Edgewood Primary School Building skills and values for life Dear Parents/Carers, Spring Term PE News and Success Friday, 15 April 2016 It has been another action-packed term of sport and activities at Edgewood and here is the summary: Fencing Club The Year 5/6 children were really enthusiastic about fencing after experiencing it on residential in November so this club became very popular, very quickly. One group have learnt the basics of the sport and a second group of budding fencers have just started enhancing their skills! Fencing is a new club at Edgewood and it was great to try out a new sport! We all enjoyed building skills and fighting against each other. We learned many parts like being the referee and being able to score points. In the last two weeks, we had a fun tournament where we used all these skills to fight against each other! We loved every session! Evie Allsop and Millie Martin Basketball Club and Competition Another popular activity! KS2 were offered the chance to enhance their basketball skills this term. The club also offered a great opportunity for pupils to participate in a competition alongside other schools. The Y5/6 team came a fantastic 2 nd place in the tournament at Selston Leisure Centre and showed great ability and teamwork during the tournament.
KS2 Indoor Rowing Two Y5/6 teams and one Y3/4 team went to Holgate Academy for the annual Indoor Rowing meet. Our Y3/4 children ended the evening 3 rd and our Y5/6 teams finished 2 nd and 5 th. The practice paid off as we took a Y5/6 team to the district finals where the children rowed boldly against competitive opposition. We were very proud of their 2 nd place finish! Year 5/6 Futsal Where to start with the 5/6 Futsal? The team worked superbly together to transform a 2 nd place finish in the local competition into a 1 st and gold medal in the district competition. All the players had a great impact on both tournaments. We had great goalkeeping from Noah, tough tackling from Charlie and Alfie, vision and tricks from Aiden, Kobi, Jacob and Riley and important goals from Charlie Stenson and Archie Shooter, which proved vital in the nail-biting games!
Gym and Dance Festival Mr MacLeod and Mrs Moore trained and took a group of Year 6 pupils to National Academy to take part in a festival celebrating gymnastics and dancing. The pupils performed the Oxo Reel and The Dashing White Sergeant in front of other schools to great applause. Well done to the brave pupils, who trained really hard! KS1 Multi-Skills Children preparing for the festival KS1 children took part in an indoor athletics competition. This involved a javelin throw, long jump, speed bounce and chest push to name a few. The children enjoyed themselves and competed really well, ending the night in 3 rd and 6 th place. They were a credit to Mrs Treece and Mrs Platts who have been running training after school on Wednesdays. Girls Futsal A tough competition and the girls performed admirably to end the evening in 5 th place!
Table Tennis Year 5/6 pupils were offered the chance to take part in a table tennis tournament at break and lunch times during this term and a high number decided to do just that. With the tables in Azul conveniently transformed into table tennis tables, we got underway. After a very competitive knockout tournament, we were able to pick a top four to take to the district tournament. After weeks of build-up and practising inside and outside of school whenever they had a minute away from their booster books, the four children managed to claim gold medals! Fantastic work! Table tennis was yet another new sport this term. All four of us loved it and we really enjoyed learning some new techniques courtesy of Mr. Williamson. Because of this we claimed gold! We were happy! Luke Sanders KS2 Boccia Although there are no photos yet, we have also have a team through to the Boccia finals. Best of luck after the holidays! Year 3/4 Futsal More tough competition in the Hucknall area. The team played well to achieve a 6 th place finish.
Mick Yard Trophy A group of Y5/6 children were able to take part in the Mick Yard Trophy an indoor cricket tournament that is based at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground. The team performed above expectation and ended the evening in 2 nd place, narrowly missing out in the final! It was a great warm-up to the cricket that will be played in the summer term. As a bonus, the team were also invited to tour the ground. They walked through the famous pavilion, which houses photos of former captains and international players along the walls, took a glimpse into the home and away changing rooms and took in one of the best views of Nottingham at the top of the Radcliffe Road stand. They were also lucky enough to walk past current England international, James Taylor!
Premier Education As part of an initiative run by Premier Education, a selection of Year 5 pupils experienced Goalball a team sport designed specifically for blind athletes. Over 4 weeks, the children learned how to hear the ball, shoot and save with head, arms and legs. They thoroughly enjoyed this experience and look forward to giving other sports a try in the future. Edgewood Sports Week This year, Edgewood will hold a week dedicated to sporting activity.
