The month of August was a bit light on for things to report. Our teams in the CoCC Pairs, Men and Women, were unsuccessful in making the Final as the Women came second in their Semi-Final and the Men went down in the first round. The Club Triples, Men and Women have been rescheduled. Please check the notice board to find out when these will be played. The only big news for the Club has been the selection of 5 members to represent the ACT in the 2016 Seniors Sides Championship in Perth, 10 th 13 th October. Mina Bannerman, Robyn Moxon, Lois Waters, Gayle Young, and John McDonald will fly out on the 8 th with their fellow team members to play at Osborne Park Bowling Club in WA. Good luck and the best of bowling to everyone. Canberra Sports Day CANBERRA BOWLING CLUB INCORPORATED Hobart Avenue, Forrest, ACT 2603 Phone: 6295 2508 (business) 6174 3661 (bowls) Newsletter No. 63 September 2016 TUwww.canberra.bowls.com.auUTH club s Sports Day on Wednesday 31 st August. The rain started during the night and continued for much of the day. Fortunately most of the bowlers who were down to play turned up on the day ready to support our club. They were very disappointed that they couldn t get a tryout on the new artificial green but many have vowed to come back very soon to give it a go. Instead of going out to play in the rain the club organised that the teams would still have a game, but by using cards to decide the winning team on each end. This is a game which was used in a similar situation in Cootamundra when a Canberra team attended one of their charity days. Our event went well with a fantastic Ploughman s Lunch and large platters of fruit to help finish the day. Instead of the usual Black Spider everyone was given a ticket for their donation and the winners picked a gift from a basket. The collection raised $150 which will be donated to Pegasus. A big thank you to all the helpers on the day. The tables (Rinks) with the most prizes The weather hasn t been kind to the Wednesday Social bowling day during this winter. So it was no surprise, just disappointing, to the ladies who had put a big effort into the preparation for the All ready for the Sports Day

ACT EVENTS Club Events and deadlines highlighted in yellow Computer Tip this month This month is basically talking about good websites that guide you through all aspects of computing and the internet. One of the better sites for doing this online is called Webwise which is part of the BBC. It explains all the fundamentals from security, computing terms to precautions to take when buying online. http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/0/ Another one of these sites is called Learn Free, which is an online platform for courses that covers technology, online literacy, and math skills. The site lists hundreds of lessons which are designed for basic and intermediate levels. Being well designed it's suitable for seniors just entering the tech world who want to grab basic internet and computer skills. Best of all its free for anyone to use. Finally having ventured north to the Sunshine coast in the past few weeks it was sad to see another couple of bowls clubs close in areas one would have considered prime to survive just from tourist numbers alone. But apparently dwindling members and rising costs of green keeping forced the closures. So it's important to support your local club, even if it means that minor inconvenience when the club is hosting a private function. Every little bit helps. Greg Bourke http://www.gcflearnfree.org/
Answer Next Issue TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE Q1. The Leads had put their bowls down on the first round of club fours when a sudden rain storm stopped play which was subsequently abandoned for the day. Are the players in both teams constituted or only the Leads? Q2. May a bowl on the boundary line be queried after more bowls have been delivered? Q3. When the Skips compared scorecards on end 8 the scores didn t agree. A mistake was found on end 5 however, the Skips cannot agree what the score was. What should be done? Last Issue s Solution A1. All players are constituted immediately their first game in the competition has commenced (when the Jack has been delivered in the first end.) A2. Yes. A decision as to whether a bowl is dead can be made as soon as the Skips realise it is necessary, even if a number of bowls have been played. A3. If during a game, or at the conclusion before the cards are signed, a mistake is discovered and the opponents cannot agree, then the Umpire shall be called and if no resolution is found, the end where the mistake occurred shall be declared a nil score end (tied end) and the cards adjusted accordingly.
Women s Mid-Week Pennants It was very disappointing this year when for one reason or another the ladies couldn t get enough members to put their names forward to play during the Mid-Week Pennants season this year. Last year there were 3 teams, but sadly this year we will only be able to commit to 2 teams, 1 in Grade 1 and the other in Grade 4. The draw for the Pennants hasn t been done yet but will be sent out as soon as it is available and placed on the club notice board as usual. Here is the list for the teams: Grade 1 Gillian Stenner Jimmie Ogle Julie Hancock Robyn Moxon Manager: Robyn Moxon Grade 4 Gayle Young Gloria/ Pam Bishop Lois Waters Mina Bannerman Belinda Fardell Pat Moffat Jocelyn Jenvey Adrienne Capp Manager: Jocelyn Jenvey Carole Thompson Nancy Polascek Heather Leonard Barbara Olinder Reserves: Margaret Bates Nancy Buck Mary Nelson (N/A 18 th -25 th Oct) Ailsa Forster (N/A 18 th Oct-3 rd Nov) Lorraine Barton (N/A 13 th Sept) Members are reminded that if they wish to enter their names on the list for any bowling session that they may do so via the phone: 6174 3661 or via email: cbcbowls@gmail.com Please note that every endeavour is made to ensure that any information contained within this Newsletter is as factual and accurate as may be possible at the time of publication.
