Marst program s n ts second season n the MAAC, and startng tonght wll be hostng the MAAC champonshps for the. frst tme. t wll be the frst tme that Marst has hosted any knd of champonshps snce they hosted the Metropoltan Collegate Swmmng and Dvng Conference champonshps from 1984 to 1987. "We have one of the best facltes n the MAAC," VanWagner sad. "Our prmary advantage we have s the fact that we have a separate dvng well," he sad. VanWagner sad the men's team s ready for the "fnal exam," as he lkes to call t, because they have been preparng snce the begnnng. " beleve you have to utlze the full 21 weeks of the season to prepare the athletes for ths one competton," he sad. Senor Danelle DeGefonmo and junor Chrs Blackwell lead the always sold dvng squad, who wll be lookng to repeat upon ts performance at last year's champonshps. Marst dvers Jan Martn (a 1996 graduate) and Blackwell ganed MAAC dver honors. Dvng Coach Melane Bolstad also sad the season s to get ready for the champonshp. "The whole year s n preparaton for the MAAC champonshp," she sad. A tough, 64^55 loss to St. Francs (PA) sunk the Red Foxes to 3-11 n the Northeast Conference and 4-17 overall. The Red Flash of. Marst, meanwhle, was comng off a wn, but head coach Dave Magarty's squad was stll strugglng to stay out of last place n the league standngs. The game began slowly; after eght full mnutes of play, the score was ted at 3, ard even after the teams pcked up de pace, the half-tme score saw Marst leadng, 22-20. The low scores were due to both nepttude on offense, and sold defense. The Red Flash and the Red Foxes both shot less dan 33% from the floor n the frst half, and both teams commtted careless, costly turnovers. And when a : shot dd head toward the basket, Marst's Tom Kenney: ard Melvn Scott of St, Francs were there to turn them away; the two bg men' combned for seven blocks n the frst 20 mnutes. The game remaned close through much of the second half. When St. Francs pulled ahead by seven (t's largest lead untl the fnal mnute), Magarty nserted junor guard Joe Taylor, whose two consecutve steals sparked an 11 pont run, gvng the Red Foxes a bref lead. The Red Flash's bg men took control at that ponty wth 6'7" Erc Taylor and"6'6" Emmanuel Adekunle scorng seven straght ponts, and handng St. Francs a lead t would not relnqush. Wd just over 3:00 remanng, Marst had narrowed me gap to 51-49, when freshman Joe McCurdy led a break towards the St. Francs basket. He lad the ball up on the glass for what would have been a tyng bucket, but t got swatted away by Adekunle a play that bordered on goaltendng. No call was made, however, and the Red Flash gathered the rebound and raced down the floor, ; settng up Sotrs Aggelou'.s fourth three-ponter of the nght, and stealng de momentum from Marst for good.. " saw the shot go up, and tred to contest t," explaned Adekunle n hndsght. " was just tryng to block the shot...f the refs don't blow the whstle, keep playng." McCurdy added hs thoughts on the controversal play. "We were all thnkng about the refs, and they just pushed the ball back up. As a result, Aggelou ht the 3- ponter, and that was t." Magarty, whose dsparagng comments on the offcatng after a game earler ths month earned hm a reprmand from the NEC, agreed mat the no-call was the turnng pont n the game.
