The Herons are making their 10th appearance in the Big Dance. HELLO STRANGER: The Herons and the Yellow Jackets are squaring off on the basketball court for the first time. LONGEST DANCE: The Herons made their longest foray into the NCAA Tournament in 1997, when William Smith (27-1) reached the quarterfinals before suffering its only loss of the season. DOING THE DANCE: William Smith advanced to today s second round game with a 69-62 win over St. John Fisher College. Junior guard PAULA FOOTE led five Herons in double digits with a team-high 14 points. William Smith led by as many 27 in the second half and weathered a late run by the Cardinals. EXTENDED STAY: With their success against the Cardinals last night, the Herons have won eight consecutive games in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. William Smith has not lost in the first round of the Big Dance since 1994. STREAK BUSTERS: Last night, the Herons snapped St. John Fisher s 14-game winning streak, while extending their own winning streak to three games. COMMON GROUND: While the Herons and Yellow Jackets did not meet during the regular season, the two teams share one common opponent, Rochester. William Smith lost to the Yellowjackets 74-63 on Dec. 6, while Baldwin-Wallace defeated Rochester 53-39 on Nov. 19. GIVE ME LIBERTY: William Smith earned a berth in the field of 63 by winning the Liberty League and its accompanying automatic bid. It s the second consecutive season the Herons have won the League and 12th conference championship since 1991. UNSAINTED: William Smith captured the conference crown with a 52-38 win over St. Lawrence. The Herons gave the Saints, who finished the regular season with the League s top scoring defense (52.5 ppg), a dose of their own medicine. William Smith s swarming D limited St. Lawrence to a season-low 38 points. DEJA VU: The Herons, who also wore the Liberty League crown last season, defeated the same Saints in that title game. Sophomore forward STEPHANIE CZAJKOWSKI almost made it a triple double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. NEW HEIGHTS: Interim Head Coach

The record she broke? The 20-8 mark set by the Herons last season under OLYMPIA SCOTT. GUARDED CONDITION: William Smith placed three guards on the All-Liberty League teams. Junior PAULA FOOTE and sophomore MARISA VESPA received first team praise, while senior PRIA YOUNG garnered second team honors. Forward STEPHANIE CZAJKOWSKI joined the backcourt trio, earning a spot on the second team. BOOKWORMS: Student always comes before athlete, but few college teams put that into practice like William Smith. To earn a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic Team, players must maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be at least a sophomore academically. Seven of the 10 veteran Herons earned a spot on this year s team: EMILY ALCOTT, CINDY BORS, STEPHANIE CZAJKOWSKI, SERAPHINE HAMILTON, TANYA RICHVALSKY, MARISA VESPA, and PRIA YOUNG. PHINE-NOMINAL: Senior SERAPHINE HAMILTON was a two-time All-American on the soccer pitch. On the hardwood, she is William Smith s top offensive rebounder (72, 2.8/g). Hamilton set career-highs for points (14 vs. Hamilton) and rebounds (14 at Skidmore) in February. T MONEY: Senior TANYA RICHVALSKY has been tough to stop in the low post. She is second in the Liberty League in field goal percentage, knocking down 49.4 percent of her shots. The one player ranked ahead of her, sophomore STEPHANIE CZAJKOWSKI (50.0%). STOP THIEF: Senior guard PRIA YOUNG is currently third on the William Smith career steals list. She has 267 steals, only LIZ BROWN 00 (348) and JILL KATHMANN 96 (329) have recorded more as Herons. STOP THIEF, II: Speaking of PRIA YOUNG, she sports two of the highest single season steals totals in William Smith history. She had 88 last season, sixth on the all-time list, and currently eighth with 79. STOP THIEF, III: While PRIA YOUNG s 10 steals against Rensselaer in the Liberty League Tournament aren t a single game record, the total is a career-high for Young and the most by a Heron since LIZ BROWN 00 had 12 against Coe on Nov. 26, 1999. PATROLLING THE PAINT: Sophomore forward STEPHANIE CZAJKOWSKI leads William Smith in rebounding (6.9) and is second in scoring (10.6). She has posted four double-doubles this season. Czajkowski was especially effective in February, averaging 13.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in nine games. DOUBLE DUTY: Four of the 12 Herons on the basketball roster also play another sport. Seniors SERAPHINE HAMILTON and PRIA YOUNG and sophomore CINDY BORS play for the soccer team, while sophomore MARISA VESPA will trade in her hightops for a lacrosse stick after the season. TRIPLE THREAT: PRIA YOUNG has converted 164 career three-pointers, the third highest total by a Heron. SETTING THE TABLE: Sophomore guard MARISA VESPA is William Smith s top playmaker. Despite missing eight games due to injury, she leads the team in assists with 95 (5.0 apg). Her 237 career helpers have placed her 10th all-time already. CHARITY CASE: Speaking of MARISA VESPA, she has thrived at the charity stripe, sinking 165 career free throws. That total is seventh on the William Smith career list. CHARITY CASE, II: With a career free throw percentage of.754, PRIA YOUNG ranks sixth on the Herons all-time list. BLOCK PARTY: Sophomore forward AMANDA NANN already ranks in the top seven in career blocked shots with 47, one behind JENNIFER GOODELL 97, and three shy of senior TANYA RICHVALSKY. ON THE HORIZON: Senior PRIA YOUNG is currently 12th in career scoring with 974 points. At her current scoring average of 11.0 ppg, she would need the Herons to advance to the sectional championship game on March 11 to reach the 1,000-point plateau. SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS: Baldwin-Wallace owns a 25-4 overall record ON THE RADIO: WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva, 88.1 in Ithaca) will broadcast today s game. KEN DeBOLT will describe the playby-play, while JAKE RYDER will provide the color commentary. Outside of the listening area, fans can tune into WEOS online at www.weos.org.
