Saint Lucie Sailing Club The Log Volume 45, Issue 8, September 2018 Incorporated April 4, 1975 From the Commodore The Dog Days Of August certainly lived up to their name this year. Lots of heat and light air. Racers in the Dog Days Regatta found drifting conditions at the start before the breeze filled in allowing a good race. Participation in the Nat Reed Memorial Sunset Race was held down a little by the threat of bad weather (PM thunderstorms). Those who braved the conditions had a good sail and were treated to the sight of a full moon rising over the St. Lucie river. Finally we had a well attended pool party thanks to the hospitality of Denise and Jesse Jagoda to cool everyone off. We re not having a membership meeting in September due to Labor Day, but that doesn t mean we re taking the whole month off. For starters we re doing an ocean race with the Fort Pierce Yacht Cub on September 2 nd, followed by a post race pot luck at their clubhouse at 5 PM. Later in the month Capt. Tom Mestrits is leading an excursion to Peck s Lake to participate in the Keep Martin Beautiful annual beach cleanup on September 15 th. Our monthly Sailing & Margarita socials will continue with a get together at Duffy s in St. Lucie West on September 20 th. Details on these two events to follow. On another note, we re still seeking a Fleet Captain and Rear Commodore for next year. If you re interested in helping the club by serving in either of these roles, contact Nominating Committee Chair, Tom Mestrits, or myself. We d love to hear from you. Meanwhile, let s have fun on the water! - Joe Sawyer, SLSC Commodore 1

Indian River Drive Please arrive by 5 pm Admission is free, but please bring a side dish to share! RSVP by Friday, August 31, 2018, I need to let them know how many will be attending. PLEASE RSVP to Linda Magda lindamagda468@gmail.com Tel. 201-640-4792 Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 15th - Capt. Tom Mestrits SLSC is joining the Coastal Cleanup of Martin County and we are assigned to do Peck Lake. I will have Skeeter available to take people to Peck Lake and can accommodate up to 8 people. As you know you can only get to Peck Lake Beach by boat. We go down the ICW and beach the boat, so it is easy to get to shore. A short trail through the mangroves gets us to the beach. Be prepared to be able to walk in the hot sand. Bring your own drinks and snacks. The plan is that I will leave the Deck Marina at 10:00 AM. Anyone wants a ride send me a confirmation with your phone number capttommes@aol.com. We have other boats volunteering, Patricia & Jim Strutz-Beam are taking their power boat, Fred Faulkner with his sail boat and Mike Brescher is taking his Boston Whaler. If you are taking your sail boat and anchor, Mike can take the crew to shore. Much thanks to all volunteers! 3
12-Pack Update Nat Reed Memorial Sunset Race Raced August 25, 2018 - Mike Diamond Mike D Weather for most of the day was dismal, but the forecast indicated no rain at 5:00 pm and winds were at 7-9 mph. The WeatherBug app actually had it correct - the rain cleared, the wind picked up, temps were good and we had an excellent sail. Salty Dogs was first to the #6 mark, Sloop John B was first to the #6A mark and held the lead until passed by Wild Rice at #6 headed for OBC. Order of finish: Wild Rice, Sloop John B, Salty Dogs Wild Rice and Sloop John B rafted up north of the Deck to watch sunset and the full moon rise, but dragged anchor in the St. Lucie muck. We motored (still rafted up) over to the shore south of the marina next to the Deck for Happy Hour. Unfortunately, sunset was blocked by cloud cover, but the rising full moon was outstanding. The next 12 Pack is scheduled for September 22nd (first day of Autumn). Remember - the key to 12 Pack success is participation... 4

Nominating Committee - Thomas Mestrits As past commodore, I am the head of the Nominating Committee and after our Bridge Meeting I am pleased to report that most of the present Officers and Directors are willing to continue their duties for next year. I want to thank all the officers of their service and dedication of the past year. Of all the different organizations I have been involved SLSC has to be the best. Everybody cooperating, friendly, willing to pitch in and help the club to pursue our passion of sailing. The present slate for 2019 is as follows; Commodore Joe Sawyer Vice Commodore James Arthur Secretary Treasurer Race Captain Social Captain Log Editor Website Ship s Store Publicity Historian Dina Hollobaugh Debbie Arthur Mike Brescher Linda Magda Helen Harralson Adrienne Jalowsky Katherine Neurohr Harvey Nation Jesse Jagoda Refreshment Coordinator Joanne Swann Tina H Two positions need to be filled. The Rear Commodore, which entails scheduling a program for our meetings, setting up the projector and introducing the guest speaker. The other position is Cruise Captain. This is a simple position, because we have some annually scheduled cruises that we have every year and we have people who organize those events. We have 8 events like this. So there are only 4 cruises that needs to be organized by the Cruise Captain. Thank you in advance for stepping up for the club! 6
